  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Space problem on my phone...

I have an 8 gigabyte iPhone 4S, and I've been trying to download iOS 8 among other things like app bundles. The problem is, even if I were to delete everything that is available to delete, I still don't have enough space to download iOS 8 which is 4.6 gigs large. But... I have an 8 gig? I know I can only put 6 gigs of data in it, but that's more than enough. What's going on?

You'll need to delete everything you can to make room for the download. You can re download everything you deleted after the install. The 4.6 GB download file gets deleted after it installs.

I can't. If I delete everything from my phone, I don't have enough to download iOS 8 in the first place. But I should since it has 6 gigs available.

I've read that the processor in the 4S is insufficient to run 8; the phone becomes slower, the battery drains faster, and would not leave a lot of free space for the 8GB model.

My recommendation is not to update unless there is a feature that you really need.

Okay then, but I still want to get my free space back! Help!

Do you have a computer running Mac or Windows?

If Windows, you can plug the phone into a USB port and it will show up as a removable drive. Then you can just cut images/movies to the computer.

For Macs, iTunes should be able to back up the data so you can delete it.

If you have apps you don't need, you can tap and hold any icon until it starts wiggling and then tap the X to remove it. Press the main button to get out of wiggle mode.

You don't seem to understand.

If I delete EVERYTHING... I still don't have enough space to download ios8. It says that 1.7 gigs are still being used.

Try going to settings->general->usage and wait for it to fill out the "storage" section. That should tell you what's eating that space.

If you're sure you've backed up everything you need, you can go to
general->settings and scroll down to reset. There's an option for erase all content and settings. I believe this will factory default the phone so it would be like you turned it on for the first time. Be absolutely sure you've backed up everything you need and that you know your Apple ID Credentials.
