  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Think I'll sit down here for a bit... (6)

Ok everybody be nice to cerette- she isn't from the US! She has an excuse.... :)

Brett Favre has been the quarterback for the Green Bay Packers (Wisconsin) NFL football team for 18 yrs or so. He has been a pretty awesome QB, setting lots of records- very beloved to Packer fans. Hope that helps!
I did not know she was from another country.....that is a pretty good excuse. :)

Studeclunker--Tell George that I looked up grackles in my bird book. No wonder he never heard of them. Looks like they don'l live west of the Rockies.

Good luck with the garden. I still have over a foot of snow on mine. Everything is still frozen rock hard. Sighhhhh. There's a rumor it might get above freezing next week.

I'm not a football fan, but I do know who Brett is. I don't understand why everybody is so upset though. It's not like you're never gonna see this guy again. Won't Brett just join the other ex-football players who have been put out to pasture in the the announcers booth? That's what seems to happen in pretty much every sport.
Does Brett Favre really seem like the announcer type to you? He doesn't seem like one for the professional speaking business..

No..I bet he'll spend his days with beer in one hand, steering whell to his tractor in the other..:)

I think you're right, according to what I was told about his interview yesterday...

Yes, well, we've paid him quite well to play a child's game long enough. Perhaps it's time he did something useful and productive after retirement.

We pay far too much to people who are non-productive in our society. Who are the highest paid amoungst our people? Actors, Golfers, Sports stars (Football, Basket ball, etc...), and politicians. God forbid we should pay people who actually DO something usefull!

I get so tired hearing people carp and whine about the prices in the local stores around here (in Trinity County). Yet, when they discuss sports, none of that comes up. They have no problem with ball players demanding salaries in the millions. Yet the poor woman who has the store up the street hears complaints about how expensive bread, milk and beer cost. She has to drive her own truck thirty to forty miles to pick up supplies and is expected to do it for free. Go figure.

Sorry if that sounds like a rant. Still, I get sick of hearing about sports stars when the local businesspeople and pastors (the real heros in our country not to mention the vanishing family farmer) are just barely scraping by. It's like the title of a book I want to get, "This Present Insanity".

I'm not saying everything that Brett Favre has done is worth while and useful, but he and his wife donate much to charity. They also have started some charities. Just before Reggie White died, he and Brett were planning another charity.

He has given much more to our communities than football. Also, football is the talent that God gave him. He was no angel...but neither am I.

As for farmers.....my husband has worked with farmers his whole life. He has been one himself. They lead a hard life, and I give them much credit. But, I also know that farmers need to treat their farms as a business. There are many successful farmers out there. They are excellent managers. It's not a hobby, it's a business.

My little rant....:sorry:

And I agree, sports figures do make too much money. And many blow it on nonsense.

Well, he has done a couple of commercials and did have a bit part in There's Something About Mary, if I recall correctly. So who knows? Stranger things have happened. Like Ben Stiller actually having a career due to playing the same character in every movie. LOL

I stand corrected as to this particular ball player. Perhaps he has had such a long career because this is where Brett was used. As to Farmers and your husband, Seajoy, I beleive you mis-understood me. I rank Farmers, people like your husband, and other like small businesspeople as the greater heros of this country. These people are the ones who should be recieving a greater reward, and respect, than they currently are.

And I agree, sports figures do make too much money. And many blow it on nonsense.

I would agree with this statement with the possible exception of, "And many...". The fact sadly is that most of them just fritter the money away on themselves. The entertainment trade (movies, music, etc...) is even worse.

Just a minor difference of opinion. Though I still respect the differences others here may share from myself.

I have to agree with Stude. There are the exceptions to every rule, such as Brett, Boomer, Collinsworth, Munoz (yes, the last three are former Bengals. Hey, I'm from Cincy. *G*) etc.

But they are few and far between. Look at all the trouble the Bengals had this past season and the season before. I think it was 9 or 10 arrests the previous season for drunken driving, drug possession, assault...

We take some of these kids out of desperate situations and pile them with money. We don't give them any understanding on just what to DO with all that money. They didn't get it at home, at school...

And speaking of schools...wouldn't it be a wonderful thing indeed if we treated our teachers like we treat our professional sports players? If we gave them the money they deserve. I mean, after all, if it weren't for many of these teachers getting these kids started in these sports, we wouldn't HAVE these professional sports teams in the first place.

We need to give our kids better role models...and I, for one, think that our teachers, the men and women who get up everyday and work 10, 12, 14 hours a day(!!!) often using their own money to make sure the kids in their classrooms have the basic needs...tissues, pencils, paper, sometimes even food. And they do it year after year with pretty much no help from parents, the government...anyone.

Whew...there I was on the soapbox. Stude, you can have it back. :D

That's all right Kae, (LOL) I was getting a nose bleed anyway. Besides, it's too exposed a position.;) I.E. one makes far too good of a target!

Well, I've got to get to work. I got delayed today because the spring house went dry last night. Now the pump doesn't want to work.:ebil: Demon quickie machines!

LOL! Hope you all have a great day!

Did you ever see the show Dirty Jobs? THOSE are the people who should be making megabucks!!!

I would be in favor of paying public school teachers more if they actually did anything to get paid for. Public schools in this country are a joke. They are cesspools of immorailty and ignorance. The teachers and their unions have ruined education in this country. If they are so great, why do we have a growing number of kids graduating high school who cannot read or write, and why do the standardized test score of US students rank among the lowest in the world?

Where do you live?? Certainly no where I've ever been or heard of. Public schools are way over funded by the government for the level of education they provide. It costs public schools twice as much to educate a child for one year than it does a private or parochial school, and the level of education from the private and parochial schools is much higher.

All schools should be competitive. And we need vouchers!!!

There. My rant. :)

And if more parents were involved in what their kids were doing instead of trying to be their friends, perhaps maybe the teachers could actually teach instead of having to spend 95% of class disciplining the students.

Parents these days (except for the rare few) don't send their kids to school for an education, they send them there for the free babysitting. They don't get involved.

I agree. We need vouchers. Whole HEARTEDLY I agree.

I live in Cincinnati (as you well know silly! :D) and I have many many many friends who went into teaching. I see what they go through on a day to day basis. It sucks.

That may be true to an extent, but in a society that demands two incomes in a family, or a society that promotes single parenthood, it's not an easy fix.

What is needed is smaller schools and not centralized zoos, smaller classes, uniform dress, and the ability of the school to discipline. Kids get away with murder (literally) in this society. They aren't held accountable for anything because of their age. Nonsense!!

You may be right. :p I just have real issues with public schools. I've not had many good experiences with them.

I agree entirely with you Revrand. My youngest son was taught recognition reading and can't read worth beans. Vouchers would be a Godsend for the educational system in this country. Sadly, if that system were instituted, the Federal Government would horn in on what private schools are teaching. Then again, if we were giving out vouchers, the savings to the state would make it possible to refuse Federal funding for our schools thereby eliminating their leverage.

I hear that the California supreme court has decreed that all home schoolers must have the same credentials as professional teachers to teach their own children. Ah yes, isn't it great when the courts begin to legislate? Especially when the winners are the teachers union????
