Proverbs 22
Everyone read Chapter 22 if it is the 22th day of the month today. Come back and give us your thoughts....Tishri1 :wave:

Proverbs 22New International Version (NIV)

22 A good name is more desirable than great riches;
to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.

2 Rich and poor have this in common:
The Lord is the Maker of them all.

3 The prudent see danger and take refuge,
but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.

4 Humility is the fear of the Lord;
its wages are riches and honor and life.

5 In the paths of the wicked are snares and pitfalls,
but those who would preserve their life stay far from them.

6 Start children off on the way they should go,
and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

7 The rich rule over the poor,
and the borrower is slave to the lender.

8 Whoever sows injustice reaps calamity,
and the rod they wield in fury will be broken.

9 The generous will themselves be blessed,
for they share their food with the poor.

10 Drive out the mocker, and out goes strife;
quarrels and insults are ended.

11 One who loves a pure heart and who speaks with grace
will have the king for a friend.

12 The eyes of the Lord keep watch over knowledge,
but he frustrates the words of the unfaithful.

13 The sluggard says, “There’s a lion outside!
I’ll be killed in the public square!”

14 The mouth of an adulterous woman is a deep pit;
a man who is under the Lord’s wrath falls into it.

15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child,
but the rod of discipline will drive it far away.

16 One who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth
and one who gives gifts to the rich—both come to poverty.

Thirty Sayings of the Wise
Saying 1
17 Pay attention and turn your ear to the sayings of the wise;
apply your heart to what I teach,
18 for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart
and have all of them ready on your lips.
19 So that your trust may be in the Lord,
I teach you today, even you.
20 Have I not written thirty sayings for you,
sayings of counsel and knowledge,
21 teaching you to be honest and to speak the truth,
so that you bring back truthful reports
to those you serve?

Saying 2
22 Do not exploit the poor because they are poor
and do not crush the needy in court,
23 for the Lord will take up their case
and will exact life for life.

Saying 3
24 Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person,
do not associate with one easily angered,
25 or you may learn their ways
and get yourself ensnared.

Saying 4
26 Do not be one who shakes hands in pledge
or puts up security for debts;
27 if you lack the means to pay,
your very bed will be snatched from under you.

Saying 5
28 Do not move an ancient boundary stone
set up by your ancestors.

Saying 6
29 Do you see someone skilled in their work?
They will serve before kings;
they will not serve before officials of low rank.

Have I not written thirty sayings for you,
sayings of counsel and knowledge

According to the editors of the The Jewish Study Bible (based on the JPS Tanakh), the meaning of the Hebrew of this verse is uncertain. They translate it Indeed, I wrote down for you a threefold lore, Wise counsel.

The 2nd century BC translation of the Hebrew into Greek (from the Septuagint) is a little different:

And do thou too repeatedly record them for thyself on the table of thine heart, for counsel and knowledge.

Pro 22:19 I have made known to thee this day, even to thee. Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge, that I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee?

In reading chapter 22, these verses stood out for me:

verse 1 "A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold." i found the "loving favour" in this verse to be precious...it says "loving" favour, not just "favour...how precious is THAT?

verse 4"By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life.." This is echoed all throughout the Bible...it seems that God is emphasizing a Godly "humbleness" and a "fear of the Lord", as having great value in His eyes...reminds me of what God testified about Job in the beginning of the book of Job.

verses 22-23"Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate: For the LORD will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.." These verses remind me of how abominable it is to God to spurn, knock down, take advantage of, oppress, and afflict the poor and those already suffering. We are to ease and or remove the cause of the affliction, defend, speak out for, provide for, and proactively, and with compassion respond to the afflicted and the suffering, just as the man responded in the Good Samaritan. As it says in Isaiah, THEN will one's light shine, rising from obscurity:

"Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward. Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday:!"Isaiah 58:6-10

Proverbs 22:5
KJV said:
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

That takes me back to my childhood where my mom had me saved. Though I am not old... yet, I still see what this verse means.

1. If you must choose, take a good name rather than great riches; for to be held in loving esteem is better than silver and gold. So true...

4 True humility and respect for the Lord lead a man to riches, honor, and long life. This is a general observation that would have been especially applicable to an obedient Israelite living in Solomon's God-fearing kingdom. Nevertheless, some have been martyrs at a young age, and some have given away all their wealth for the sake of God's kingdom. The book of Proverbs describes life the way it should be. It does not dwell on exceptions.
Text is the exact commentary for this verse in the 'Life Application Bible.'

Hi,

Is not long life here talking about life after death, life with God?

Is not life here possibly mean, the years of this life, and the years of the next life.

So yes, riches of knowledge and understanding of God, which YOU have, honor from God then, honor from God now, and honor in this life also from God and some men, You have mine, so what above is not true even with martyrs and those who give away their wealth for God?

Or, did I not understand you?

LOVE,

I have edited my comments and put the full text from the 'Life Application Bible' which will hopefully be clearer,

In reading Proverbs 22 verse 11 stood out for me:

"He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend."

especially the highlighted part.

Here we have someone that LOVES purity of heart and because he does, what he speaks is gracious and blessed with wisdom, so much so, that even the king will be drawn to him and consider him to be a friend because he TRUSTS him. This is also an example of "integrity".

In reading Proverbs 22, this verse stood out for me....

it's a precious verse and promise.....and it reminds me of how we CANNOT ever out-give God, and how when we give to the poor it especially bleses His heart, and it is even written that when we give to the poor, we are "lending" to the Lord. It's like, not only is the dear one being blessed that we are giving to, but WE are being blessed as well, and not only that, but when He gives back to us, is triple-fold.....in other words, He blesses our socks off hahahaaaa.

LOVE it.

Jeremiah 17, similarly, says: "I the LORD search the heart..."

Isaiah 55, similarly, says: "I the LORD search the heart..."

That's precious, that He delves into our hearts......

reminds me of how David asked Him to "search his heart"....

In reading Proverbs 22, this verse stood out for me.

It is a reminder that those seeds that were planted in that little heart, mind, and soul, WILL grow and bring forth fruit, in God's own timing.

Reminds me of this verse:

"So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it." ~Isaiah 55:11

Precious.
