  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

To be honest if you think keeping the 10 commandments can cause you to get the remission of sins then you're silly. The Lord our passover was sacrificed, so one is unleavened by that alone. Of course as a unleavened lump you do not sin anymore. You adding anything is in essence a Pharisee act. The Lord said "beware the leaven of the Pharisees". The Pharisees kept the law blamelessly, did you know that? Or was Paul speaking in vain when he was recalling in his past of when he used to be a Pharisee?

The pharisees couldn't have kept the law blamelessly because they were hypocrites. Maybe they were self righteous and only thought they kept the law blamelessly.

Mt 23:2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
Mt 23:3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
Mt 23:4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
Mt 23:5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,

Mt 12:10 And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.
Mt 12:11 And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?

You shall have no other gods before me.

You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

You shall not murder.

You shall not commit adultery.

You shall not steal.

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”

I temporarily removed the Sabbath commandment. Which of these remaining commandments am i not obligated to obey?

I vote for none of the above. However, I temper my vote upon your definition of "obligated". If you mean that God requires unconditional and absolute obedience of Christians to these commandments, you are hopelessly mistaken. On the other hand, if you mean that God would like you to obey them out of love to Him then it is a different story.

All (and the whole law) are summarized in the 2 commandments that Jesus spoke of. No need for the more rigid tables of stone.

If I am mistaken, I'm not sure "hopelessly mistaken" is correct. I have the lord and so i have much Hope. Am i obligated as a Christian to obey the commandment that says not to use Gods name in vain?

If i repeatedly used the lords name in vain or put another God before Him inside a Church setting, and the Church leaders told me to stop but i refused and said "i'm not obligated to the 10 commandments", wouldn't they have the authority and obligation to remove me from that church for the sake of the congregation?

Yes, but are the laws of stone known as the 10 Cs now made void? Can we now say thou shall kill? Thou shall commit adultery? Thou shall put other Gods before Him?

Would you kindly tell me exactly what you mean by "obligated"? Thank you.

As a Christian i'm bound or obliged to not kill, or Put other Gods before Him or use His name in vain. Of course i will fail to do this sometimes then i'm obliged to allow Grace to sustain me and then i'm obliged to obey the commandments once again. I'm obliged to obey and even go further, im obligated to forgive or i wont be forgiven, to not judge so i wont be judged, to show mercy so i will be shown mercy.

Romans 3:21-22
But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;

When it says 'Righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed' means that it speaking of the Christ. When it says "Witnessed by the law and the prophets" it is speaking of the sacrificial law in particular but all the law in totality, and of course all the prophecies of him too. Then it goes on to say the righteousness of God by faith in Jesus Christ to everyone who believes. In this passage it states righteousness is not found in the law but apart from it, in the Christ.

Really guys if you're going to try to be justified by keeping the law instead of believing Christ then you're not righteous.

Christ also said he came to fulfill the law and the prophets and not to abolish it. I will expound on this with Hebrews 10:1.

Hebrews 10:1
For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect.

"The law having a shadow of good things to come" means that the law was a placeholder till the real deal came, CHRIST. Then it says "can never with these same sacrifices offered year by year make those who approach perfect" is saying that it is speaking about the sacrificial law in particular. The day of atonement even more specified. Lev 16:20-22. Anyways it goes on to say that the law can never make one perfect. But the Lord him self has through his atonement.

Is this hard to understand?

But that would be a false dichotomy since one can not love God and his/her neighbor and killed him/her, or commit adultery, or put other God's before Him. The whole of the text of ten commandments (except for the fourth) are within the NT but within grace.

Correct me where I am mistaken, but I understand you to mean that you are only obligated to keep these commandments insofar as you are willing and able to do so. When you fail to keep them then Grace sustains you, but immediately puts you back on the treadmill of trying to keep the commandments. Grace, at best, is a taskmaster that picks you up when you fall down and puts you back to work at keeping something you are bound to break time and again.

Speaking for myself i never said or believed that obeying law makes me righteous, it makes me obedient. But as i fail to be obedient, grace is needed to make me righteous. Can we now say that the law is void? Can we say Thou shall kill? Thou shall use Gods name in vain? Thou shall put another God before Him?

Even Paul said you shouldn't use freedom to indulge in sin.

But still, it is freedom.

I see it as Gods will. Without the commandment to condemn me, what do we need Christ for? Without the 10 C's Christs sufferings are meaningless. If we void the law that Christ saves us from, then we void the meaning for Christs death along with it.

Doesn't the New Testament teach us to be Holy? Doesn't being Holy mean to learn to obey the Commandments? What makes a holy lifestyle if not obeying Gods Commandments which are also Holy?

Does this mean we have freedom to disobey Gods commandments? Freedom to Kill, to use Gods name in vain or put other Gods before Him? To commit adultery with another mans wife or covet and steal the things that belong to him?

This sounds like the opposite of what the new testament defines Christ or a Christian to be.

We're supposed to be like Christ and Christ obeyed the 10 Commandments and so did His apostles

Nope as a Cristian one has no desire to do those things according to Gal 5.

Why are you trying so hard to establish an obligation to the law? Don't you like grace?
