  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Proverbs 31:4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: 5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted. 6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. 7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

in light of the above (and other) Biblical verses...
when does drunkenness become a sin??? when you can longer think at your full capacities? when you're over the legal limit? when you're just a little bit tipsy? when you can wake up the next morning with a hangover? when you can't walk straight? when you can do things and not remember them later? when you can do things you wouldn't normally do?

is it ok to drink enough that you no longer worry about any of life's problems and all seems good and OK, at least for the time being?

when the bible condemns drunkenness as a sin, is it talking about getting "a little bit tipsy" every now and again, or is it talking about habitual drunkenness, drunkenness as a way of life?

i personally don't drink alchohol (for a number of reasons, none of them necessarily religious), but am still interested in people's input.

thanks in advance for all your input!

I think it takes prudence to know the difference- and there isnt a magic line in the sand that says "this is too much". If you are prone to being out of control- alcoholism or addictive type behaviors- then alcohol is probably not for you. If you have wine or beer with friends, and in moderation- I see no challenge. I think that it is like most things, that if it takes a position higher in your life than God, or your responsibilities, then it is too much. Definitely drinking to drunkenness is not a good thing. Moderation, maturity, and responsibility are necessary- but I do not believe it is a sin to drink- it is my belief that Jesus' first miracle would have been different, were it so.

Since, when you are drinking alcohol, your judgement is altered, how do you know when you've had too much??.that is why I believe drinking is "playing with fire" and has NO business in a Christians life.........thus, my post on the "Beer Bash Bingo"......when you are drunk, (and HOW do YOU determine that?..... alcohol has a way of "sneaking up on you" as you are drinking), you lose all inhibitions and are VERY open to SIN...........STAY AWAY FROM IT!!!

There is a difference between moderate drinking, and drunkenness. If you become out of control while drinking, then drinking is not for you. If you are able to moderate your drinking, then enjoy this blessing to you and your health.

Jesus said that it was sin to even look at a girl with lust (desire to pocess) and that it was the same as doing it ... You know "it" ...

So if you apply the same comon sense to alcohol it's a sin to even look at some of these beer commercials they have on T.V. especially the ones with women ... lol :holy:

But seriously why take a chance ... Say "No" let your peers see Jesus in you ... maybe you can handle a beer or two, but I think alcohol gets into your blood stream and thats where the Holy Spirit lives, right?

Jesus lives in our hearts via the power of the Holy Spirit ... When you tell the devil "No" he don't like it ... What do you think Jesus likes when you tell Him, "No"

A Pharisaic legalist once asked me how many beers would it take to get me drunk. I didn't know, so he said, how about 6. If I drink one beer then I am 1/6 drunk.

That's crap! Legalism!

Drunkenness is excess, not 1/6. The Bible does not say what is excess. It gives no legalistic rule about how much is too much. But oh, we love to IMPOSE our idiotic Pharisaic religion on people, which we arrogantly name Christianity!

It is NOT even a Christian issue to drink or not. It is a personal choice. Either way, teetotaling or moderation is just fine and dandy, but don't you dare say that the only legitimate Christian choice is total abstinence. Crap! Nonsense! What verse in the Bible did you get that from?

Why do bigoted teetotalers, those who want to impose their choice as a religion, ignore those Bible verse which praise wine? If used moderately, alcohol was designed by God to be a blessing in the body of a normally healthy person. It cheers God and men (Judges 9:13), gladdens the heart (Psalms 104:15), gladdens life (Exodus 10:19), makes the heart rejoice (Zechariah 10:7), cheers up those who are depressed (Proverbs 31:6). Wine is to be imbibed with a cheerful heart (Ecclesiastes 9:7). It makes life merry (Ecclesiastes 10:19).

I used to believe such legalists and their dumb Pharisaic rules about alcohol, gambling, dancing, card playing, etc. Now, I've grown up and am glad for my Christian freedom. Now I can concentrate on REAL Christianity, what Christ taught, instead of some stupid lists of do's and don'ts.

Did Jesus ever sin? Did Jesus drink wine? Did Jesus turn water to wine? If Jesus drank wine and drinking is a sin are you then saying that Jesus sinned?
