SC Heat

Hot. So hot. My Location isn't Hudson River Valley, New York right now, it's the Lowcountry of South Carolina, near Charleston. NY's my home but this is where I am at the moment and it is HOT.

Two days in a row now have been essentially identical. Each day I've decided to go and challenge myself with a hike on the local trail here. Ho-ly cow, man, I tell ya what -- I am wiped out.

Today's hike...

102° when I left the house.
103° when I returned.

107-108° Heat Index

(For any non-Americans who might be reading this, that's about 42°C.)

Wicked hot.

Spent 1 hour and 59 minutes hiking.
Total time stopped with no movement: less than 1 minute.
Nice cool breeze: essentially none whatsoever.
% of shade on the hike -- about 30%
% of clouds in the sky -- about .0003%

Distance hiked: about 6 and 2/3 miles.

Surprisingly I actually walked at a pace that was no slower than if it was cool, comfortable day -- 3 1/3 miles per hour.

Total distance over two hikes in two consecutive days of no lower than 100° heat -- 12.5 miles.

I told someone I was gonna check out an album on my mp3 player but my brain was so fried that I felt like I couldn't reach into my pocket, pull out the player, turn off the radio, look through the playlists and play the album I had planned on listening to. Hopefully next time. Man, it was so rough out there. I haven't weighed myself but in about 26 hours I've probably lost about 4 pounds!

Yup. Fun afternoon. Actually it wasn't really fun, at least not super fun, it was more of a challenge for myself. Normally when I'm out there I can listen to some good Christian music and do some great thinking. Certain songs help me think about different issues pertaining to God and faith and life. But not today. Heat like this really affected my thinking to the point where I didn't really think at all. Thinking was pretty much turned off and all I did was just walk and that was about it. Walked and sipped my Gatorade. God Bless Gatorade. Actually I had one bottle of Kool-Aid and after that was gone, the Gatorade was like a small slice of Heaven in each sip. It kept me goin'. God kept me goin' but I'd swear the Gatorade sure helped!

I actually kinda sorta want it to be the same way again tomorrow so I can try to attempt an even longer walk, not much longer but another third or half mile or so, pushing me up over 7 miles. Even if it's not over 100 again, even if it's just a measly 97, it'll still be a test.

Yup. Heat like this I do not love. Don't like it, it's gross, I hate it. But I do love this challenge.
