Paul also apparently states that people are the way they are because God decided to make them so. He then rethorically asks "then how can God judge me" and answers "who are you to question God" - which in my honest opinion is a totally cop-out answer.
I just wanted to hop in to say that Paul's answer might not be quite the cop out that you think. It's a little long, because this is important enough to avoid quote-mining.
From Isaiah (to Cyrus)
Now in the bold, salvation and righteousness are hand in hand."I am the Lord, and there is no other;apart from me there is no God.
I will strengthen you,
though you have not acknowledged me,
so that from the rising of the sun
to the place of its setting
men may know there is none besides me.
I am the Lord, and there is no other.
I form the light and create darkness,
I bring prosperity and create disaster;
I, the Lord, do all these things.
You heavens above, rain down righteousness;
let the clouds shower it down.
Let the earth open wide,
let salvation spring up,
let righteousness grow with it;
I, the Lord, have created it.
Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker,
to him who is but a potsherd among the potsherds on the ground.
Does the clay say to the potter,
What are you making?
Does your work say,
He has no hands?
Woe to him who says to his father,
What have you begotten?
or to his mother,
What have you brought to birth?(Isaiah 45:5-10)
And here:
In the bold, God's ways are mercy on the wicked, which is totally unlike man's ways.Seek the Lord while he may be found;
call on him while he is near.
Let the wicked forsake his way
and the evil man his thoughts.
Let him turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him,
and to our God, for he will freely pardon.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,
declares the Lord.
As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
As the rain and the snow
come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,
so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:6-11)
And here:
In the bold, blessed are those who learn.Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;love and faithfulness go before you.
Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you,
who walk in the light of your presence, O Lord.
They rejoice in your name all day long;
they exult in your righteousness.
For you are their glory and strength,
and by your favor you exalt our horn.
Indeed, our shield belongs to the Lord,
our king to the Holy One of Israel.(Psalm 89:14-18)
And here:
Jesus was made perfect through suffering.But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering. Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers.(Heb 2:9-11)
Now back to Paul:
I'm running out of room here, but once you abandon the idea that God has created a playground of wickedness so that He will have plenty of folks to barbeque (which you have), you are free to explore what God is doing. Paul's statement about who-could-question-God is only a cop out if it is explaining away injustice.Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now receive mercy as a result of Gods mercy to you. For God has bound all men over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all. (Romans 11:30-32)
But if you are talking about a God whose motivation is redemption, then it's a different story altogether.
God bless
