  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Obama and the Bombmaker's Church

There's more.

Let's move on from the tale of Senator Barack Obama's pastor, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, to another tale of Obama's United Church of Christ -- a denomination that he and I share.

Does the name Fuerzas Armadas de Liberacion Nacional -- Armed Forces of National Liberation -- ring a bell? You may remember this charming group by its initials, FALN . . .

How many more shady connections will it take before Obama throws in the towel?

Carey, iam confused how an anti-semitic jab could be seen in that post. Peeps are castigating obama based on how they PERCEIVE what the Rev has said. Yet, Bush was lovin' it up with the world's most brutal theocratic dictator. He has a relationship with them /Saudi Royals/ that stretches back 20 years. Also, when white ministers blamed 9E on gays, feminists etc there wasnt this outrage. When oreilly said we have a white male power structure there was no outrage. It's unadulterated hypocrisy.

I thought you were referring to Israel not Saudi Arabia.

I apologize.

But O'reilly merely spoke the truth. Why should there be outrage??

Actually even though there is no reason for outrage at his statement I am very surprise dLA did not get burned down or something hahhaaha;)

Don't think the Rev Wright is a little out of the mainstream? That perhaps Rev Wright offends more than this or that person?

I don't know, i'm not African-American. For all I know, it might be a fairly mainstream position for them.

And I don't find anything Rev. Wright says as offensive as what I hear/heard from the likes of Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, John Hagee, James Dobson, Fred Phelps etc ...

How does one find it somehow more insane and dangerous for someone to think that a government that once enslaved blacks would unleash a disease upon them than for someone to think that hurricanes and terrorist attacks were caused by the mere existence of homosexuals?

Thanks Carey :) Okay, so Oreilly spoke the truth by saying we have a white male Christian power structure. A black Rev says the same thing yet HE is the one called an ignorant racist? There have also been plenty of white ministers/groups that blame 9E on gays etc yet the level of outrage got nowhere close to this. At least the Rev was being honest when he said our foreign policies played a role in the attacks.

Wouldn't a church that actually teaches Christ's teachings be more useful?
You mean like, 'white Romans killed Jesus because he was black? ' Is this the kind of thing you'd like to be learning in church?

I'd like to think that if you had a doctorate and a masters in Theology, preached for 36 years,
and were the pastor of 8,000 souls, you'd at least have the sense to know why Jesus died.

Anyone else remember the outrage of Madonna's video portryaing Jesus as black? That is one example of racism because it isnt about historical accuracy. If that were the agenda there would be equal outrage over white blued pics of Jesus. Funny thing is, where is the outrage over those false depictions?

"I'm still in Bible country. I'm still in the text. Jesus was a poor black man that lived in a country and lived in a culture that was controlled by rich white people. The Romans were rich. The Romans were Italians, which means there were European. Which means they were white. "

Any evidence you'd like to post that Jesus was black I'd love to see it. How you can carry water that uses Jesus as a wedge to divide people based on their skin color amuses me. When Jesus said 'I come as a sword, maybe Rev. Wright thinks he meant cleave black from white?

Now we're comparing a secular music video with the words of a 36 year pastor of 8,000?
This is beyond apples and oranges. We'll have to come up with a new analogy. Stickbugs and skyscrapers, maybe?

Ummm, no. There was no comparison between a video and a Reverend. The comparison was based on the reactions to Jesus being depicted as black versus white. It could have been a picture, tv commercial, billboard, etc. The fact peeps take issue with that while being silent on the countless depictions of Jesus being white shows an indefensible double standard. If analogies arent understood it may be best to ask for clarification before giving a knee jerk reaction.

Where is the link or source for the quote of what Wright said? We do know Jesus had dark skin and most Americans would call him black just because of pigmentation. It seems Wright's point is being missed here but i never had any illusion comprehension was the goal.

Where is all this talk of Wright being a divider coming from? I havent seen any division at all. Those who are aware of racism are still together and those who either deny racism or are racist are still together. Could it be the 'division' rhetoric is nothing more than political pandering to attack the charge obama isnt a unifier? Naw! Couldnt be! Now way! Btw, Dr. King said Chicago was the most racist city he had ever visited. Yeah, those Christian ministers shooo liksa cawwssin' problums!

Not exactly. You said teach the Bible. I said teach Christ.

Bit of a difference there, if today's crop of Christians are any indicator...
And Wright did neither. "Bill did us [black people] the same way he did monica" is not the type of thing that is even allowed on these boards, but they came out of his mouth from behind the pulpit. He's a bigot and it's laughable how much defense he's getting.

Obama is running around saying he doesn't agree with his spiritual mentor of 20 years while some Obama supporters on the net are agreeing with Rev. Wright or making excuses for him.

Most amusing.

Most amusing.

You mean people who support a candidate still make up their own minds rather than agreeing with whatever their candidate says? Naw... that's crazy!

I see the problem. You seem to be unaware that teaching the Bible is teaching Christ's teachings. However, this discussion is about Obama so for further information on the relationship between Christ's teachings, the Bible and today's crop of Christians, please open a thread in a theology forum, but don't address me about here.

A lot of his sermons certainly seem to skirt Scripture. "God damn America, that's in the Bible, for killing innocent people". Now first off, how can God damn a nation? Now if he means to damn Americans, then we have another problem. Either his theology is seriously skewed, he is saying God should damn himself (himself meaning Wright), or he is not including himself as an American. It would be interesting to see which it is. I have my suspicions
