  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I was under the impression everyone agreed that it´s important not to change the parameters of the hypothetical, and the "evil dictator" is one of the few parameters that has survived numerous changes made by the OP.

See my new hypothetical.

Perhaps this will work.

You crash on a dictators island.
He has tied kids on a specially laid train tracks. If you pull a switch the train will run over one kid and the rest will be avoided. If you dont it will run over all the kids.

Well, what I am seeing is this.

===Kid===switch====99kids===
____________======nokids===

So no problem pulling switch, one kid dies either way, and you have no way to stop it.

You don't get to be dictator of a country by being gullible enough to be confounded by such a shallow ruse.
Absolutely right. So then the dictator kills all the children after ____ seconds/minutes/hours/days.

Fill in blank, pls.

It took me about 10 minutes to skim through all 157 posts. I'm still wondering why I did that. One thing I know for sure is I want that wasted time back.
...but then you wasted even more of your precious time by typing a counterproductive response.

If it is meant to be an ethical question, finding the "cute way out" removes it from ethics and puts it into puzzle category. If the answer is take the kids out of the room, I would hope this thread gets removed for being unrelated to ethics or morality.
How would the answer change the fact that it's an ethical question?

Read "Storm of the Century" by Stephen King. Same type of moral dilemma.

For me personally, I would not shoot any child. If the dictator went through with his threat the blood of those children would be on his hands, not mine. As for how the parents would view me, that would honestly be their own problem. If I kill one child, I would have to face that child's parents - and that child's blood WOULD be on my hands because I did indeed kill that child.

That's one of the problems I've had posing ethical questions to people. They always go against the spirit of the game and try to find the "way out".
I must say I find that perfectly reasonable. When we have to deal with ethical questions in reality, they always pop up in a situation, in a context, and situation and context determine what can be done and what is to do.
Whilst ethical hypotheticals typically try to remove all those elements that actually would be there if I were facing a dilemma.
I´m not sure I see the point in pretending I have a problem that I will not and can never have.

Indeed, I think the actual question behind the hypothetical is: Is it ethical to kill one to save 100? And the answer is: it depends on the situation and the context, as well as all the other options that are available.
The attempt of the hypothetical to create a concrete situation from the abstract question without actually creating a realistic situation (but instead doing every effort to remove everything situational and contextual) is somewhat absurd.

You'll notice as people present their "out of the box" solution, the original premise keeps changing to "correct" the oversight. To me it makes it clear what he is trying to ask.
