  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

That's a quotation by a man.
2Peter 1:21 "For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit."

The Bible makes this very clear that "man" spoke the Words of God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit of God. Usually we use the word inspired. I wrote a post about a flock of birds often sparrows and how they are carried along by the wind or the laws of aerodynamics. Job talks about the Spirit of God and the Breath of God. "The spirit of God hath made me, And the breath of the Almighty given me life.".

Seldom do I hear an atheist talk about having any sort of an experience with God. I remember when I went to Hong Kong. I relied that you can only experience Hong Kong by getting on an airplane and going there. If you have no experience with God then you are not going to know what we are talking about. Just because you have never been to Hong Kong does not mean I have never been to Hong Kong. Just because you do not know God or have never experienced God does not mean I do not know God. I am a father of at least two sons. If a man has never had a child does not mean I am not a father, just because they have never had that experience.

This demonstrates the God you believe in how exactly?
This shows that leading men of science believe that the Laws of Science originated with God. United States is actually a nation founded on deism: "belief in the existence of a supreme being, specifically of a creator who does not intervene in the universe." (wiki) You do not have to be a deist to participate in this great nation but you are still enjoying all the benefits that deism affords you by staying here and not leaving. There are many gifts and benefits of God that you enjoy ever day of your life. You should be more grateful to God for all He has done for you and for the gifts He has given you. My mom always taught me to be grateful. When someone does something for you or gives something to you then you thank them. My dad added that even if you hate the gift pretend to be grateful and then throw it away if you want when they are not looking. My pastor teaches that even if someone you work with gives you alcohol you still thank them and do not give them a sermon about how evil drinking is because from their perspective they are giving you a gift wanting to establish good will.

There are people that are caregivers and there maybe things about choices they make in their life that I find to be repulsive but that does not take away from the gifts they have and what they are willing and able to contribute to the well being of others. In a situation like Orlando we can still feel compassion for people we find to be repulsive because of the compassion that they have for others. It is the cold hearted people that has no compassion for others that society often feels that we should not have any compassion for them in return.

So If you want to reject our God and you want to mock and belittle us, then why should we have any compassion for you?

The Bible was written by men. 2 Peter was written by a man. When you say these are the "words of God", all you are doing is repeating the claims that other men have made. They said that their words were from God and you believed them. They have no more evidence that their claim is true than you do.

The Bible was written by men.
This is what they call a half truth. You only know half of the truth. The Bible was written by men that were inspired by God. IF you have never been inspired by God, if you have never known God that in and of itself does not mean other men do not know God or have been inspired by God. We simply want you to know what is available to you. It is your choice. God gives you that choice. Now it is up to you to decide if you want to receive and accept what God makes available for you. "the free gift of God is eternal life" (Rom6:23) The gift God has for you is life, He can fill you with His love and peace and so very much more. It is your choice if you want to receive what He has for you or if you want to reject Him.

Again, those men CLAIMED to be inspired in their writing. They offer no evidence to support that claim.

Someone once said "It is impossible to reason someone out of a position they did not arrive at logically." After two decades of trying to reason with creationists and other sorts of fundamentalists I have drawn a conclusion. As long as they are completely convinced that the Bible is "The Word of God" and is both literal and inerrant, they are invincible. Present your arguments and evidence, point out biblical errors and contradictions, it all is worthless in the face of this faith in a book. Although they are intelligent people and are well able to invent plausible "what if?" arguments, they do have one major weakness --- they have no evidence. We see this, of course, but they don't because the Bible is the only evidence they need. "The Bible says it, argument over, we win!" is unassailable in their eyes.

JackRT, I notice that you listed United Church of Canada as your church/faith. I'm just wondering why you seem to be saying the Bible isn't true or the Word of God.

Do you want me to list leading scientists that do not believe a god exists?

Opinions are irrelevent, only evidence matters.

The United Church of Canada is quite liberal and inclusive. I approach the bible much like a prospector approaches his claim. I search for those golden nuggets of wisdom and insight but I am prepared to have to shift a whole lot of earth in order to find them. The bible is not truth but it does contain truth. The bible is not the "Word of God", that is a Person.

Just because you have never been to Hong Kong does not mean I have never been to Hong Kong.

Just because you have never been to Cloud-cuckoo-land, Utopia or the flying island of Laputa does not mean that I have never been to these places.

Actually for the most part they didn't. It was a claim made on their behalf by the (unknown) author of II Timothy.

It is a good thing that we live in the era we do. Otherwise, one or the other of us (or maybe both) would be burned at the stake as heretics.

I don't think it should ever come to that. Although it still does in other places in the world.

I am not stating the validity of anything...I do say, as a believer, the Bible says you, an Agnostic, can't under understand it. Saying that, there are plenty of things in the Bible which aren't disputed because of physical evidence....too many to discuss here but one is that even Muslim faith has records that Jesus really existed.
For you, yes it is the spiritual discernment that you lack, so I understand where you are coming from!

Sorry, you won't understand or agree but I will do my best. It not as much as being a believer, as what being a believer means. A lot of people say that they are believers without even knowing what it means. There is a terminology that some of us understand and that is the difference between being a " Head Christian" and a " Heart Christian". What is known about a true Christian is that they know God has put his Holy Spirit in them....that is a Heart Christian. Those who know the Bible very well, say that they are believers but, do not have the spirit of God in them....they have had the chances so for but ,otherwise, have chosen not to personally commit to Jesus...they are the Head Christians....you will never understand, until you chose to receive Jesus in your heart....I didn't used to and was much like you!

You stating three times I cannot, or will not, understand, yet you seams to claim there is some knowledge in the form of evidence that make rational sense but it wont make sense to an unbeliever, this becasue the Bible says this is the case. Is that correctly understood?

You need to produce real evidence that can falsify the Bible.

This is of course a complete and utter absurd request from you. When I am, or anyone else is, asking why you think science has prove the bible true, then it is you that is obligated to "produce evidence" not me.

There is no evidence on Skeptic Dot Com. I have already shown that skeptics and scoffers have a reprobate mind and they fail at their attempt to suppress the Truth. We need to avoid this sort of minion - lemmings mentality and people need to learn how to use their brain and think for themselves.

Is it your opinion that a failure of science to prove the Bible wrong means science has proven the Bible to be true?

I only "ignore" posts when I do not have time and I can not keep up with all of them.

How convenient that you "do not have time and can not keep up with" those post which happens to disprove your claims.

It can be difficult to deal with all the confusion that people with reprobate minds seem to be able to produce. They seem to delight in making the water muddy.

I sense very little love in your posts but much anger or frustration towards those that disagree with you. It make me wonder who, or what, have hurt you so badly that you feel a need to ventilate these feelings all the time?

I wanted to pop this into the discussion since others are posting their meme of preference. :p

This is, of course, a quote mine which is absurd in the highest possible degree for anyone who actually have read Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species because those who actually cares about being truthful will know how Darwin then goes on and actually explain how the eye could have been been formed by natural selection and then conclude it is not as absurd as it first might have been thought.

Here is another quote mine from Origin of Species: "Natural selection cannot possible produce any modifications in any one species" which continues "exclusively for the good of another species".
