  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Beatles are really on my list of best bands of all time, up there with Cream, Zeppelin etc.

One of my favourite tunes is While My Guitar Gently weeps, but I don't think there's a single song by them I downright dislike.
Would you like me to play the video for you?

I never said they didn't, I said they were coherent. Sure, they might sing a bunch of silly songs about cars/girls/surfing/school etc. that seem out of place outside of like 1962, but are they are merely quaint songs reminding us of simpler times and not fever dreams about a Surrealist nightmare world of Eggmen, Mojo filters, and girls with kaleidoscope eyes. :p
.

...

What do you expect - anyone who says 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' (LSD) isn't about experimenting with drugs should get their heads examined (not to mention written under the influence of pot and acid!) Other 'druggie' songs include "Strawberry Fields Forever," "Day Tripper," "Yellow Submarine," "Help," "Rubber Soul," "Cold Turkey," "Glass Onion," "I Am the Walrus," and "Penny Lane." (All of these were admitted to be drug songs by the Beatles.)

Ever play some of their stuff backwards?? - they were responsible for popularizing the concept of backmasking - John Lennon and their producer George Martin were responsible for them doing it! It is as clear phonetically as it is forwards - and what they had to say wasn't all innocent as the image they tried to portray themselves as. As for the backmasking, 'Revolution #9' , 'Help', 'Rain', 'Tomorrow Never Knows', 'The Inner Groove', 'Blue Jay Way', 'I Am the Walrus', etc., etc.

See here for other instances of deliberate backmasking by the Beatles - http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/opd/backwards.html

Also, if you can get your hands on the video of the song 'Revolution' when it comes to the part "and when you talk about destruction, you can count me 'out'", Lennon's voice is dubbed over to say 'out' but he is clearly mouthing 'in'!

Where they the most popular and influential rock band in history - without a doubt. And very innovative. After all, they've only sold 1.3 BILLION albums. That being said, the words of their own press officer Derek Taylor, a: "They're [the Beatles] completely anti-Christ. I mean, I am anti-Christ as well, but they're so anti-Christ they shock me which isn't an easy thing" (Saturday Evening Post, August 8-15, 1964, p. 25). In 1964 Paul McCartney stated, "We probably seem to be anti-religious… none of us believes in God." And don't forget Lennon's infamous words ""We're more popular than Jesus now. Christianity will go, it will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue about that. I'm right and will be proved right." (Newsweek, March 21, 1966).

All that being said, i grew up with the Beatles. But when i look at what they stood for (or rather against), i found it harder and harder to justify listening to them (especially their pyschedelic stuff, which i will admit to having a weakness for)

Sorry if i rained on anyone's love-in with the Beatles but the other side needed to be told! :(

^lol. You're making too much of the Paul is Dead joke. I know all of that. It shouldn't be a surprise that the Beatles did drugs, I've known that since I've started listening to them. I've listened to lots of their stuff backwards. It's amusing, but most of it means nothing.

Watched a clip of Revolution, thought it was fairly obvious that Lennon said out...

For the more popular then Jesus...it's quite obvious that that quote has been misinterpreted
From Wikipedia
"On 11 August 1966, The Beatles held a press conference in Chicago, in order to address the growing furore.[citation needed]

Lennon: I suppose if I had said television was more popular than Jesus, I would have got away with it, but I just happened to be talking to a journalist friend, and I used the words "Beatles" as a remote thing, not as what I think — as Beatles, as those other Beatles, like other people see us. I just said "they" are having more influence on kids and things than anything else, including Jesus. But I said it in that way, which is the wrong way.

Reporter: Some teenagers have repeated your statements — "I like The Beatles more than Jesus Christ." What do you think about that?

Lennon: Well, originally I pointed out that fact in reference to England. That we meant more to kids than Jesus did, or religion at that time. I wasn't knocking it or putting it down. I was just saying it as a fact, and it's true more for England than here. I'm not saying that we're better or greater, or comparing us with Jesus Christ as a person or God as a thing, or whatever it is. I just said what I said and it was wrong. Or it was taken wrong. And now it's all this.

Reporter: But are you prepared to apologise?

Lennon: I wasn't saying whatever they're saying I was saying. I'm sorry I said it really. I never meant it to be a lousy anti-religious thing. I apologise if that will make you happy. I still don't know quite what I've done. I've tried to tell you what I did do, but if you want me to apologise, if that will make you happy, then OK, I'm sorry.

The Vatican accepted his apology"

Sadly, you have yet to provide me with any information I didn't know and had seen disproved. You can try again...

Hey...

You two guys up there...

I Love This!!!

You know the line John says in I am the Walrus?

It's not even "I buried Paul". It's "cranberry sauce", and John stated that very clearly. I have the Anthology 2 (and 3) set and it's absolutely right. ;)

Just for fun:

I'm not a huge fan, but I like them. They have many good songs, a handful of great ones, and a lot of stuff that's only interesting to me in a "history of popular culture" kind of way. I have to admit I never really warmed to John Lennon.

Overall I tend to prefer George Harrison's contributions to the band. "Here Comes the Sun," "Something," "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and so on. [flameshield]Probably the only beatle who isn't overrated[/flameshield]

John was not an easy man to get along with.

I miss George. He was a sweet guy.

Both unsaved of course. Sad. :sigh:
