  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Some Evangelical Christians evangelizing in predominantly Christian countries

I would be quite amazed that anyone in Pella, Iowa was being forced to do anything. This is, after all, a free country. I would be also quite amazed that any missionary (Protestant or otherwise) anywhere on this planet would be allowed to force anyone into their religion. In fact, in India there are strict anti-conversion laws in several states.

On the other hand, I am not in the least bit surprised that many religions work extremely diligently to retain their members, upon pain of death as in Islam.
then what were you complaining about? so what if there's a mission there?

Why do some Evangelical Christians go to such countries that are predominantly Christian, such as South America, Greece, or Russia (for examples) and try to preach the word of Christ and such when these people are already Christian? Why not go to other countries who have not heard the gospel or are of different religions, such as Muslim, Hindu, etc.? Doesn't make sense to me.

Mark 16:15
He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.

Simply because a nation is considered Christian does not mean that a portion of its inhabitants have not heard the Gospel message.

As the ole adage says..."safety in #'s"...

Matt 10:26 No then being afraid of them, for is nothing having been covered which not shall be being uncovered and hidden which shall not be being known.
27 Which I am saying to ye in the darkness say ye! in the Light. And which into the ear ye are hearing proclaim ye!/khruxate <2784> (5657) on the housetops
[Luke 12:3]

Matt 24:16 "then those in the Judea let be fleeing into the mountains.
17 "The one on the housetop, no let be descending! to lift/take-away out of the house of him

They came to the USA leaving their jurisdiction. America was founded by those seeking religous freedom and toleration. Protestants.

And since America is the melting pot that it is, the OC followed to administer to the faithful in a new country, problem is, the country was Protestant and the OC began to envangelize right in the backyard.

Who does the OC send missionaries to? Pagans? You know as well as I, the OC does not think that the Protestants are Christians and vice-versa.
The Orthodox came here for jobs and to live in better conditions just like nearly all immigrants. They set up their churches (I know my Greek background), and did not evangelize on the corner, trying to pass out information. Sorry, didn't happen.

That is a myth taught in our schools. The Puritans came here to set up a theocratic state of their own so that they could exclude everybody else. Religious freedom - Not.
Exactly.

So did my grandparents. My grandfather was from Lithuania and married to my grandmother, who was of German/Dutch lineage.
They lived in ole Cicero, Ill [and they were Catholic].....:)

Dorthy, the only thing that your post tells me is that the Evil One has your ear. Whyelse bring in a conversation fom another board, no names or introductions of who is speaking to whom. Pittyful
I didn't bring that subject into the conversation, so your whole post doesn't make sense. You may want to ask LLOJ why he brought the convo in from another board. I'm sorry you are confused.

Another misunderstanding ...

The OC does not think Christians who are not members of the OC are OC; it does not say they are not Christian.

Yeah, tell that to the Greeks who say they landed first in Florida.
^_^ About a month ago, I watched a DVD on the history of Greeks who came to America. No where in there did it say that they were in Florida first, but what was interesting was that they were treated with prejudices and lumped in with the Chinese. I'd heard of us being lumped in with the Italians, but this was one I hadn't heard of, but only in the Florida area did the americans think this. They didn't like that the Greeks had lucrative fishing businesses.

OC missioning(evangelizing).................
no street corner for the OC folk, they're better than that. No, most always find the OC in the colleges attracting young minds with the 'mystery of the ancient faith', Come and see!. There will be one maybe two bearded dudes dressed in black dress, Cossacks, selling books and music of the Byzantine Chant....oooh...such mystery when the incense burn and fog up the candle lit room. Not one bible for sale, but many books of the Desert Fathers are available.
