• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

That no matter what you type, no matter what your words are, there is somebody who will find a way to turn it into a fight of some sort?

Usually but if you are strong in your beliefs it shouldn't be much of a problem.

Maybe kinda sorta?
No, I dont find that no matter what I type
or say someone will turn it into a fight.
However, I do understand what you mean.
And there ARE Some folks here who are
very aggressive and zealous over their
pet doctrines etc.

My problem is that when I see something that
is even a bit "out of order" I feel a strong desire
to set it straight.
So if someone says that money is the root of all
evil, it's almost like a compuslion for me to stop
and correct that misconception.

I would that i could just 'let it go'.

But I am not. Regretably, there is not a fuzzy Catholic icon :p.

I'm not a liberal because I am strongly against abortion or women priesthood, btw; but I also know I would not fit in any protestant congregation I am aware of. I'd love to be able to say otherwise, but right now the Catholic Church is simply the best match for me.

why would you not fit into any protestant assembly?

It would take a lot of time to explain. But to give just an example. Let's suppose I would like to explore Lutheranism. I go to the Missouri Synod, and I see things I'm OK with, but then you are supposed to use biblical interpretation methods that are many centuries too old -not debating that here, just giving an example, please, that would take ages to explain-. So I visit ELCA and then they compromise on abortion. Excuse me but that's a never.

Does it have to be a denomination with a name? Such as Luthren or Baptist ect. Have you just ever walked into an assembly just to sit and listen to what the Pastor is saying? I am tongue tied and don't know how to type what I am thinking. Ever done that ? ^_^

Yeah, but it feels too much like self-pity to hold on to it for more than a few seconds.

But I will admit you are on the short list of my favorite pinatas.;)
You made your entrance as Callitfreedom, criticizing the RC (my all-time favorite except-that-it's-so-easy thing to do). No you've retreated into an "impenetrable Latin" handle and seem to cling to what you can't commit to as fully as it demands.
Disappointing, but forgiveable because you're decent about it.

I think you might be heading toward a larger realization of the limitations of religion as opposed to spirituality.

Wanna argue about it?^_^

Money isn't the problem. Your lust for it is.
Isn't that what JESUS accused the Judean religious rulers of? Coincidentally this same word is used in the Jewish/Hebrew book of revelation concerning that mysterious "Babylon/Great City" . That book is underrated within Christianity in my humble view.

John 8:44 :Ye out of a father the Devil are and the desires/lust/epi-qumiaV <1939> of the father of ye, ye are willing to be doing.

Reve 18:14 And the fruition of the desire/lust/epi-qumiaV <1939> of the soul of thee, departed from thee. And all the sumptious-things and shinings perished from thee. And not still not no shall be finding them.

1939. epithumia ep-ee-thoo-mee'-ah from 1937; a longing (especially for what is forbidden):--concupiscence, desire, lust (after).
1937. epithumeo ep-ee-thoo-meh'-o from 1909 and 2372; to set the heart upon, i.e. long for (rightfully or otherwise):--covet, desire, would fain, lust (after).
1909. epi ep-ee' a primary preposition; properly, meaning superimposition (of time, place, order, etc.), as a relation of distribution (with the genitive case), i.e. over, upon, etc.;
2372. thumos thoo-mos' from 2380; passion (as if breathing hard):--fierceness, indignation, wrath. Compare 5590.

I did much harder translations when I was 14. ;)

It was the motto of the Austrian Empire.

Just picked up on your OP...

How would you see CF to be useful, or to develop, without using any sort of 'debate'? What about 1 Cor. 11:19 - where does that fit in your Christian lifestyle?

I believe Paul is speaking here not of debates but critizing the practice of a church

17 Now in giving these instructions I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse. 18 For first of all, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it. 19 For there must also be factions among you, that those who are approved may be recognized among you. 20 Therefore when you come together in one place, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper. 21 For in eating, each one takes his own supper ahead of others; and one is hungry and another is drunk. 22 What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I do not praise you.
