Eye for eye, tooth for tooth. Justice is justice.

Bring back the electric chair to be more of a deterrent to murder. It probably hurts less than being crucified. Make all other violent crime offenders work 80 hour weeks doing hard physical labor, so reform actually works. It won't solve all problems, but it will make would be criminals think a bit harder before they commit a crime.

Research shows otherwise.

Does the death penalty deter crime? - Death Penalty - ProCon.org

This website sites numerous studies that conflict whether or not it's a deterrent. Personally I don't want to kill people over something that is so inconclusive.

Second of all, I don't want to kill someone who doesn't deserve to be there. One posthumous exoneration is one too many. After all, how many innocent people do you have to kill before you're a murderer?

Should the death penalty be changed?

Obviously the death penalty isn't Biblical, if you care about Jesus that is.

Eye for eye, tooth for tooth. Justice is justice.

Nice to see a Christian not quoting Jesus on this subject.

Rape for rape. Torture for torture. Justice is justice.

Would you be ok with prison guards raping rapists, or torturing torturers? Because all I see is savage bloodthirsty revenge. It is a mockery of our 'civil' society that the criminal drags us down into the mud with them.

Then there is also the danger of killing innocent people, and the government having the freedom to unnecessarily kill people when they could be locked up.

Why not crucifixion? I'm sure Jesus would like to see you unnecessarily forcing his torturous death on your fellow humans. Or how about stoning?

The OP was clearly an attempt to stir the pot over a non issue.

The death penalty can act as a deterrent if the populace is fully cognizant of it's reality. As things stand, we are so insulated from those deaths that they hardly make a ripple. I am still in favor of the death penalty in some cases. There are some criminals whose crimes are so horrible that death is the only appropriate response. What does it tell society when we refuse to punish the most horrible murderers? What happens to those who guard them? Every day, they watch while child rapist murderers live a life of ease, protected from their just rewards. Wouldn't you be tempted to commit acts of cruelty? What are the long term effects of that dissonance between the normal reaction to evil and your job of maintaining a monster's life?

Is it really healthy for a society to abolish the death penalty?

Deterrence is a red herring. It really makes no difference if the death penalty deters others or not. Capital punishment is about punishment, not deterrence. That should be obvious based simply upon the name. People are executed because the crime they committed was so vile and inhuman that death becomes the appropriate penalty--hence, death penalty.

As to the OP, I don't support lethal injection. It is my opinion that if you wish to prey upon other humans and behave like a mindless killer, you should be left to fend for yourself among other mindless killers. So I support the shark tank penalty. They need t eat too.

Should the death penalty be changed?

If folks on the anti-capital punishment side are up in arms about something as tame as lethal injection, good luck rallying any support for a biblical form of execution ^_^

While it personally wouldn't bother me in the least for parents of a molestation victim to hit their child's abuser with rocks, I don't see it happening this day in age.

In regards to your question, yes, there are some changes that need to be made. Currently, we spend 2.5 million dollars for capital punishment, and about 2 million dollars to keep them alive for life in prison. Neither is fair to the law abiding citizens. Our tax money shouldn't have to be used for someone else's evil acts. I think for airtight convictions for certain types of crimes (either the act is caught on video or we have absolute DNA evidence), it shouldn't cost 2 million dollars, it should only cost about $3 for the injection (plus court fees). In airtight cases, there's no need for 20 years worth of appeals. For example, Tookie Williams, the founder of one of the most violent gangs in the world (responsible for multiple murders) shouldn't have sat on death row for all those years chewing up tax dollars...the execution should've happened much sooner than that.

While the death penalty has never been proven to be a deterrent to crime (because it's not...I know some of my fellow pro death penalty posters like to use that argument, but nothing has ever supported that theory), I'm not in favor of it for that reason. I favor it simply because the idea that honest taxpayers have to work hard for their 3 meals a day and roof over their while a murderer or rapist gets it for free (at the expense of those honest taxpayers) leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

Our for profit prison system in the US is a big problem...two ways to combat that problem? Quit locking up non-violent potheads and quit paying to keep serial killers alive.

No blanket policies have ever had a positive impact on addressing violent crime (gun bans, curfews, stop & frisk, etc...), what has worked though, are programs that specifically target gang activity. Boston and other cities have implemented programs that target gang activity specifically in the past, and have watched their violent crime rate drop by 40% and their youth homicide rate drop by 70%...note: none of these programs inconvenienced or banned anything from law abiding citizens...but try telling that to someone who'd dead-set on retrying failed policies rather than retrying ones that actually have worked, and they'll tell you that you don't care about elementary school children.

The Bible does specify some punishments. Like how a community could all get together and pick up heavy objects to beat someone to death with them.

They found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day. ... And the LORD said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones.... And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the LORD commanded Moses. Numbers 15:32-56

Thankfully, we aren't required to follow the Bible in todays civil society.

The same number of children I am OK with having murdered by some perverted baby raper. I'm no more in favor of mistakes on death row that cost innocent lives than mistakes on the highway that cost innocent lives or any other thing that causes the innocent to die. It's always sad, and to be avoided by any REASONABLE means, but death, even wrongful death, is an unavoidable part of reality. Let's not lose sight of the big picture by focusing solely on the extremely rare and remote possibilities.

Why risk killing innocent people when there is no conclusive gain from it?
