Individual Christians may keep Christmas but the church is not to institute holy days.

“Festival days, vulgarly called holy-days, having no warrant in the Word of God, are not to be continued.” Westminster Assembly, Directory for Public Worship (1645)

I love Christmas, not only because of the celebration of the birth of Jesus but an occasion to bring together family, friends, children, grandchildren and elders who may not have many years left, it's a joyous time to be thankful for all the Lord has given us, not the least of which is eternal life because of His beloved Son's sacrifice.

yes I believe we have Christian freedom to celebrate certain traditions, as long as we understand they aren't law or doctrine.

William Prynne, Histriomastix, said that Christmas ought to be "rather a day of mourning than of rejoicing."

Prynne wrote that in response to the gluttonous rioting that took place during season of Christ Mass.

Perhaps that explains in part why Prynne had to appear before the Star Chamber and was sentenced in 1634 to be pilloried, imprisoned for life and was fined £5,000, along with other irrational statements. :)

That's right...stand with William Laud against the Evangelical church you most identify with? Prynne stood against the simony and false teaching of William Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury...and suffered for it.

Yours in the Lord,

jm
PS: Laud was executed for his crimes including treason, for trying to re-establish ties between the CofE and Popery.

He mourned the sinfulness that was exhibited during Christ Mass. What should our response be to over spending, over eating, over indulging; in other words, what should our response to sin be?

Do you celebrate Christmas?

All I've got to say is that not a single Christian celebrated His birth back then, so why should we do it now .. Granted, there were those wacky Arab astrologists who brought Him some cool and smelly gifts, and there were a bunch of Jews who had nothing better to do than watch the grass grow who did decide to stop by, but those guys weren't Christians! Oh, and there was that big party that the entire host of heaven came out for, but it got so loud, God had to send some of the angels down to try to explain why everyone in Heaven was whoop'n it up so much (and, I hope, to promise that they'd try to keep it down a bit for the rest of the night). Of course it goes w/o saying, those guys weren't Christians either!!

Sooooo, celebrate Christmas? No way dude cause, clearly, it's not a Christian thing to do.

You're right my brother in Christ, from my perspective I think of Christmas as only a celebration of the birth of Christ our Lord, I took umbrage at his crass statement that Christmas should be mourned and not celebrated without considering the context in which he said it.

Sometimes things get a little too PC for me on this forum and this is one occasion that it did, can't we just enjoy the holiday season?

I do hope you and your loved ones will have very merry Christmas.

JustAsIam,

Let me restate; we are allowed according to scripture to set days aside, but the church is not to institute them over us. May you enjoy the time you have with your loved ones. I will with mine.

Yours in the Lord,

jm

His birth was the fulfillment of a promise. His death was an accomplishment of a purpose. He was born in order to die. Yes we ought to celebrate His advent but not as a day but every day.

Having said that I am thankful that at least 2 times a year folks are reminded of Him. Though I am not into all the decorating and hearing Christmas songs until you are sick of them I do enjoy the time of year when family gets together and also the opportunity to give to others, just not the Salvation Army as I refuse to give to an organization that blatantly hates my God.
