  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trump Lawyers Claimed “No Plans” for Deportation Flights as Convoy Headed to Airport

Ensign said he understood there would be no flights Friday night and that he was “not aware of any plans” for flights on Saturday, but that the Department of Homeland Security reserved the right to conduct flights on Saturday.

At the same time, the ICE buses were nearing their approach to the airport exit.

Utah’s school voucher program is unconstitutional, judge rules; it is not 'open' to all students since private schools can exclude disabled, heathens

Utah’s school voucher program is unconstitutional, judge rules

A Utah judge sided with the state’s largest teachers’ union Friday, striking down the “Utah Fits All” school voucher program. Gov. Spencer Cox said the state will appeal.

At the heart of the judge’s ruling is Article X of the Utah Constitution, which requires the state to maintain a public education system that is both “free and open to all children.”

The judge ruled that while participating in Utah Fits All is “free,” it is not “open.”

“As required by the Utah Constitution, public schools must allow all resident students to enroll and may not discriminate against them,” the ruling states. “In stark contrast, every school participating in the Program has some form of an application process, which may include assessments, interviews, or tests to determine if the student is the right ‘fit.’”

Private schools and other providers participating in Utah Fits All aren’t required to serve students with disabilities and can deny admission based on factors like gender, religion or income, the ruling states.

The concept of Logos from Heraclitus to John

In the 5th century BCE, Heraclitus used the word Logos to describe the rational principle that governed the universe, a kind of cosmic order or divine reason. Later philosophers, such as the Stoics, expanded on this idea, viewing the Logos as the animating force behind creation, the source of all coherence and meaning in the world. For them, the Logos was impersonal and abstract, not a personal being.

Around the time of Chirst, Philo of Alexandria, a Hellenistic Jewish philosopher, developed a sophisticated theology of the Logos, blending Jewish scripture with Greek philosophy. The Logos was God’s intermediary between the transcendent, unknowable Creator and the material world. The Logos was the instrument through which God fashioned the universe (On the Creation 20–25). The Logos was the High Priest who interceded for humanity before God (On Dreams 1.215). The Logos was the firstborn Son of God (On Agricultura 51). Philo’s Logos was semi-personified, more than an abstract principle but less than a distinct person, unlike the later Christian view of the Trinity.

John borrowed some of Philo's ideas, 1:

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4In him was life,a and the life was the light of men.
Strong's Greek: 3056. λόγος (logos) — 331 Occurrences

It was a common word that had a wide range of dictionary meanings. However, John used it in a technical and philosophical sense. That's why ESV translated it with a capital W.

Thayer's Greek Lexicon:

reason, the mental faculty of thinking, meditating, reasoning, calculating, etc.
BDAG:
① a communication whereby the mind finds expression, word
② computation, reckoning
③ the independent personified expression of God, the Logos. Our lit. shows traces of a way of thinking that was widespread in contemporary syncretism, as well as in Jewish wisdom lit. and Philo, the most prominent feature of which is the concept of the Logos, the independent, personified ‘Word’ (of God)

BDAG③ lists plenty of extra-biblical writings about it, including Philo.

Is there evidence that "the Word" in John 1 would have been expected to be a personal being?

Yes. Jn 1:

14 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Sond from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John took an extra step beyond Philo. He declared the Logos took on flesh as a human being.

Greek philosophers used the term Logos as an abstract concept. Philo made it semi-concrete. John quated the concept to the person of Jesus.

Logos is a multifaceted concept, spanning language, reason, divine principle, and structured thought. The English word "logic" is derived from the Greek word "logos."

