'He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely,'I am not the Messiah' (John 1:20)......John the Baptist had never claimed to be Christ. He made it very clear to the Priests and Levites, many Pharisees, that He and Jesus denounced for their hypocrisy. His questioners were aware of the prophecies of the Messiah's coming and did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah. They wanted to find out if John the Baptist declared himself to be the Messiah, but John made it emphatically clear that he was not. They had heard of John the Baptist preaching repentance and the need for forgiveness. 'He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely,'I am not the Christ!'.
We can as believers, after the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, say with the hymnist,'Living for Jesus, wherever I am,doing each duty in His Holy Name. Willing to suffer affliction and loss, deeming each trial a part of my cross' (Thomas Chisholm)
