Thanks. I followed the link and read the posts. That thread was from way back in 2005...I've often wondered if anyone ever changes their mind here and I've thought about starting such a thread myself. At the other end of the spectrum, I consider walking away from this forum myself on almost a daily basis. In fact, just this morning, I was going to start a thread where I said "Good-bye". To a large degree, I feel that I'm wasting my own time here. It's mainly because I've had to work at home so much lately that I'm still even here. I'm really not into "butting heads" with anyone. Plant. Water. Believe God for the increase. One last thing...

When I said that sbvd was wasting his time if he thought that he was going to change my mind, I was referring SPECIFICALLY to what I've stated on this thread. IOW, I always listen to what the other side has to say and weigh it accordingly.

There are books of that nature out there, have even been made into movies. Movies which I have refused to watch, and books which I have refused to read. That is because it actually does call evil good and good evil, unlike HP, which actually has a Christian basis. Some of us, as I said, are actually able to distinguish between them.

I don't begrudge anyone for making a personal choice on what sort of entertainment they wish to abstain from or enjoy. But I can't help but feel that when one has taken it into certain directions or certain areas that my only desire when in conservation with such people is to: back up slowly, maintain a smile as I talk to them, then get out of their presence asap. I can't help but feel their capacity to distinguish fantasy from reality is so dim that if they feel the need for so much self cencorship in such areas better I'm not around if they have some episode and confuse one for the other.

I also can't help but wonder how many Christians would object to some protagonist in a story that's mysticism,etc is based in say Buddhism or Hinduism or some other surviving modern religion.

Authors of these type of books certainly know what they're doing:

"I consider that I've made the Craft accessible to people who would never read a book about Witchcraft per se, but who would read a fantasy novel or a memoir of life with a rock star. I posted this quote just to illustrate that while it may be a fantasy on the surface, it still exposing our kids to practices of darkness, which I'm sure makes the enemy well pleased.

While it may not have been J.K. Rowlings intent to be such a instrument for the enemy, as I believe she has said she believes in God, the enemy sees it as an easy open door into the minds of our youth.

If we think back to Bewitched. I know I grew up never even giving it pause that it was about a "witch" as in a witchcraft dark kind of witch. To me it was just harmless fun. But when you step back and look and how things have grown to what our children are getting exposed to now, we realize how smart the enemy actual is. He started small, where we didn't notice, and slowly he's been building and desensitizing us to infiltrating more and more acceptability of things that are not Godly.

I think many would in certain Christian camps. At one time I would have because in more fundamentalist circles only the Bible is needed. It's quite a dreary existence and one I am glad to be over

I believe that there are some who, for whatever reason, feel the need to steer clear of things that draw their attention away from God, and that is fine, until it comes to discussions like this where they feel that anyone who doesn't see things their way is not following the Lord.

I believe that this area of discussion (reading fictional novels) falls under the arena of adiaphora, a term used by theologians referring to things which were "scripturally" neutral, by which they meant neither forbidden nor required by the scriptures. And as such, I believe it falls to each believer to know if things like this will impede their relationship with Christ. It is a responsibility, I do not deny that, but I don't believe that all of us are led down the same path because the Lord knows what will tempt us away from Him and what won't.

Outside of course from my social area, what does or does not entertain someone is not something I really care about. If someone likes having hot wax poor over their nethers while being called Um Papa Mow Mow ok. *shrugs* Not my cut of tea. There are of course situations in which people's ideas can interfere with others ideas and we see that everyday. Civilization is a pillar built of compromise.

A more pertinent question is do I think some see terror in areas I see piffle? The answer would be yes and they are welcome to their(imho) terror at piffle. < staff edit >

Again, those who endorse Harry Potter books/movies as probably harmless and not sinful, do you also approve of going to a fortune-teller to have an astrology chart or tarot card reading, and do you also approve of going to various channelers/spiritists to talk to dead people/spirits?

I already did. I indicated that I thought that implying that they were even remotely similar to each other is obscene. It is just a way for you to make yourself better than someone else, IMO.
