  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Pastor Jack Hibbs urges Christians nationwide to join Tennessee's month of prayer, fasting

A prominent megachurch pastor is calling on all Americans to follow in the footsteps of the state of Tennessee by participating in a month of prayer and fasting.

During a sermon delivered on Sunday at the California-based megachurch Calvary Chapel Chino Hills, Pastor Jack Hibbs shared with the congregation that Tennessee's Republican Gov. Bill Lee had approved a resolution urging the state's residents to pray for the state and the nation during the month of July, and to “seek God’s hand of mercy [and] healing on Tennessee.”

Hibbs then shared a screenshot of a LifeSite news article reporting that Lee had signed the bill calling for 30 days of prayer and fasting beginning July 1.

Thoughts from the Book of Job

I just got done reading (listening) through the book of Job. I have some thoughts and wanted to get the feedback of others. I know there is another thread right now on Job here, but I didn't want to hijack the direction taken there.

Here is my take on Job.
  • Job's understanding of the world is that:
    • God is all powerful, and that everything that happens is directly in accordance to God's wishes.
    • God rewards the good and punishes the evil
    • That he, Job, has lived a good life and is therefore deserving of reward.
  • Job is then struck by disaster and loss, and he is confronted with making sense of everything. His world model doesn't compute, the logic of his understanding doesn't fit.
  • Job's friends try to solve the problem by accusing him of wrong doing.
  • Job tries to solve the problem by blaming God for being unjust.
  • We, the audience, have extra knowledge that Job's suffering took place because of a conflict initiated by Satan.
  • In the end, God shows up and demonstrates that the universe is a complicated place and Job has very little understanding of it. Job acknowledges his ignorance and God forgives him.
Question:
  • Job is often portrayed as righteous because he suffered "unjust" misery and kept his faith in God. But wasn't he wrong when he says "The arrows of the Almighty are in me, my spirit drinks in their poison; God’s terrors are marshaled against me." (Job 6:4)? Job thought that God was the only actor in the scene. "When a land falls into the hands of the wicked, he blindfolds its judges. If it is not he, then who is it?"

To serve his country, Donald Trump should leave the race

Biden had a horrible night Thursday. But the debate about the debate is misplaced. The only person who should withdraw from the race is Trump.

"Trump told more than 30 lies during the debate to go with the more than 30,000 mistruths told during his four years as president. He dodged the CNN moderators’ questions, took no responsibility for his actions, and blamed others, mainly Biden, for everything that is wrong in the world."

I concur.

New York Priest Celebrates ‘Pride Mass’ Outside of Gay Monument — on LGBT Flag

Okay so this priest is a member of the Paulists which makes this stunt less surprising. My beef here, besides the obvious, is where is Dolan in all of this? I feel like time and again these sacrileges are happening right under his nose and, just like this article says below, the archdiocese claims it had no idea that was happening. Just like the trans funeral in St Patrick's, just like the Sabrina Carpenter music video shot inside church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Ok, that last one happened in Brooklyn but that's still a suffragan diocese to the metropolitan Archdiocese of New York, so Dolan still has some responsibility there.

Where is he in all this? It feels like all he does are these promotional appearances like photo ops for NYE with the Rockettes or something. He needs to take a hard line, be more outspoken and proactive against sacrilege and blasphemy. After all, the Archdiocese is supposed to be his house, he should take better care of it. Stop being soft on all these proverbial marauders.

My prayers as a kid

Ive been looking back at alot of the things I used to do as a kid and am realizing that alot of them weren't proper. For example, I used to have a specific prayer I had to pray, and it wouldnt be answered till I prayed it perfectly. That...that doesnt sound like God...at the time I didnt know better but now im like...hm...don't see this in the bible. Anyone want to weigh in?

Righteous Judgment III: Zion's Future King, from Isaiah

Isaiah 1:27 Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.

Isaiah 5:
7 For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant:
and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.

16 But the Lord of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness.

Isaiah 9:7 Of the increase of His government and peace no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and righteousness from that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Isaiah 32:
15 Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field,
and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.
16 Then judgment shall dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness remain in the fruitful field.
17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and
assurance for ever.

Isaiah 33:

5 The Lord is exalted; for he dwells on high: he has filled Zion with judgment and righteousness.
6 And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation:
the fear of the Lord is his treasure.

14 The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites.
Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?
15 He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions,
that shakes his hands from holding bribes, that stops his ears from hearing of blood,
and shuts his eyes from seeing evil;
16 He shall dwell on high: his place of defense shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him;
his waters shall be sure.
17 Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty: they shall behold the land that is very far off.

Are we so supposed to pray for one another?