"Happy Easter to ALL" from Trump

"Happy Easter to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics who are fighting and scheming so hard to bring Murderers, Drug Lords, Dangerous Prisoners, the Mentally Insane, and well known MS-13 Gang Members and Wife Beaters, back into our Country. Happy Easter also to the WEAK and INEFFECTIVE Judges and Law Enforcement Officials who are allowing this sinister attack on our Nation to continue, an attack so violent that it will never be forgotten! Sleepy Joe Biden purposefully allowed Millions of CRIMINALS to enter our Country, totally unvetted and unchecked, through an Open Borders Policy that will go down in history as the single most calamitous act ever perpetrated upon America. He was, by far, our WORST and most Incompetent President, a man who had absolutely no idea what he was doing -- But to him, and to the person that ran and manipulated the Auto Pen (perhaps our REAL President!), and to all of the people who CHEATED in the 2020 Presidential Election in order to get this highly destructive Moron Elected, I wish you, with great love, sincerity, and affection, a very Happy Easter!!!"

A response to yet another endless theological debate...

When "theology" is reduced to merely "The study of...", we outta here!

Let none of us, me included, lose sight of the fact that our relationship is with the Person of Jesus Christ. He is the Author of Scripture and had a Word for some who had their noses so deep in wrangling over said Scripture - that they failed to recognize and fellowship with the One Who fulfills the law - Grace Himself.

In regards to that, know when to continue to engage, and when to walk away - even allowing the other guy to have the last word. A good clue is when both sides are lobbing Scripture at each other, and neither is listening, eh?

None of us really have the last word anyway.

Only One does - The Amen!

Author says Naval Academy canceled his lecture over reference to books removed from library

BALTIMORE — The Naval Academy canceled a speech by author and podcaster Ryan Holiday after he declined a request not to reference 381 books and literary works removed from its library as part of a review of diversity, equity and inclusion materials, according to an opinion piece he authored for The New York Times.

['We're not censoring anything, and we'll censor anyone who says we are.']

Holiday, who has hosted a series of lectures on the virtues of Stoicism to midshipmen for the past four years, was scheduled to speak to the sophomore class on the theme of wisdom on April 14.

“As an author, I believe deeply in the power of books,” Holiday wrote in The Times. “As a bookstore owner in Texas, I have spoken up about book banning many times already. More important was the topic of my address: the virtue of wisdom.

“As I explained repeatedly to my hosts, I had no interest in embarrassing anyone or discussing politics directly. I understand the immense pressures they are under, especially the military employees, and I did not want to cause them trouble. I did, however, feel it was essential to make the point that the pursuit of wisdom is impossible without engaging with (and challenging) uncomfortable ideas.”

Easter Poem I wrote

THE SACRIFICE
This is the old story that will never grow dull.
For ‘twas there in Jerusalem on a hill called “The Skull”.
The Creator of all, hung crucified, - dieing,
While His Mother stood by, helpless, - crying.

O how could it happen, O how could this be?
O why was He there, nailed to that tree?
Three years midst this people He’d openly walked.
From healing, doing good, He never baulked.

He’d healed the sick and raised the dead,
Opened blind eyes and the hungry He’d fed.
But mankind just wants to do their own thing
And lovingly to their sins will cling.

Now days before He’d been welcomed as King
But leaders, afraid - loss of power would bring.
So they plotted His death, for they loved their power.
Then arranged with Judas to find the right hour.

With disciples at Passover to Jerusalem Christ went.
Where a long day of celebration and teaching was spent.
A beautiful Passover day made complete,
When Jesus washed the disciples' feet.

Then at twilight with Disciples, to Gethsemane went,
Where Jesus much time in deep prayer spent.
Near midnight it was that Judas drew near,
Leading a mob with sword and with spear.

Bound and before the High priests’ He was taken,
Mocked, struck and accused with false accusation.
On the murder of Jesus their hearts were bent.
Then in early morning to Pilate they went.

Many false accusations to Pilate they made.
But Pilate could see through their false charade.
“No fault I find in this man” he said.
But the crowd just wanted Jesus dead.

Pilate would release Him, but a tumult did fear,
Could put an end to his great career.
And the crowd cried out louder “crucify him”,
“For this man before you, He claims to be King”.

