  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Question is...if they do reply in a confrontational way, how do you react?

One can react with the stance of...."That's your opinion. I have a different one. Let's leave it at that"....or maybe respectfully elaborate on their point a little and then reply with ...."That's your opinion. I have a different one. Let's leave it at that"....and then just rest securely in what it is they believe in and in how they think they should conduct themselves as a Christian.

OR...they can do the opposite of that, which is taking offence (God knows why) of the other person's lack of understanding or perceived innapropriate behaviour, and then go on to engage in a fight with that person (...which, isn't what we Christians do. That's not our nature).

Who cares who will turn what into a fight. Are you allowing other's actions to affect your degree of happiness and thus your consequent behaviour as a Christian??? That's not how we live our lives, friend.

Peace

Sometimes my mother interprets me trying to have what I consider an enjoyable discussion an attempt on my part to argue.
This is because I enjoy ...heh... attacking issues head on, I like a bit of an aggressive debate (when I can keep up - I don't mind losing, but I don't like to fall behind). She on the other hand abhors confrontation - and when I forget that I can upset her by getting into "discussions" she thinks are fights.

That no matter what you type, no matter what your words are, there is somebody who will find a way to turn it into a fight of some sort?

From my experience I have written stuff that nobody responds to which suggests your premise is faulty - or is this what you mean by a 'fight' - someone who disagrees?

This is the debate section and subsequently I think it only reasonably that you can expect to be challenged on what you write. This is what debate is all about - to find the weakness in your argument. That does not mean you have to accept every counter point but it does sharpen up you knowledge base.

From my experience things turn nasty when someone can no longer support their argument and rather than quietly drop out of sight for a while and do a bit of thinking and research, decide to respond by attacking the person.

I use the forum to further my own research. Rather than just repeating what I've heard, I go searching for information. In this respect those that disagree with me are actually doing me a favour - they are forcing me to go the extra mile - to put a bit of grunt into my thinking.

Oh, just because someone might have different opinion does not therefore equate to them not respecting you.

All the very best for the New Year.

Where does it say this is a debate section?

See, there's the problem! You Catholics insist on twisting everything I say; it's the only way you can feel like you are right!!!!

(j/k)

I know what you are saying!

Do the math kid.

ALL have sin.

SIN is of the Devil.

Who then is the somebody?

Look to yourself first. It's a hard pill of fact to swallow.

enjoy!

I am sure sin is part of the problem. But it does not explain everything, for the same sinful humans are in other forums and it is not like here at all. What is worse I see no difference between christians debating with atheists than debating among themselves.

My point is that there must be other problem that sin. I don't know which one it is, which explains my frustation in part. Maybe it could be that we are assuming too much, or expecting some different.

In any case, I was only sharing a feeling. There are many times I do not respond because I fear to only add fuel to the fire. And sometimes after having filled a long post I just delete everything or not press that button.
