Heartache

It really pains me to think about how few people I have trust for. There’s really only one person I have complete trust with. And I feel blessed to have that while also sad that I do not have that with others in my life.
I think there are sort of different levels of trust. For instance, you might trust someone to keep your confidence, you can tell them things about yourself and trust that they won’t make fun of you, judge you, or blab all your intimate secrets to everyone they meet. There is also trusting someone to be honest with you about themselves, you trust that they don’t pretend who they are or other such things. And there is trusting someone not to harm you, physically but also trusting them not to do harm like taking off with your car if you lent them the keys or steal money from you if your purse or wallet was left around them. For me as a mom, trusting someone not to cause harm also means I’d trust them around my kids.
There is only one person I can really say I have who I trust in all these ways, trust to keep my confidence, trust they are honest about themselves, and trust them not to harm. No, no one is perfect, but trust isn’t expecting perfection, trust is faith in a person’s honesty and kindness. I have that with one person. Others, I might trust not to steal from me or harm my children, but I don’t trust to tell most things to. Or I don’t trust their honesty (or lack there of) with me. And that truly just saddens me.
