A man of average size could stroll onto a school yard and with a baseball bat kill 20+ 1st graders in a matter of minutes. Anyone with 5-gallons of gasoline and a match could torch a school. Anyone with a van filled with 20 or so 5-gallon gas can could drive up beside a school bus and blow it up.

God please don't let these things happen!

The problem here is not firearms or their availability. It is the sickness of human hearts. No law is going to prevent mass murder as there are simply too many ways to do it. No retriction of freedom will solve the problem.

I would suggest of course that if we know a person to be a "terroist" then that person should already be in jail! The problem lies with discerning who might use a gun (knife, bomb, gasoline, or rat poison) against innocents from getting it and using it. Difficult to do indeed if we are to allow the remaining 99.999% of us to live as a free people.

And since it is nearly impossible to do (identify murderers in advance), I submit the old saying, "An armed society is a polite society". Make firearms and self defense traing mandatory to graduate high school. Watch accidental shootings plummet. Give everyone a weapon of choice on their 20th birtday, and watch the crime rate plummet. Criminals look for prey, not armed citizens.

The problem isn't guns as guns were around in the 40s 50s 60s and 70s and so on but we didn't have these school shootings till the last few decades. The problem is in the way we raise children who grow up to somehow think it is good to do such things. Either we are teaching children wrong or not paying attention to problem children plain and simple. Almost every idea of gun control won't stop people who want to kill others it just will inconvenience them some. Since we have the same party who wants open borders when gun control comes it will only add gun running to border problems along with drug running and those who live in higher crime areas will see an increase in attacks upon them. The elite will have their guns and armed security with guns and ammo and magazines that they will make provisions for them to be legal for them but not us.
What we need is more guns and more freedom to carry them everywhere such that it is common to have people with so many guns trained properly to use them if someone were to break into a school to shoot someone they would find 6 bullets in them before they can shoot anyone back.

Now we have licensing for driving cars. And most kids have family members who help them learn how to drive.

When the Constitution started, guns were a family affair. At least one parent had a gun and you could be brought up with one . . . not with a binky. Now kids get a binky and their parents haven't a clue what to do with a gun; so now more kids bring themselves up . . . to have or not have a gun. In any case, it can be that people with guns do not use them in a family relationship and culture . . . like when the Constitution was developed.

I can see how it could be good to have a governed way of licensing people where kids don't get an upbringing with a gun.

And if you expect police to be screened and trained before using weapons . . . why only police?

People still are expected to get a marriage license. But you don't get screened much, for anything except if you already are married.

I went into a city hall to ask how to get a marriage license. They guy very nicely explained, but then he smiled at me and said, "There is one thing, though; you need to bring a lady with you." I was alone. A marriage license is not like a hunting license

But wrongly done marriages possibly have resulted in more harm, than guns have. Gun criminals often can be a byproduct of marriages which have not given children the upbringing and example they need.

So, perhaps it could work to have regulation more where there is no family culture to help prepare people to use guns well. The choice could be left to each town and city.

But if we are more-so depending on guns to keep people from doing crimes . . . what kind of mindset could gun dependence get us into?

And there are road rage people ready to explode; if they all have guns, what could this bring? And there are people feeling tempted to suicide, in professions as nurses and doctors and clerics, which have a high suicide rate as it is; if they have guns handy, they might not first take time to breathe and get peer help.

But it could go another way > one might have a gun as a way out of a troubled life, but having a way out might help the person to feel in control so the person stays.

Even so, police, with all their screening and training, have guns which might have them feel in control; yet, they have a high suicide rate. Does the availability of guns make it more common for them to commit suicide? Or, does the availability of a gun give them a feeling of power so they do not commit suicide as much as troubled ones without guns?

Possibly, depending on their guns gets them into a mindset of not depending on God . . . so then they can break down and commit suicide.

In such a case, the gun is not really the problem.

Blaming the guns can be a way of avoiding dealing with a real problem.

Those people tend to have their own arrangements for obtaining firearms. I believe it is essential to preserve the freedom for law-abiding Americans to obtain them for themselves, so more of us have a means of defense against them.

We do have a gun violence problem, just as we have a stabbing, poisoning, burning, strangling, drowning, beating...violence problem. "Gun violence" is a subset of overall violence. However, most guns deaths, suicides, aren't the act of an immoral person.

I see no purpose or benefit in categorizing or enumerating the tool used other than to demonize the tool and not the act.

I agree, but categorizing the weapons is useful as well for statistical purposes.
