I've been immersed in a lot of social justice debates lately and I've began wondering what our obsession with genitals is by both religious and nonreligious people. Why do we treat touching of genitals so much more differently than touching of ears or touching of hands, for instance?

Some apes touch genitals when they meet, when they apologize, etc. Why do we, as humans, see genitals as the ultimate forbidden zone? Why do we see sexual arousal as a thing that's, at best, private or, at worst, perverted and shameful? Are these evolutionary leftovers from wanting to ensure our genetic legacy? Are these mostly cultural developments?

Is this fear, shame, and repulsion something we should continue to embrace or something we should move past?

Imo it´s mostly cultural developments. And, yes, I would say we´d better off moving past them.
Caveat: moving past cultural developments isn´t as easy as it may sound.
So the actual question, to me, is: What´s the best way to (slowly and carefully just so not ask too much from us) move past them?

Apes also throw their own poo and eat it. Doesn't mean we should do it too. Not counting the fact some people at wards do that.

BTW this topic certainly got derailed by the end lol. Although I will say there christians that believe genitals are just for procreation and nothing else. Just as they believe the breast is for breastfeeding and nothing else. Although they tend to ignore something called the Song of Solmon. It doesn't get much more x-rated then that in terms of sex being for more then just making babies.

Something that can 'assist" does not make it the primary function . Uterine contractions for example are going to happen either way . Not to mention trying to bring them on by nipple stimulation is not going to assist let alone "start them" on its own as a full proof function.
