  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Sure, but in the wrong hands, a wine bottle could kill you. Or a pair of safety scissors. Or a piece of rope. Or a pair of bare hands.

Someone who would be willing to knife you with a Swiss Army knife of the type that I carry would probably be far better off going for you with a broken bottle, or a big stick. The blade is about 3cm long.

I'm not having a pop at you, and I'm fairly certain you wouldn't use it for criminal activities :p but why do you need to carry one?

Also, having a swiss army knife in your pocket is a much more accessible weapon than finding a broken bottle or a big stick.

For the scissors (I love the scissors!), the tweezers, the nail file, the toothpick... The knife is the bit I use the least, in fact.

You have no idea how often the scissors have come in handy. o_0

Sure. But on the other hand, unless you were carrying it with the blade flicked out, it'd be a right faff to get it out spontaneously. You need to get your fingernail into a tiny slot. :p

I have to admit, in 28 years, I've never once thought "I wish I had my swiss army knife on me". The scissors on mine never cut through anything anyway!

Yeah, sure, some are more stiff than others!

Mine's bigger than your's is!

Swiss army knife that is. The knife part is very useful for cutting cheese on a nice picnic. The corkscrew is rather nice for opening that bottle of wine, so I can empty it before using the wine bottle to kill someone.

Thinking of it I can kill with a waiters corkscrew pretty easily. It has a short hooked blade for cutting the foil on a wine bottle, very nasty if used with a slashing stroke.

Personally, I think anyone who is found with weapons that could be potentially life threatening, such as guns or knives, should be thrown in prison, no excuses, not that I expect a lot of people to agree with me. I think I could find it acceptable for someone to carry a can of mace on them, although I'm not entirely comfortable with the thought of everyone doing this.
Anything can be a weapon and potentially life threatening, so that argument would fail in most people's opinions. Thousands of people are killed each year in auto accidents from drink drivers, but that doesn't mean that all people operating cars are suddenly thrown into jail, that would be assinine.

Heck, I could kill someone with a BUTTERKNIFE, better yet, a pressure point as was taught in defensive martial arts.

Reasoning like that makes me all the more glad I live in the US and can legally own and operate a fire-arms, because THAT makes me feel a whole lot safer than any can of mace. ;)

I think ultimately it all boils down to what each person must do to make him/her feel the safest.

I know a lot of people said something about the device possibly causing the rapist to become violent to their victim...but I cannot image ANY guy would be able to think about anything else except getting the thing off :D

In the hands of the Kali-Silat instructor @ UGA? Yes. But I'd find anything with a blade intimidating in his hands. I'd find a silk scarf intimidating in his hands, as I saw him disarm and subdue a man twice his weight and a foot taller in 10 seconds using one while sparring. :)

On topic: stupid device. I think collapsible spring-steel batons make much better deterrents to most anything. Collapsible spring-steel batons + Kali training = major deterrent.

That's what I carry while I'm in civilian clothes, is my ASP baton. Not allowed to carry my handgun off duty. The Shhhk sound of drawing one out is almost as intimidating as racking the slide on a firearm to someone looking for trouble.

My knowledge of female Homosapien genitalia anatomy is lacking, but I thought that the hymen would stop the anti-rape device from being inserted if it was present.

Intact hymens may or may not be the case for virgins... but in any case the hymen is not some ultra thick layer of tissue with no opening at all that prevents the use of things like tampons.

Exactly - and if it is, it has to be surgically removed or reduced in order to permit the flow of menstrual blood...

Oh man, it's so handy...

The Swiss cards are quite good, too. My boyfriend has one in his wallet.

Exactly, and hymens vary in women.

Many women are virgins but do not have an intact hymen due to cycling, horseback riding, gymanstics, or other sports that require a lot of lower-body movement. And of course, tampons can also tear the hymen, along with gynocological visits and other medical procedures. On top of that, some women are born with almost no hymens at all, or just very thin ones.

A hymen thick enough to prevent a tampon or other device from being inserted may require medical care.

As for Swiss Army knives, I love them. They're great for broken nails - much better than chewing those hangnails off! - screwing in loose screws, cutting threads, unlocking pesky bathroom doors that sometimes lock themselves even when no one is in the bathroom, etc.

I'm not even a woman and I found the move from tearing hymens straight to Swiss army knifes frightening. :o

If I've got this correct, this device when inserted inside the female will hook onto the skin of the penis once penetrated by a rapist.

Good premise. Although I'm sure we'd have better results by tackling this issue as a whole as opposed to issuing a condom product.

...what if he sticks it in your ass, though?

Indeed...

Anal (or oral) rape, or rape with some object other than a penis, could end up being a consequence of this. Better to avoid getting raped at all, if you ask me.

Eh... just get a hollow titanium walking cane filled with the right amount of mercury so that when you swing it, all the mercury goes to the end to increase damage. Now that is a lethal weapon, and as far as walking sticks are concerned, just ask Gandalf how easy it is to get them pass security.

Hmm... wonder if they would allow it on a plane?

What if I am asleep and someone enters my house and tries to rape me? Golden rule... keep the device right next to you. Remember it is very easy to insert, and very quick too.

I thought this was the funniest of the Q&As.

Probably the saddest, too - I'm imagining some woman going to bed every night prepared for a rapist to enter her home and practicing quickly inserting the device. And I thought duck-and-cover drills were terrifying!

Actually, take a fourth of that number and that's the odds I have of getting in an auto accident.

I live in a dreadfully boring small town, so the odds of the auto incident is about ten times more likely than a fire-arms one, besides just about every 1 of 7 people has a carry-permit, so whose really gonna do something stupid around here? ;)

Hahaha, so true!
I see we agree on at least one thing. :D
