  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Except that when you go to a class, they invariably chant...
Your allegations about the Catholic Church, while 'no secret', are incorrect. If anything, they took things they liked, assigned a Catholic meaning to them, and so on. Certainly nothing to do with the faith, but for government. Didn't take any pagan holidays and make them Christian.
My sister is a yoga teacher. They don't chant or do Hindu spirituality.

The problem with discussing Yoga is that the term can refer to a million different things. Properly speaking it really should refer only to specific types of Hindu spiritual exercises, but Hinduism is such a disparate and disjointed religion (to the point that I would hesitate to call it a single religion, but instead call it a host of similar religion) that even when used for that purpose it can still refer to a huge number of distinct practices. To make matters worse there are many exercises programs which have taken some of the physical exercises from traditional Yoga, removed the spiritual components. These exercise programs may add their own innovations, becoming something else entirely.

So it is impossible to definitively say anything about Yoga. The topic is too broad.

What is dangerous is that people can see one Yoga class and assume that all Yoga is identical. This is absolutely not the case, but it is natural to think, especially if you have little familiarity with Hinduism. So someone may see a Yoga class which is obviously nothing but a series of stretches to help with flexibility, and then hear someone warn of another class that teaches false religious beliefs, or which is spiritual dangerous. Assuming that Yoga just means a boring exercise class, the claims seem ridiculous on the face. But it's possible that those claims are accurate, depending on the type of Yoga that they were describing.

This is a completely disingenuous statement and I'm done with you on this subject.
Typical. I used a generic 'you', and you, personally, take it personally. Meh.