Now Pilate you see he feared the mob,
For he could easily just, lose his job.
So then without any further delaying,
He washed his hands before them saying,

“Innocent I am of this just mans blood”, he said
So now you just do, what you will, instead.
“His blood on us and our children be”.
The crowd cried out in response you see,
And that curse hangs over them to this day.
So we have to be careful what we say.

He then with self-preservation driven,
To the soldiers, Jesus then was given.
And having made our Lord to strip,
They flogged Him, with a Roman Whip.

A scarlet robe on Him did place.
They spat on Him and struck His face.
A crown of inch long thorns was made,
And on His head it then was laid.

“Hail King of the Jews” they mockingly said,
Then struck with a rod driving deep in his head,
Those inch long thorns, with pain He was rent,
This done to He that with love was sent.

And then without any further delay,
Near mid-day it was and they lead Him away.
A torturous walk midst mocking and shame,
Bearing His cross and in great pain.

By many of His followers now forsaken,
To Calvary’s “Skull Hill” he then was taken.
A crowd then gathered round about Him,
As to that cross the soldiers bound Him.

Through his hands and feet they hammered those nails,
While some onlookers mocked and others wailed.
Then to the Father Jesus called out,
“Father forgive them” He cried out,
“For they know not what they do” He said,
Those soldiers were acting, you see, in our staid.

Our sins it was which held Him there,
All our punishment He did bare.
But it only applies when we give our heart,
To He who was always there from the start.

He paid the price of our redemption,
But we must serve Him in faith and mention,
To all who will listen and by faith accept,
That Jesus our God has paid the debt.

Three days and three nights in the tomb He lay,
Then God raised Him up on early Sunday.
A type of the raising of all who believe.
So friend please now, will you Jesus receive.

John 3:14-18 NKJV
14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have eternal life.
16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

The Living Hope of the Resurrection!

1745135965572.png

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
(1 Peter 1:3-5)

Why are only certain things in the catechism excused under the "mental illness" umbrella

Self-harm is a very sensitive topic. In the catechism, the writers mention that God's mercy potentially lifts the weight off those who are driven down the path to it by certain conditions of the mind. I was reading about it last week with someone (for clarification, that someone is a Catholic and I am a different denomination).

The person I was reading it with asked why the "conditions of the mind" part is only used as a way out in that particular topic. I asked what they meant, and they gave the example of lust. Lust can come in forms that one might say challenge our closeness to God. They then mentioned that "conditions of the mind" might sadly curse an individual to find compatibility impossible, such as people coming back from war who almost inherently cannot rest their mind on a single love and are internally clinically wandering, an example of the vast web certain conditions are and how they might play out. I didn't know what to answer. Why the reservations?

Introduction

Hi everyone I am new here and will have to get used to how everything works. First I want to say thank you C.F. for welcoming me on to this site. I am very impressed with the rules and standards this site upholds. God Bless all who have part in the running of it. - Now a bit about myself; I am 92 yrs old and live in a suburb of Perth West Australia. I have been a Christian since I was 18. I was a staunch atheist/evolutionist before that. I remember well the events of the day Sept. 22 1951 when I was converted. I have been a member of and served in 3 different denominations but found apostasy creeping into all of them but best I do not go into details of that. So, I am now non-denominational and just prefer to regard myself as Christian. I look forward to periodically interacting with people on this site. Again, Thanks for having me.

Why conspiracies are so popular — and what we can do to stop them

Even in the face of overwhelming evidence, false narratives can be incredibly sticky. Many people insist that the earth is flat, that childhood vaccines cause autism, or that climate change is a hoax, despite ample scientific evidence to the contrary.

“Stories are very powerful,” said Timothy Tangherlini, a UC Berkeley professor in the Department of Scandinavian and the School of Information. “We’re much more comfortable with hearing stories that confirm our beliefs than ones that challenge them.”

