CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Not to mention there's a meme in Christianity which identifies a lack of complete agreement with being of the devil. I'm never sure what exactly is at play when we get vague reports of misbehavior from Christians. In general it's not ever as bad as their persecution complex is making it out to be. Sometimes it's atheists acting badly, but more often it's atheists asking questions that true believers don't have an answer to. The latter is what brings out the most emotional responses in Christians, at least in my opinion.

It's sort of a deep seated reaction that happens when hypocrisy is exposed. I agree, it's not nice. But we see Christians doing the same and that makes me wonder as well. The secret is for both sides to start acting with more Love and Compassion.
Edited to add: I believe that if Christians started acting with their hearts filled with Love and Compassion and had that need to Serve as Jesus Christ did, that the reactions from non-believers would be much nicer. The fruit tells all.

For myself, when speaking about Jesus Christ, in order to speak Truth, a person MUST know the Heart of Christ. Most talk only about "religion" as truth and know not the Heart of Christ.

There is such a spirit of hate and division in this country. the press promotes this division and the people fall for their divisiveness. We are letting them pull us around by our ears. Its beyond sane. But the fact remains. Whether a person is an atheist or a Christian or a democrat or republican all these labels are a choice a person makes. So why get angry with people of opposite beliefs? Now when it comes to race, that is a sacred thing and all races should be treated with dignity. I don't think you can blame those peoples behaviour on whether Christians are loving and compassionate. That's like saying that if we only treat Iran nicer then they will be more loving towards us. Civility and respect start within a person and when the person is displaying contrary then there is something wrong within them.

The anger comes when people with opposite beliefs attempt to do certain things that affect people who don't share their beliefs, such as restricting the rights and freedoms of others, because they don't believe they should have them. That's when we stop thinking their just loony, and we start getting angry.

Well, I'm not sure how safe a bet it is to assume I only care about my own rights and freedoms. You sure took that line quick.
I will get just as angry about the restrictions of others' rights. Gadarene has already spoken of them.
This of course doesn't excuse bad behavior of the non-religious. Or of anyone. But I would say, that when the religious attempt to stop the progress that we have all made, in education, in technology, in human rights, in morality- people have to stand up to it.
The non-religious should still keep it tasteful though. If they're going to insult, do it like Hitchens would have done it.

This country was founded under God, and ever since the founding marriage has been between a man and a woman and a good number of people would like to keep it that way. Why is it that so many gay friends of mine agree with that? Because there are a good many gays out there that respect the fact that marriage should be between a man and a woman and respect that fact. Civil unions, and certain basic rights I agree with. But let us have something. Being gay is different than the civil rights movement. Because being black, blue or purple is a sacred thing. We are born that way. Being gay is a choice of lifestyle.
Now where and how are Christians trying to restrict women's reproductive rights? This whole thing started with Obama telling the Catholic church that they have to provide contraceptives on their health care plans. The Catholic church does not believe in contraceptives or any type of birth control. Whether a person agrees or disagrees with that has nothing to do with it. That is their belief. Obama infringed on the Catholic church's beliefs and went against the first amendment under the bill of rights. The Catholic church fought back but lost. Then he used this incident to proclaim that women's reproductive rights were being taken away. Where? How? is that happening? You see, he can't run on his record so he is going to use underhanded lies to stir up the people. Another one of his tactics to divide using lies.

No, it's not. It is overwhelmingly determined by factors in utero and upbringing, that generally cannot be controlled for. Gay people are born that way.

Yes and yes again. Just because you feel a tendency to act in a certain way does not mean you have to act on that tendency. You can not choose to be black or white or male or female, but you can choose what type of lifestyle you live. How is that being "absolutely revolting"?
