any test I have taken have put me very much in the center of most issues.
I am big on freedom, so do not like big government that want to take that freedom away.

I do not see liberals as the enemy. I am very much for liberalism being the wave of the future in fact. Competing ideals against liberalism would be Islamism and secular leftism. As a Catholic I do see the left as an enemy to all Catholic teachings on morals an ethics. I do not see liberalism as that kind of enemy. On the contrary I see it as the fruition of Judeo-Christian belief.

My criticisms then are mainly leveled at leftist ideologues, and the Islamists that they so often cooperate with under the guise of multiculturalism. I am no friend either with the 'religious isolationists' of the right, whose perfect vision of heaven on earth makes the perfect the enemy of the good.

I am more fiscal conservative on spending issues, more motivated by fear of giving government larger control over our lives than anything else. I believe in general in subsidiarity i nthis regard, but recognize that there is a continuum on these ideas on how much public institutions are needed in our lives.

My participation in those controversies are therefore minimal, because Catholics do not, and probably should not, see eye to eye on what level of spending is best to serve the needs of the community.

On many things that the left support though, Catholic doctrine is clear, and the preponderance of the left makes no bones about being opposed to the pope and Catholic teaching. I see no middle ground here, and do not act as if there were just for the sake of partisanship.
I have little time for those who so advocate actually.

The only thing I could check in good faith was "pro-life", because none of the others apply to me, as a non-American who is neither liberal (that's right wing over here) nor politically conservative (that's so right wing that we don't even have them over here, except for the very small anti-catholic ["the pope is the antichrist" is in their program] calvinist party SGP who are against women voting and for the death penalty, the only party that is for the death penalty - and we have more than 10 parties to choose from so that's saying a lot).

But if there were an option for "politically left wing" or "moderate conservative socialist", or "green", I would check that, too.

That is I appreciate at least one liberal theoloogian on the outs with the Church on many things( Kung), like people like Teillard de Chardin and Rene Girard too, but I think that there is more wisdom in obeying and deferring to the authority of the Church, especially in those areas where you most strongly disagree.


If that wasn't true for me, then I would have no problem at all with same-sex marriage, birth-control, pornography, even abortion. I understand the intellectual arguments against all these things, believe that the Chruch is showing wisdom, backbone and strength for standing up for these things, but as for any strong emotional reaction against any of them—just not happening for me, sorry.
any arguments I offer for these are based on reason alone.
Heck, on one level I even see abortion and birth control as a way for God judgment to be the most merciful on a culture that feels too much, and is too racked with liberal guilt and self-loathing to have the will to go on.

My heart is not there, but my vote and my arguments are.

I know at one point years ago, when people were complaining about all the conservatives here, and I used you as an one example of one of the many here who swung left, you disagreed.
You stated the only position that you disagreed with Church teaching on was birth control.

Is that still the case?
Or are you supportive of same-sex marriage now, for example, too?

I guess I would catogorize myself as a pro-life liberal. I am against abortion in all it's forms except under condition of imminent threat to the mother's life, which I see more as self-defense than murder. I still have not decided on gay marriage. I don't see why a gay civil union can't be redefined to afford the same protections under the law as a marriage.

Yes I did. But I don't like lining my faith with those issues. There is no reason for it.

I clicked conservative and conservative Catholic because "Republican" and "Democrat" didn't fit me. MY hubby in the avatar is wearing a Republican tshirt because he is Republican but I don't know what I would politically affiliate myself with in reality.

Theres no such thing as conservative/liberal Catholic. It's just Catholic if you follow Church teaching as it is taught.

The whole liberal conservative things is a made up label...just as Taliban Catholic is a label. Just as made up & just as silly.

so being prolife is putting politics before faith or being for traditional marriage is something you dont want to line your faith with

the registration is simply a way for people to self-label so others can use it as a reference instead of trying to guess
