  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Will suicide send a person to Hell?

This was something that I have been wondering for some time, where in the bible does it actually say that suicide will send you to Hell? That is, if we were to assume that Hell was an actual place. But, any cited scripture where "Hell" isn't explicitly referenced will do as well, I guess.

While not exactly Scriptural, Martin Luther speculated that the taking of ones own life could very well be the result of a direct attack by the devil; and that it may very well be no different than if one were set upon by robbers who murdered the person. The result being that the flesh is destroyed by the sinful act, but the soul is not.

We must however not judge, but in faith commend all of the departed souls to our Lord's eternal care as He is the only judge.

If 97% of the human population goes to hell (according to the requirements set out by conservative evangelicals) then anyone who commits suicide will, on average, have a 97% chance to go to hell.

Not having faith in Christ means we are condemned.

He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
John 3:18

If we have faith in Christ, we aren't likely to kill ourselves, are we?

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
Isaiah 26:3

Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
2 Corithians 1:4

We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;
2 Corinthians 4:8

Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;
2 Corinthians 7:6

I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
John 14:18

Well this is fascinating. Can you give me a source for a conservative evangelical theologian making this argument? Or is this tongue-in-cheek?

Consider this: The bible does not spell out in black and white if you committ suicide you will go to hell, but on the other hand it does not say you will go to Heaven either. If people actually knew for a fact that committing suicide would take them straight to heaven, then there would be alot of people doing it.

(Mark 3:28-29 KJV) Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:

its been said before, the bible doesnt clearly state which way you will go for committing suicide. But allow me to share something with you.

John 17:3 - This is eternal Life. That they may know You, The only True God and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

If A believer personally knows God, (not just know OF Him) then that is what eternal life is!
But what if the devil brings upon him such destruction, like say for example...what happened to Job, and that believer cant handle it and commits suicide. Will Christ throw that person in hell? If He did, that would make Christ a liar, and we all know Christ in NOT a liar.
So the REAL question is did the believer KNOW God before committing suicide?

I assume if it's a lonely person who ended themselves, they go to heaven because God will probably feel sorry for them and invite them to heaven. if it's a person who goes on a killing spree and then does themselves, they go the opposite way.
I guess so, it probably would depend on the nature of their desire to go on a killing spree. As much as it as it hard on the family of the victims, it's not always the person's fault if something drive them crazy enough to take another person's life.

If you're referring to the actual meaning of the word "hell", then yes. Suicide is a good way to get put in the "hole" and into "hades", the unseen state of death. At some point though, the dead one will get up for judgement. Who really knows what happens then? No one here I'll bet. :)
