Psalm 88 (NKJV)
Psalm 88
A Prayer for Help in Despondency
A Song. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. To the Chief Musician. Set to “Mahalath Leannoth.” a Contemplation of Heman the Ezrahite.
1 O Lord, God of my salvation,
I have cried out day and night before You.
2 Let my prayer come before You;
Incline Your ear to my cry.
3 For my soul is full of troubles,
And my life draws near to the grave.
4 I am counted with those who go down to the pit;
I am like a man who has no strength,
5 Adrift among the dead,
Like the slain who lie in the grave,
Whom You remember no more,
And who are cut off from Your hand.
6 You have laid me in the lowest pit,
In darkness, in the depths.
7 Your wrath lies heavy upon me,
And You have afflicted me with all Your waves.
Selah
8 You have put away my acquaintances far from me;
You have made me an abomination to them;
I am shut up, and I cannot get out;
9 My eye wastes away because of affliction.
Lord, I have called daily upon You;
I have stretched out my hands to You.
10 Will You work wonders for the dead?
Shall the dead arise and praise You?
Selah
11 Shall Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave?
Or Your faithfulness in the place of destruction?
12 Shall Your wonders be known in the dark?
And Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
13 But to You I have cried out, O Lord,
And in the morning my prayer comes before You.
14 Lord, why do You cast off my soul?
Why do You hide Your face from me?
15 I have been afflicted and ready to die from my youth;
I suffer Your terrors;
I am distraught.
16 Your fierce wrath has gone over me;
Your terrors have cut me off.
17 They came around me all day long like water;
They engulfed me altogether.
18 Loved one and friend You have put far from me,
And my acquaintances into darkness.
God says His wonders will be known during the dark times.
This prayer for any person who needs it…cry out to the Lord and He shall answer.
We get like the person in this prayer when we forget on thing - that the words is near us!
The Lord our God has to be God and He will be because He is God. Yet He wants to be our friend and He is near us at all times. But do we believe that?
He once talked to me about seeking His face. He asked me what was on a face? Some eyes, a noise and a mouth but explained that His ears were on the side of His head. In the above Psalms we see a person crying out to the ears of the Lord, because of the troubles they are in. They wonder why the Lord is not answering them, and all they see is trouble.
The Psalmist, even a Psalmist, had concluded that "Loved one and friend" has been put far from them. So was Moses wrong ? Or perhaps this psalms serves as an example of who we are when we don't look to the Lord as a "Loved one and friend"
I was in the shower this morning and He was telling me, "Karl, I have to be God but I really want to be your friend." He has told me that before. Then during my sat aside time for Him this morning He asked me to go to Malachi and read.
Mal 3:13 "Your words have been arrogant against Me," says the Lord. "Yet you say, 'What have we spoken against You?' You have said, 'It is vain to serve God; and what profit is it that we have kept His charge, and that we have walked in mourning before the Lord of hosts?
So the Psalm is kept to show how we are with the Lord.
We say "
You have put away my acquaintances far from me."
Yet the Lord is near you, so we testify that you do not think of the Lord as an acquaintance. Is that ok by Him who is our Lord and wants to be our friend?
We ask "Why do You hide Your face from me? "
We but we are not looking to His face but to His ears which are on the side of His head! That is to say we ask the Lord rhetorical questions which are arrogant against Him, and we say that we have not spoken against Him!
Indeed, there is a reason for this Psalm, yet sadly the reason will get missed unless you stop asking rhetorical questions and realize that He, the One who loves you and wants to be your friend, is near you. He wants your questions but not your rhetorical questions, because He wants to be your acquaintance, your Loved One, and your friend! It is not so much that He has hidden His face from us but that we are not seeking His face but His ears.
My friends, try seek the face of the Lord - That is to say try to make your prayers about listening to Him who is near you!!!! Then you won't be in the sad situation of this Psalmist. That doesn't mean you won't have trails and tribulations in this world, but it does mean that you will have learn how to have peace in all situations
Frankly, the Psalmist should have been praying something like 'Ok Lord, what do you need me to do or learn next, and then listened'. And his prayer in his heart should have been about wanting to be the friend of God because he counted the Lord as a loved one. So it was a great piece of writing about how not to go about seeking the Lord. We saw that, right?