Tangherlini sees narratives like these, and the many other conspiracies that are rife in today’s internet culture, as a type of modern-day folklore. As a computational folklorist, he uses AI tools to study how social media networks have accelerated the spread of conspiracies and false beliefs, and what, if anything, we can do to slow them down.

Following an election cycle dominated by conspiracies and hoaxes — from elites controlling the path of hurricanes, to 20 million missing votes for Kamala Harris and immigrants eating people’s pets — Tangherlini’s work is more relevant than ever. Berkeley Newsspoke with Tangherlini about why conspiratorial thinking has flourished in recent years and how we might spread stories of inclusion and truth that are powerful enough to stem the tide of false belief.

No hope, please pray

Shalom

Could you please pray for our brother Alexander?

He has served the Lord Jesus internationally for many years.

Unfortunately, he has an unknown eye disease that is not (yet) officially recognized and is almost blind.

As a result, he cannot work and lives on unemployment benefits and is also in constant poverty.

He numbs himself with cannabis and alcohol and spends more time with people who are not good for him than with brothers and sisters, and he is without hope.

His wish is to finally be taken "seriously."

"Even though I walk through the valley of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me." Psalm 23:4

Thank you for your prayers!

May the Lord bless you abundantly (Luke 6:38, Job 42:10) and bless Israel in Jesus' name. Amen!

Soli Deo Gloria

PS And I pray that the Lord will send out harvesters into his harvest (Matthew 9:38).

We are deporting legal Afghan Christians refugees who fled torture for their faith

The administration has emailed Afghans who entered the US legally (with extensive vetting) with protected status, and told them they need to self deport or face law enforcement actions. This includes Afghans who aided US soldiers and will be killed if they return home, as well as Christians who have been tortured by the Taliban and will probably return to the same.

If I were one of these folks, I would be worried about being sent to El Salvador.

Meanwhile, the white house released a Holy Week message which includes
We pray that America will remain a beacon of faith, hope, and freedom for the entire world,
so I guess that makes it all okay.

Forgiving the unrepentant?

We know that we are to forgive others, even if they sin against you 7 times in a day and 7 times in a day say I repent (for the same sin even) according to Luke 17:4.
This makes sense even if they keep wronging you afterward if they did recognize that they were at fault and did wrong, and apologize, okay so they fail at keeping their repentance, but if they can repent to begin with their heart is not hardened.

But what if they don't repent? What if they cannot admit fault, and harden their heart declaring that they were right to wrong you? Not even so much as a "my bad"? God does not forgive the unrepentant as far as I'm aware, is He expecting us to forgive people He doesn't forgive? Are we expected to be more forgiving than God Himself?

A tangent of this question comes also in light of people who profess faith+works salvation, that if a Christian sins they lose their salvation, etc. Jesus commands us to forgive someone of the same sin 7 times in a day (with the number 7 being representation of completeness, it's possible if not very likely Jesus expects us to forgive a repentant sinner over and over no matter how many times in a day they fail, without a limit)

The hardening of the heart to reject God's Messiah is as I've heard connected to the unforgivable sin, to blaspheme the Holy Spirit and deny His conviction

I find it incredibly easy to forgive someone who apologizes, it becomes "water under the bridge" just like that.
But I find it near impossible to forgive someone who mocks and scoffs and doubles down on offense without even admission that they've done anything wrong, often blaming you for what they did.

are we to forgive them when they don't even ask to be forgiven?

Member of Minnesota Governor Tim-Walzs administration allegedly caused 20k in damage while vandalizing Teslas

Vandals nationwide have set fire and destroyed Tesla cars, dealerships and charging stations in the weeks following Trump’s inauguration.
“I think a great wrong is being done to the people of Tesla and to our customers,” the DOGE chief told Fox News “Special Report” host Bret Baier last month.
“I mean, Tesla’s a peaceful company that has made great cars, great products — that’s all it’s done,” the 53-year-old argued.

