  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This Thread Will End All Debate On The Sabbath Once And For All

but not both on the Sabbath
My motto is, when in Israel, do as the Israelis do and observe Saturday, but when in America, do as the Americans do, observe Sunday :)

Shabbat as Social Reform

*snip*

In 1925, Rabbi Israel Herbert Levinthal observed, "If we see Jewish life crumbling before our very eyes in America it is mainly because of the fact that we have lost our Sabbath."
Rabbi Bernard Drachman, leader of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis, advocated that Jewish laborers be afforded the opportunity to keep Shabbat on Saturday and that Jewish shop owners be allowed to close on Saturday and open on Sunday.

I stumbled across the gospel of Thomas earlier today in what I believe to be divine intervention.. as I have been begreived over people arguing about the Sabbath lately.. The Gospel of Thomas is respected as having divine authorship however was not included into the NT cannon because they chose to only include 4 versions.. The gospel of Thomas if you are not familiar is a collection of Jesus's sayings.. this being the one that can finally put an end to this discussion once and for all.

27 "If you do not fast from the world, you will not find the (Father's) domain. If you do not observe the sabbath as a sabbath you will not see the Father."

If you wish to read the entirety of the gospel you can find it right here.

The gospel of thomas was written before the gospel of John was universally distributed . so ..

John 5:17
But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

seems to be the final word on the matter ;)

The Gospel of Thomas has been recognized as containing Gnostic teaching and has never been, at any time, accepted as either of Divine origin nor fulfilling the three canonical tests to make its inclusion in the canon of scripture a possibility.

Plus the fact that it was written after the 2nd century, long after both the apostles, and the eyewitnesses to both Christ and the apostles had died out, make it post the Judean response to these matters regarding the faith which was once for all "delivered to the saints". any extra biblical material, regardless of its apparent veracity can find no place in the cannon and therefore cannot be accepted as being of authoritative value.

In regards to this so called response of Jesus to the sabbath remember Jesus, time and time again in the gospels showed clearly that the religious leaders where in error with their blind devotion to the sabbath. I find it extremely hard to believe that Jesus would even contemplate the elevation of this sabbath to the point of being a means of salvation (as intonated by the aforementioned quotation".

One would be the reference to the Book of Enoch, that Jude quotes directly from as a favorable source - but the other non-Biblical book eludes me. What is it?

The Assumption of Moses, an apocryphal work. Some of the Early Church Fathers referenced it as the source of verse 9 of Jude (the dispute between the archangel Michael and the devil about the body of Moses). However, only a portion of that work still exists, and not the part that Jude allegedly cited.

A particularly hilarious one is:

Sounds like something out of the Quran :D

The Qur’an (pronounced [qurˈʔaːn]; Arabic: القرآن‎ al-qur’ān, literally “the recitation”) is the central religious text of Islam,[1] also sometimes transliterated as Quran, Koran, Qur’ān, Coran or al-Qur’ān. Muslims believe the Qur’an to be the verbal book of divine guidance and direction for mankind.

The psuedo Gospel of Thomas was never included in the canon of Scripture. It was viewed spurious and uninspired. Therefore anything it says about the 7th day Sabbath cannot be looked at being the basis of doctrine.

I want you to understand that grace isn't what your perceive it and is not obtained just through believing.. its something obtained through works and is gained when due not just because you want it..

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Ouchh, some one doesn't read their canonized Bible. ;)

Yup...I'd say this ends it all right.

It does not say much for a teachng when the believers in it are forced to use Gnostic material....
...That claims Jesus taught a woman should become a man!

That's like saying Christ "inspired" Blur to write the "Boys and Girls" song!
...WOW!

This thread title reminded me:

Jeremiah 14:14
Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.
