  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

HH, it does not help your point by continuously using name calling.

Yes, it appears that Matthews altered her previous comments in his question. He was wrong for doing this.

If she heard his question, she should have answered it. It was probably a question that would have been better asked outside of a noisy crowded room.

To be honest, I was watching the MSNBC coverage during that exchange, and I came away not knowing exactly what point Matthews was trying to make about Bachmann being "hypnotized". It came out of left field.

I was wondering if the transcript on the link was complete. Your post makes me thing it was.

I watch a bit of football. Watch a couple of games and you are almost sure to hear the anouncers comment in some way that a running back has to be patient, he has to wait for and setup blocks.

Matthews blew it, not in hte line, but in not being patient. He did not wait for the hole to open. He asked once about the investigation. She gave an answer that was totally unrelated to the question. Outside of politics her reply would be considered either rude or stupid. In politics it is considered standard.

He needed to ask again, and then a third time when he should have included a comment proding her to answer the question he asked.

And then if she still came with an answer that was totally unreleted, then he could have used his hyponitized line.

He was far to eager to use his line.

The whole premise of the question was built upon a lie!
However, it would be a good thing to investigate the Communist infiltration into the "progressive" party.

Bachman was trying desperately to set this thing up and I think neither of them got what they expected and the whole thing was embarrassing for both of them, but particularly for Bachman since she was prepared for this thing. Bachman refused to go on Hardball ever since Chris got her to say what she really thought about investigating "un-American" members in congress, and then all of the sudden her handlers call MSNBC and make her available on election night. There's a reason they call his show Hardball. (see The Story behind the Chris Matthews-Michele Bachmann Election Night Interview - TVNewser)

She outsmarted him. Deal with it.

So no answering questions is now considered outsmarting?

It's so ironic that these far right people love to scream and shout about how they're not typical politicians and are for the people and blah blah blah. Well she just showed she's a typical politician. Instead of answering the question, she ignored it.

Just once I'd like to see a politician not regurgitate some talking point and actually answer a question such as this.

Mathews was trying to get her flustered (like last time) so he'd get a good sound bite.

She stayed on what she wanted to say and he had to go long to try a shake her up, it didn't work and there he is looking a bit silly.

He'll get the boot too (a la Obermann) once the deal with comcast is all said and done.

(If ComcastMSNBC still wants a loony leftie, I hear Alan Grayson will be looking for work soon.)

Comcast is in the business of making money, and MSNBC's lineup has been good at that. They don't want to risk going the way of CNN.

Your outrage HH would be a little more believable if you weren't so prone to call people names yourself.

Oh and...

MADDOW: Can we talk for a second about what they're trying to do there? With that sign they're trying to say MSNBC is in the tank and NBC is in the tank for Obama. That's what they're trying to say.

Gosh Rachel ya think?

Does Chris Matthews owe Michele Bachmann an apology?

I am so sick of politicians playing word games. If they are not going to answer the questions asked about what they said BEFORE the election then they are just playing games.

Matthews or any person asking a politician about what they said and then trying to get an answer is doing the voters a favor. At least Matthews lets everybody know what kind of show he has and sticks with his tough questions. After all the politicians know that his show is called HARDBALL!

Matthews is irritating at times but I am more irritated by politicians that avoid addressing their words and promises. Remember what Harry Truman said, “If you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen” If a politician can not stand the heat of some one asking them to answer a question about their own words then they need to get out of politics.

Obviously. it does not matter to you if what Chris said was true or not.

Quote of Chris MATTHEWS:
Will you use the subpoena power which you will have as a majority, if you claim the majority of the Congress, it looks like you will, will you use the subpoena power to do what you said on my program you would do, investigate the Democratic members of Congress for un-American activities?

Because Bachmann did not say that Matthew’s statement was not true I can only assume that Matthew’s statement was true. I don’t watch all of Matthew’s programs. After reviewing the video that you provided I can see that Matthew’s tweaked her words and misstated what Bachmann said weeks earlier. Thank you Herbie for providing me with the facts.

Reply by Herbie
The fact is the Bachmann never said that at all. So the whole premise of the question was built on a lie.
I agree!

Reply by Herbie
Bachmann was graceful and respectful with her answers and wasn't going down the sewer lane that Chris wanted.

You are right but she did not address the question and tell Matthews that he lied about her statement. I would have loved to see her do that.

My main point is not to be a cheerleader for Matthews or any other party that uses the media to manipulate. My main point is to make politicians and others answer questions about subjects that were brought up to get elected or to get ratings

After reviewing the video you provided I see two issues that trouble me:

1 Matthews manipulation (Lie) of Bachmann’s statement

2 Bachmann ignoring the topic even though it was a lie. She needed to let the public know what you helped me to know. That is that Matthew’s (lie) journalism and/or bias diminishes his credibility.

I don't mind admitting that I was wrong when someone presents third party credible facts for us to learn.

Thanks again Herbie!

I agree, Fantine. Maybe they should be held to normal standards of decency, as those on the Right think Matthews and those on the Left should be held to. Most definitely those on the Right who think it is okay to shout down anyone else who tries to speak, or even worse, physically assaults someone trying to exercise their right to free speech should be held to normal standards of decency. I am afraid that those on the Right would come out on the short end of that stick much more than those on the Left. Only, when those on the Right break it, their supporters never will admit that what the person did was wrong.

Michele Bachmann is anti-American.

She wants to phase out Social Security and Medicare.

She doesn't want America to be part of the "international global economy" (when every economist in the world recognizes that protectionism spells death to the economic growth of a nation.)

She doesn't rule out the possibility of preemptive nuclear strikes against the Middle East.

She favors domestic oil and gas drilling without the environmental protections to keep it from destroying our environment.

These are not American positions.

Look at the first Thanksgiving. Pilgrims and Indians came together to thank God for the harvest and share their prosperity.

We need to stop measuring our economic recovery by gains in the stock market which only benefit a few (and are sometimes gained by increased "productivity"---i.e. downsizing and layoffs) and start measuring it by how many Americans share in that prosperity.

They're not? What is un-American about them?