I don't know if this is the right place to post. But I've been working with this Christian at my job in the beginning we were getting to know each other. I found out he was a Christian so as we talked further. I told him could he pray for me so he prayed with me about better opportunities that was about 2 years ago.

So recently I asked him hey can you pray for me I need a new job and he said you can't tell me that. So not to long ago I got a job interview and I ask him if he could pray that my job interview goes well. He said you can't tell me about interviews-- that puts him in a weird spot. How so? I'm just asking for prayer our job has no policy against discussing interviews for other jobs because people quit leave all the time. I asked why are you going to get in trouble with the boss he said no

What is the Mark of the Beast ?

The Mark of the Beast
And the second beast required all people small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark— the name of the beast or the number of its name. Here is a call for wisdom: Let the one who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and that number is 666.…

image_2024-06-29_223003617.png

What is this Mark 666 the number of a man ?

Is it a chip ?
Is it a mobile phone ?
Is it a DNA change i.e the Blood ?

DNA is composed of 6 protons, 6 electrons and 6 neutrons, which equates to 666.

Or is it something spiritual ?

About this rating

Note: On April 29, 2024, Snopes changed the rating of this fact check from "Unproven" to "True" based on testimony provided by Ashley Biden. In an April 8 letter to a New York judge requesting jail time for one of the two people convicted of stealing her diary, Biden wrote, "I will forever have to deal with the fact that my personal journal can be viewed online."

Previous versions of this fact check noted "strong evidence" that the diary existed, but argued that no source had authenticated the contents of the pages published online, writing that "the authenticity of photographs purported to be from a diary is a separate question from the factual existence of a diary."

Are you an expert on the Eucharist? Take this quiz

We cannot keep the precious gift of the Eucharist to ourselves! In his apostolic exhortation Sacramentum Caritatis (“The Sacrament of Charity”), Pope Benedict XVI writes, “The love that we celebrate in the sacrament is not something we can keep to ourselves. By its very nature it demands to be shared with all. What the world needs is God’s love; it needs to encounter Christ and to believe in him.” This summer, find out how prepared (or not) you are to talk about the Eucharist.

What is behind the theology of the Sacred Heart?

Behold this Heart which has so loved men that it has spared nothing, even to exhausting and consuming itself, in order to testify its love. In return, I receive from the greater part only ingratitude, by their irreverence and sacrilege, and by the coldness and contempt they have for Me in this sacrament of love… It is for this reason I ask thee … to honor My Heart … making reparation for the indignity that it has received.”

The devotion to the Sacred Heart, which spread throughout the Church from the 17th century to the present day, began with these words spoken to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. The words accompanied a revelation: the Lord unveiled his Sacred Heart to the visionary. But why the heart? Why does beholding his heart matter? And what does our decision in response to his heart mean? These are three crucial questions about the Sacred Heart of Jesus which may only be answered theologically.

Are Dungeons and Dragons, Pokemon, etc., demonic?

The game itself is not demonic, but it could be, depending on how you treat it. If you don't feel right about it, don't play it. However, you cannot insist on other Christians not to play it.

The game does not bother my conscience, I still don't do it because I have better things to do. But then I don't play Monopoly either :)

If you like it, then play it as a form of entertainment.

Do you think Dungeons and Dragons, etc., is Satanic?

I don't think so. To some obsessive players, it could be.

Is it a sin to play video games?

No, not generally speaking. It depends on the game and the gamer. James 4:

17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.
If it bothers your conscience, then it is a sin.

Is it a good idea to constantly be in the Word without anything else?

It is good to have some entertainment as well. Have self-control and balance your time. There is no need to be extreme.

Paul warned in 2 Tim 2:

22 So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. 23 Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels.
As an adult, you should not be passionate about video games. However, Paul warned specifically against youthful quarrelsome behaviors, not about video games.

Those things can become sin if they overwhelm your life, but as an occasional leisure activity, I've never seen a problem with them.
Right, that's a balanced interpretation.

Vatican fireworks: A 500-year-old tradition for the solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul

For the past 500 years, the Vatican has celebrated the solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul with a bang with a spectacular fireworks show influenced by Michelangelo and Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

While many associate fireworks with the Fourth of July, the Vatican had already been celebrating this week with fireworks for nearly 300 years at the time when Americans were signing the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Each year on June 29, fireworks are launched from atop Castel Sant’Angelo, the papal fortress originally commissioned by Roman Emperor Hadrian, in celebration of the co-patron saints of Rome, St. Peter and St. Paul.

