  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Proverbs 31:4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: 5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted. 6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. 7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

in light of the above (and other) Biblical verses...
when does drunkenness become a sin??? when you can longer think at your full capacities? when you're over the legal limit? when you're just a little bit tipsy? when you can wake up the next morning with a hangover? when you can't walk straight? when you can do things and not remember them later? when you can do things you wouldn't normally do?

is it ok to drink enough that you no longer worry about any of life's problems and all seems good and OK, at least for the time being?

when the bible condemns drunkenness as a sin, is it talking about getting "a little bit tipsy" every now and again, or is it talking about habitual drunkenness, drunkenness as a way of life?

i personally don't drink alchohol (for a number of reasons, none of them necessarily religious), but am still interested in people's input.

thanks in advance for all your input!
I took a drug and alcohol class in college and it was very interesting. I found out that for someone who is about 180 pounds it would take about 5 beers to get over the legal limit on alcohol level. A shot of whiskey and a glass of wine are about the same as a bottle of beer if I recall right.
I chose not to drink, though i don't think it would be wrong to drink a little. It is a depressant though and slows motor skills and reflexes and impairs judgment. I don't need my judgment effected any more than it already normally is!
I also think with so many other choices besides alcoholic drinks, we should be able to find something else that would be just as good for us.

There are other factors that are in play also. Did the person eat before drinking, how much did they eat, what did they eat, etc.

I agree that we have so many other choices.
