  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is war really a part of the human condition? Did Jesus not change that? I would like to see a thread on that because I don't believe that everyone agrees that it's inevitable.

In the EO, the need to resort to war is seen as a human failure. So it is evil, but sometimes needed for the defense of the weak, etc.

As there was not war in man's natural created state (in the Garden), then it is not "normal". The instincts given by God for preservation of life, gone awry, become passions which tend on a large scale to result in wars. The true war (the only good war) is against one's own passions and sins.

(The Byzantine State rarely engaged in offensive war. To this end, they focused heavily on diplomatic efforts.

Where offensive war was used, it was typically to return land and people lost in a defensive war. There was an early offensive war against Persia, where the Christians were badly persecuted, and a later one to allay border incursions.)

A mission Church is not the same as missionising; mission Churches are beginning parishes. A new parish location is requested; if approved, a mission parish is started. Often there is not a full-time priest there.

Are the EO from this mission parish working to de-convert the Reformed Christians in the area ?

The short answer is yes. If you look up their webpage you will see that virtually everyone in the photograph has blonde hair and blue eyes. There never have been any Orthodox Christians in Pella other than the pirest and, perhaps a handful of workers the the Pella Corporation.

That's pretty much the justification that was offered for why most of the wars in history were fought. ;)

I am well aware of this, b7. I am grateful for the freedom I have in this country and for the "goodness" for the most part. But when one peels away the layers, the U.S. is just another country as other countries in this world (UK, Australia, France, etc.) that have their good and bad sides. No country is perfect. This is the point I think needs to be made because growing up in the country (especially being a military brat and married to military the past 12, almost 13 years) we are taught that the U.S. is the best country on the planet.

That was drilled into my little brain in school. During my middle life I abandoned that notion and believed that the U.S. was really not better or worse than most countries. If was later when I actually met and interacted with a wide range of international people, some of whom had legally emigrated here, some who had not, and some who are still living in their own countries, that I came to realize that the U.S., like it or not, is the envy of the world. What other country has flooded Haiti with relief aid following the hurricane even close to what the U.S. has done - and that in the midst of a major recession? For all his talk, Hugo Chavez should be ashamed of himself and of his political administration. In the U.S. he would be ousted in the next election for his callousness to Haiti.