The fireworks show, called “The Girandola,” has captured the imagination of many artists over the centuries whose sketches and paintings illustrate the event with more pizzazz than the myriad of iPhone photos of fireworks today.

The Work of Your Hands

“I bow down toward your holy temple
and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness,
for you have exalted above all things
your name and your word.
On the day I called, you answered me;
my strength of soul you increased.” (Psalms 138:2-3 ESV)
“Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
you preserve my life;
you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
and your right hand delivers me.
The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me;
your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.
Do not forsake the work of your hands.” (Psalms 138:7-8 ESV)

If we are of genuine faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of our lives, and so we have been crucified with Christ in death to sin, and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin, but as slaves to God and to his righteousness, then we will have the same enemies as God has. And these enemies could well be those who profess faith in Jesus Christ. They could even be pastors of church congregations. But they oppose the Lord and his commands by how they conduct their own lives.

For those who walk in sin, and according to the flesh, and not according to the Spirit, and not in holiness and in righteousness and in obedience to our Lord, in practice, walk as enemies of God. Even if they give lip service to the Lord, if sin is what they practice, and not righteousness, and not obedience to God, then they are enemies of God, and they will also be our enemies if we are, indeed, following Jesus Christ with our lives wholeheartedly. For we will be an offense to them, because we take God and his word to heart.

Especially since we live in a day and age when the Word of God is being altered and diluted to suit the sinful desires of human flesh, and when so many pastors of church congregations are diluting the gospel of our salvation in order to tickle itching ears and to make the gospel message more agreeable to the ungodly, if we still hold to the truths of the Scriptures and to the gospel that Jesus Christ and his NT apostles taught, we should expect to be opposed even by others professing faith in the Lord Jesus.

And if we think about it, who were Jesus’ strongest opponents when he lived on the earth? They were not the people out in the world who made no professions of faith in God, but they were his fellow Jews, his neighbors, some of his family members, and the religious rulers and people of influence in the temple of God and in the synagogues. They are the ones who hated him and wanted him dead because of the things that he did and said. And so they harassed him at every turn until they finally arranged for his death.

So, it should not surprise us if we are opposed and ridiculed and laughed at and mocked for our walks of faith by others who call themselves Christians. And Jesus said that if we follow him with our lives that even our family members will be against us, though not necessarily all of them. But we should expect to be opposed and rejected and even mistreated by the members of our own birth families if we take God’s word to heart and if we follow the Lord in doing what he says that we are all to be doing.

For we live in a day and time when so many are being taught a gospel message which makes no requirements for self-denial and for death to sin and for walks of obedience to our Lord’s commands in righteous living. So many are being taught that they can just acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and now heaven is guaranteed them, and it can’t be taken away from them, but regardless of how they live. And some are even taught that they don’t have to repent of their sins nor obey our Lord’s commands.

So, if we are remaining faithful to the teachings of Christ and of his NT apostles, especially with regard to what they taught was the gospel of our salvation, then Satan is definitely going to be after us to try to bring us down, and he will use other humans to do his dirty work to try to trip us up and to trap us or to try to discredit us and/or to turn others against us, because he wants us to fail, and he wants to silence us. So we need to hold fast to Jesus and trust him to carry us through it all.

Songs in the Night

An Original Work / December 18, 2013

“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.” Acts 16:25 NIV ‘84

Lord, I praise You forevermore.
You, my Savior, I now adore.
Hope in heaven awaiting me,
Because You died at Calvary.

I have been forgiven,
And I’m bound for heaven.
Jesus set me free from
All my sin, I say.
I will praise Him always!

Lord, I love You for all You’ve done:
Overcame death, my vict’ry won!
Jesus saved me, and now I’m free!
I rejoice in His love for me.

I will walk in vict’ry!
My sin is but hist’ry!
I am free to please Him
With my life today.
I will love Him always!

Lord, I thank You for giving me
A new life bought at Calvary.
Loving Jesus, I meet with Him.
Tender mercies now flow within.

Lord, I am so thankful;
Through my Lord, I’m able
To sit at His table;
Fellowship with Him.
I will thank Him always!

Peter the Apostle and Paul, the teacher of the Gentiles

St. Peter was a fisherman. Fishing nets and tilapia were his daily reality. Born without distinction in a backwater of the Roman Empire, he presumably would have lived and died in total obscurity had not Our Lord called him to a higher ministry. The green hills of Galilee might have been his entire world.

St. Paul was not a fisherman. He was a man of education and status who was quite possibly being groomed for an authoritative office or distinguished profession. Some speculate that he may have been a relative of Herod the Great. Whether or not that is true, the New Testament clearly presents him as a Roman citizen, well versed in law and philosophy. He spoke at least three languages (Greek, Hebrew, and Latin) and was actively involved in political affairs in Jerusalem at the time of his conversion. We don’t know as much as we might like about his lineage and early life, but the broader picture is reasonably clear. St. Paul was brilliant and a member of the Jewish elite.

