  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What if your soul believes that you have died and moves on to heaven or the afterlife?

It doesn't do it if you're rendered unconcious with drugs, why would it do it if you were unconcious with cold?

How does this "soul" thing think anything, btw?

Clinical death and unconsiousness are two different things.

And I honestly dont know, thats what would make me nervous to try that procedure.

It would be a last resort either way, something to be used if you're going to die anyway, but I don't think a soul-detachment would occur.

It is very probable that most cases will be real, actual death beyond any re-animation attempt anyway.

I would suspect as much.

There have been some various cases of people who fall in lakes/rivers in winter having this sort of effect, but it's very rare.

Yeah, trips across the vast gulf of space. That would be "cool".

My man brought up a really good point last night though, you'd need blood to put back into the travellers at the end, and we can only make viable blood last so long....

My idea was to grow fresh blood in vats on the ship once we develop THAT technology.

Which would, of course, also rid us of the need for blood donation. Ouch, got stuck myself today.

Reminds me of some character's attitudes towards transporters in Star Trek. Some of them think if your body is destroyed than put back together, your soul is then gone.

For that matter, is a perfectly identical clone (one that has identical memories, behaves exactly the same) soulless? Why?

It's kind of a moot point for me though, since I'm an atheist.

What worries me about this is what about our soul?

If the body is dead, the soul moves on. What happens if the body wakes up again after a few hours? There have been near death experiences but those lasted for a few minnutes or seconds, not hours.
One would guess that the spirit returns to it, similar to cases of near death experiences.

A body with no soul is an animal, quite simply, it runs on its base survival functions, language, ethics, behavior, none of it means anything. I would not under-go this procedure if it is indeed perfected for humans
one would say that a body with no spirit is a dead body.

My fiancee is convinced that one would have a sort of "Jacob's Ladder" type experience.

I don't think you'd experience anything at all if your brain wasn't shooting around it's usual signals.

I guess you could think of it this way: What would happen if you could stop everything in a human body, down to the molecular processes, putting it in suspended animation for an amount of time, then restart everything where it left off?

No reason to think that anything adverse would happen.

But again, I don't believe in the concept of a "soul" or any other facet of personality which can be detached from the physical body, so it's really not a problem for me.