I suppose he'll receive a fine. Walz should fire him.

Salvadoran fugitive convicted in deadly attack of Maryland hiker

BEL AIR, Md. (AP) — A fugitive from El Salvador was convicted Monday in the 2023 slaying of a Maryland woman who was attacked while exercising on a popular hiking trail northeast of Baltimore.

Prosecutors alleged that Victor Martinez-Hernandez, 24, was carrying out a planned attack when he grabbed Rachel Morin off the trail, bashed her head against nearby rocks, raped her and concealed her body in a drainage culvert. Their case hinged on DNA evidence connecting him to the crime.

A jury found Martinez-Hernandez guilty of first-degree murder and first-degree rape, among other offenses, according to Randolph Rice, an attorney representing Morin’s relatives.

“The Morin family is incredibly relieved that justice was served today,” Rice said in a statement.

Martinez-Hernandez was accused of entering the United States illegally after allegedly killing another woman in his home country. Authorities also linked him to a 2023 home invasion in Los Angeles.
These people have got to go.

The degradation of "spirituality"

We see it a great deal on this forum. Spirituality gets appropriated to support political biases.

And yet, what else can we do? For spirituality manifests itself in our daily lives, decisions and biases. We seek to apply God's justice and precepts to ours social milieu. I think tour main problem is that we are in too much of a hurry. We want to act on what we think we already know rather than listen openly in silence to a deeper truer instruction. And we want to force our view ,or at least argue it, with those who have other views. And so spirituality degrades into an intellectual contest and is no longer spirituality at all.

What Sort of Preventative Treatment, Should the State Fund???

Rather than focussing on the (VERY expensive) preventative medicine that
currently the medical insurance companies MUST pay for (such as preventative
HIV medicine, that may const $30,000 a year), Christians should be thinking
about the general questions...

1 Does every citizen have some human RIGHT to have the state pay for ANY
preventative medicine?

2 What are the criteria under which the state SHOULD pay for preventative
medicine, for a citizen?

3 Do parents have the RIGHT to reject ANY preventative medicine treatment,
for their children? Under what criteria?

4 Should parents be allowed to reject preventative medicine, IF the result
does not affect the population, as a whole?

5 *** Where is the line, between the preventative medicine treatment that
Christians OUGHT TO comply with, as opposed to preventative medicine
decisions that the Christian Moral-Ethical model does not really address?
---------- ----------

Instead of simply getting angry, when this topic comes up, Christians
should openly debate these questions.

As for (1), I reject this claim. Because that blank assertion that the state
should pay for ALL preventative medicine, ignores the topic of personal
responsibility.

As for (2), the state (I assert) should pay for preventative medicine, IF
the preventative medicine has been proven to be effective, in rigorous
scientific studies, AND IF the resulting disease would substantially effect
the health of citizens who are not directly involved in the decision of those
who refuse the preventative treatment. As an extreme example of this, there
is no known "preventative" treatment for road rage. BUT, road rage results
in all sorts of damage to citizens, every year. HOWEVER, the psychological
"state" of a person can often be diagnosed as some sort of mental
dysfunction, that CAN be diagnosed by psychiatrists. Although psychological
dysfunctions may not be SPECIFIC to committing road rage, I assert that the
state has a moral-ethical ought to try to prevent certain citizens from driving
a vehicle. (There is the same situation, with owning firearms.)
---------- ----------

Unfortunately, some Christians reject the modern scientific methodology of
double-blind studies, to determine whether or not a treatment effectively
prevents some disease or dysfunction. Those who reject the reasoning
foundations of modern science, are blurring the line between logical
evaluations of efficacy, and religious constraints, and personal opinions.
This is not a purely a topic of "religious freedom".
---------- ----------

Christians need to be considering that there are many other deeper topics
that they should be discussing, and NOT simply whether or not some parents
have a "right" to withhold (for example) Measles vaccines from their children.
