  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I guess "I" must just be a physical manifestation of Musical Contrarianism then huh?

Sure it is. Their lyrics actually make sense. I mean, "I am the eggman, they are the walrus, I am the eggman, koo koo Kachoob"? The entirety of "Lucy in the SKy with Diamonds"?

They even screw up the lyrics to their own song.

That's your band that's better than The Beach Boys? :p Seriously, The Beach Boys were much much better lyricists.
And the Beach Boys never sang anything ridiculous? Almost everything they sing is ridiculous...

And why am I discussing this with you...you're just a silly manifestation :p

I never said they didn't, I said they were coherent. Sure, they might sing a bunch of silly songs about cars/girls/surfing/school etc. that seem out of place outside of like 1962, but are they are merely quaint songs reminding us of simpler times and not fever dreams about a Surrealist nightmare world of Eggmen, Mojo filters, and girls with kaleidoscope eyes. :p

Hey, we soulless manifestations of abstract concepts have feelings too...

I like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. It makes me feel like I'm on drugs...or something related to what I expect drugs feel like at least. And not all the Beatle's songs are about that anyway, so you can't use that as a standard.

I'm sorry that I underestimated you manifestations...:(

I like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.
I like the way it sounds, but hate the lyrics. I prefer the likes of "While my Guitar gently weeps" and "Strawberry fields forever" and to a lesser extent "across the universe" for the bizarre stuff. It at least sounds like it means something. Lucy and I am walruss, come together, etc. just sound too "bizarre for the sake of bizarre" to me.

It makes me feel like I'm on drugs...or something related to what I expect drugs feel like at least.
I'd imagine being on drugs feels more like when I'm half-asleep and start having strange thoughts and audio hallucinations combined with being drunk. But I don't know either.

I wonder what would happen if I listened to the Beatles after pulling an all-nighter and having a few drinks?

And not all the Beatle's songs are about that anyway, so you can't use that as a standard.
Oh I never said the Beatle;s were bad or anything, merely that the Beach Boys were better.

I do love some of their stuff, just not enough of it to make me think they are better than the Beach Boys.

Anyway, it;s kind of hard to have a standard beatle's song, since they changed a lot over their career.

Once I'm legal, I'm going to have to give the Beatles a try after a couple of drinks :)

And I have given Pet Sounds a listen or two, but I didn't like it at all. The Beatles just did a lot more for music. Maybe it's just because I like experimental stuff...

(And While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Strawberry Fields, and Across the UNiverse are some of my favorites)

I've seen the LOVE show...absolutely amazing!!! I couldn't imagine myself ever enjoying Cirque du Soleil show, but this blew me away.

And my two cents...Beach Boys are classic because they caught the AMERICAN sound (not nessiarly US) and the Beatles are classic because they had the INTERNATIONAL sound.

I like a little ambiguity in my lyrics, it gives freedom to both the artist and the audience. I don't need to be told a story and I definately don't need to be told why that story is revelant.

i would say that the beach boys' Pet Sounds was better than a handful of the beatles albums... mostly older stuff. But I wouldn't put it above Sgt. Peppers or Abbey Road. And sure, the beatles started out as Brit-pop, with tons of screaming teen girl fans, but i think the Beach Boys surf tunes were equally cheese pop... although it is FUN music.

Using Walrus as an example of how beatles lyrics are incoherent weakens your argument, because everyone knows that's at one end of the spectrum. With the hundreds of beatles songs that exist, I could count the incoherent ones on my fingers. Yesterday, While My Guitar, Etc. Etc. have beautiful lyrics. They were definatley capable of great lyrics. I think one of the big reasons why the Beatles are considered the best band of all time is because of what their music meant to people around the world... especially in countries with oppressive government systems. I have friends from eastern europe who listened to the beatles in communist hungary back in the 60's and couldn't get enough of their sound... it sounded like freedom. it was revolutionary.

I also wanted to say that i think it's ok to like covers better that the originals. Some of you might think this is sacreligous but i like Rufus Wainwright's version of across the universe better than the one on Let It Be.

Agreed. But then again, I am a bigger Rufus fan than Beatle fan...he is so rediculously talented!!!

Actually that wasn't a lyric screw up...

One day in a recording session Paul DID mess up the words but once the boys heard it played back they thought it was great and re-recorded it keeping the mistake. :) They realized it happened...they just thought it was funny and decided to keep it.

Not a fan either which is odd b/c Im an old burnt out acid head but they never did anything for me.
The Guess Who, Jefferson Airplane, Cream,CCR....I like the genre but I guess they were always to clean or something, boring to me.

Really? Well, To each his own.

You do realise though that they "started it all" :)

Here's something cool.

Alternateversion of Hello Goodbye. I think they were feeling a littlebit high when they taped this :swoon:

Im not sure they started it all but if you are asking me if I respect them and their talent, then yes. It's one of those bands I wished I could like ya know what I mean? I've tried, I hear the talent, I know, it just doesn't grab me
George Harrison alone is enough to respect that band..I mean I like everything about them but not the music. sux really
then again I felt that way about the Grateful Dead years ago now they are one of my favs
who knows