Both of these men were titans. They were the movers and shakers of the apostolic age. One was provincial and the other thoroughly cosmopolitan. One lived his early life in poverty, while the other was born to privilege. On their joint feast day, it’s interesting to reflect on this remarkable pairing. God evidently needed both of these men to establish Christianity in the ancient world. Why was this necessary? What did each bring to the table?

Though St. Peter’s story is in one way quite extraordinary, it illustrates a principle that we see affirmed time and again throughout the Bible: “Exaltavit humiles.” God delights in exalting the humble and frustrating the wisdom of the wise.

Christian Marriages through Time: A Brief Historical Review

Often when lecturing on women and Scripture, I’m asked: “Doesn’t the Bible teach different roles for husbands and wives?” My response is simple: “Regardless of gender, our calling as Christians is to imitate Christ.”1 Scripture advocates not for biblical womanhood or manhood but biblical Christhood—a truth continually obscured and distorted by forces inside and outside the church. To restore our vision, let’s take a quick flight over history to observe how couples have transcended cultural expectations in following Christ.

The Early Church

Two couples feature prominently in the New Testament. Both were Paul’s closest coworkers.

Paul referred to Priscilla and Aquila more than anyone else, except Timothy. They first worked as tentmakers in Corinth. Then Paul, Priscilla, and Aquila moved to Ephesus, where Priscilla and Aquila planted a church in their home. Here they taught Apollos, a gifted teacher, with Priscilla in the lead (Acts 18:26). Cited ahead of her husband in four of six references,2 the couple transcended gender expectations as Priscilla taught a prominent leader in the church in their home. Later, both risked their necks for Paul equally, and all the churches honored their courage (Rom. 16:3–4).3

Like Priscilla and Aquila, Junia and her husband, Andronicus, were Paul’s coworkers and also prominent apostles. Their marriage conformed not to cultural expectations but to their calling in Christ, even as it landed them in prison (Rom. 16:7).

Captivated by Christ and called to service, both of these early church couples show rather than tell how their marriage conformed not to patriarchal culture but to their calling as Christian leaders.

What is a lukewarm Christian?

Revelation 3:

16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
Jesus addressed the nominal Christians. It was a warning. Take heed. Get serious. The context points to the Church in Sardis (Revelation 3:1). I do not have an operational definition of lukewarm. I leave it to the conscience of the individual believers to decide for themselves whether they are lukewarm Christians or not.

Luke 12:

47“The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.
That's one kind of lukewarm Christian.

48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows.
That's another.

From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
Lukewarm Christians will be punished, some more and some less. Get busy and active in the will of God.

See How not to be lukewarm.

Baptist evangelist tied down with ropes, killed by Muslim extremists in Uganda

NAIROBI, Kenya — An evangelist who had received death threats from Muslim extremists was killed after leading Muslims and others to Christ in eastern Uganda, sources said.

The body of evangelist Richard Malinga was found in the evening at Kayete Swamp in Akisim A village, Butebo District after he had texted his pastor that he was surrounded by Muslims, sources said. He was 36.

A Baptist church in Pallisa District had sent him to visit homes and share the Gospel, his pastor said. He left his hometown in Pallisa District the morning of June 17 to share about Christ in Butebo District. Several people put their faith in Christ, including some radical Muslims, said his church’s senior pastor.

Preach Jesus, not your presidential candidate

While political pundits do their jobs in analyzing the presidential debate, I’ll do my job as a spiritual leader and encourage us to keep our priorities straight. In short, as I posted earlier this year, preach Jesus and vote for your presidential candidate of choice, based on scriptural principles. But do not preach your candidate. To do so is to defile your witness.

All too often, we become better known for the candidate we support than the Lord we serve, declaring our allegiance to a party or a person far more passionately than we declare our allegiance to the Savior. And to what end? For what purpose?

Better that we keep our priorities straight and our focus clear, being careful not to allow anything to taint our testimony for our Lord. And then, as responsible citizens, we get involved in the political process.

For all of us, this should mean informed voting. For some, it will also mean donating to candidates. Or raising awareness about issues. Or working to get out the vote. Or even running for office. Let everyone find their place.

But let none of us get so caught up with the elections that we allow our social media pages or spheres of influence to become partisan political cesspools, filled with ugly attacks, mocking memes, and nasty rhetoric. And all this side by side with our favorite Scripture of the day!
