• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

In an attempt to stay within OP, peaceful evangelism is a good thing, war is not.
Is war ever inevitable?

They came to the USA leaving their jurisdiction. America was founded by those seeking religous freedom and toleration. Protestants.

And since America is the melting pot that it is, the OC followed to administer to the faithful in a new country, problem is, the country was Protestant and the OC began to envangelize right in the backyard.

Who does the OC send missionaries to? Pagans? You know as well as I, the OC does not think that the Protestants are Christians and vice-versa.
don't tell me what i know or don't know. the Orthodox i know do NOT think that way

The east does not have "Augustinian theology" ... we do not accept his teachings. He is a Saint for his deep repentance. If we do not accept or live his teachings, how can they be said to be part of us ?
It would be like saying the UCC (descended from the Congregationalists, who descended from the Pilgrims) believes that Quakers and Baptists should be persecuted - because the pilgrims persecuted them.

In the east, war is considered always evil. It is sometimes a necessary evil, where defense is called for, but it is still evil.
Then why is Augustine Commemorated on June 15 in the OC?

Another misunderstanding ...

The OC does not think Christians who are not members of the OC are OC; it does not say they are not Christian.

Yeah, tell that to the Greeks who say they landed first in Florida.

So there's another (I was giving a lesser known example).

But I don't understand how this responds to the factual error re: who is Christian ?

Thank you dear brother.

War; as long there are men, there will be war. Many Christians fought in wars for our country, USA, and they are to be honored. However, imo, our government should avoid war, especially on foreign soil.

If you do not believe there is any just war, then why do you honor men that fought in an unjust cause?

Do you honor any man that simply obeys his government's orders to kill, as long as he is a Christian?

oh my brother who lays snares, yes, I honor all those who serve in the military. Try as you might, there is no such thing as 'just war'. If you ever been on the battle field, you would see no justices in it, only survival.

 There were many during the period of the Vietnam war that either deserted or burned their draft cards simply because they refused to kill others in what they felt was an unjust war.

I know, because I had to join in '68 to avoid being drafted :)

Is war really a part of the human condition? Did Jesus not change that? I would like to see a thread on that because I don't believe that everyone agrees that it's inevitable.
History testifies that War, like greed, is part of the human condition. Did Jesus force everyone to renounce the world and follow him? No. So it remains today part of the human condition.

Only at the second coming will it be eliminated.

Well, I served 24 years in the armed forces of the USA and have seen my share of piles of dead bodies. Fortunately, I have been spared the task of killing.

But I am not laying snares. There is certainly just war if for no other reason that evil still rules the hearts of many men. Surrender to injustice is not just, it is simply cowardice.

Beware the Snare

Reve 2:14 But I am having against of thee a few.
That thou are having there ones-holding the teaching of Balaam, who taught to-the Balak to be casting a snare before the sons of Israel to be eating idol sacrifices and to prostitute.

No 'just war' doctrine is of God but by man.

If you are 50, then you did not see viet nam, and probably retired prior to the second Gulf war, right?
