  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Wow. I thought the 3rd episode was great!! Although I'm sure I'm getting more confused the longer this goes on for!

Yeah. With all this time travelling thing, I was wondering if there were going to be any casualties. Because of the constant episode in series 4, there was Desmond who had Penny as his constant and that seemed to 'save' him somehow. That was also when the flashbacks and flashforwards stopped for him. The 'radio guy' on the ship also bled severely and died, and it was suggested, he didn't have a constant, and Des would have suffered the same fate he did, if he didn't find his constant.

Also when he seemed to freak out when he first noticed Charlotte's nose bleeding in the first episode of series 5. It's like he knew something more serious was starting to happen to her than just a simple nose bleed.

Daniel also had written in his notebook 'if anything goes wrong, Desmond will be my constant'. That was in ep 1 or 2 of this series, can't remember which one exactly as they were both shown back to back on TV last week.

So I'm wondering if we'll learn more about this constant thing as time goes on. I think it's a significant concept in all this time travel.

I also hope they bring Claire back in this series. It's so strange how she took off, and it's still annoying me now.

Does anyone have any idea, why when Locke went to see Jacob he referred to him as Christian?! And didn't he take on the form of Jack and Claire's dad?? And why was Locke referred to as Jeremy?

Charles Widmore doesn't have a scottish accent, he's played with a posh kind of english accent, the actor who playes young Widmore has a more generic english accent, not really cockney (nice reveal that one though!)

But what has always annoyed me throughout the show is the lack of effort some of the actors put in to try and put on any kind of authentic accent. In this episode there were two (the janitor and the woman who answers door to Desmond) who obviously think that people in england speak in a Dick van Dyke style [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]-er-ney accent. They don't! not even in Oxfordshire!! (Rant over)

I was thinking, for some reason, that Widmore resided in Scotland. Maybe because that's where Desmond was locked up.

But rewatching the episode yesterday, I found that the accents of both young and old Widmore were sounding a bit more... British (Sorry Fijian... no offense). :)

But as for the actors playing the roles... are they "putting on" an accent to play the role? Or are we just hearing their natural accents without any thought as to where in England they may be portraying their character?

The thing with Hugh Laurie is that when I listen to him (on House), I'm not hearing an "American" accent. I'm just hearing him speak the way I'd hear just about anyone speak.

If I were to bump into him (House) in the street and strike up a conversation, his accent wouldn't stick out to me as wierd.

lol just me then. He just doesn't sound right. The accent does not seem naturally at all.

I think that there's a HUGE population of people whose jaws hit the floor whenever they hear Hugh Laurie speaking in his natural British accent.

All the bad English accents nearly put me off the episode. Not everyone in the UK is a cockney.

Lol I know! It feels like Americans believe all British people speak with a London accent sometimes...we're a diverse bunch with our accents despite being a tiny island! :)

So, officially speaking, how many accents are there? And what makes one different from the other?

(Not sure if you all noticed... but I typed this with a British accent.)

Been trying to learn this myself....So, I'm interested in the answer too, please. ;)

Well England has exactly 46 'counties' (bit like states but smaller) and they don't their own 'independent laws' like the USA seem to lol. (Just strange mannerisms and accents lol, and some cultural traditions). So there must be at least 46 different accents, and that's just England alone, not including Scotland, Ireland and Wales. :)

Where I live, you can travel just over half an hour away, and be in a completely different county where people speak very differently!

Here's a pic of most of the counties in England if anyone is curious. I think a few are missing though:
