How is not killing a burglar tantamount to letting an invader "rape [one's] mother"? Most home invasions are committed by strung out drug addicts looking for a few things they can sell for dope money. Sure, every once in a while, someone will break into your home with more nefarious motives, but this is a very rare occurrence. And, how you react to someone stealing your stuff should be quite different than how you react to someone harming a loved one.
Wow. All that would go thru your mind before you feared for life or safety? You must live in a nice place. Good for you.

I grew up & have lived in nice places but every one of them went bad & got out in plenty time, but last time I moved in '95 was a close call. I have friends who work for the police & I get to hear about crimes that get stopped because a citizen was carrying.
When it's too big for the media to ignore, they make it seem novel & start shakin' the old "vigilante scarecrow".

pssst...it's the same Jesus....
Of course it is, but no where Biblically are we instructed to follow the examples of the second coming of Christ. We are instructed to follow the Christ who walked the Earth among men and lived like a man. If you can't see the distinction so be it, but I've read the Bible many times and IMO there definitely is a distinction, unless you really think it's your job to currently showing God's judgement through action upon the earth....then of course I'm obviously wrong.

In 99% of the country, No.

I can understand households having guns in very high-crime areas; but otherwise why would ordinary households (who don't do any gun-related sports or activities) want to have guns?

What has happened in American culture that has made you so fearful that you believe you need to always have weapons to protect yourself?

There was a mass spree killing by one man in Port Arthur, Tasmania (the big island below mainland Australia years ago. Martin Bryant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Australian Government immediately put tight restrictions on all semi-automatic weapons.

What does type of law(s) does the USA make when this type of thing happens? (I really don't know so that is a serious question).

I am so glad I do not live in the UK.

I live in the UK and there is guns about and used by criminals but we have people that will come into your house, take, your eye balls and come back for the sockets if they could.
Shame we cant have guns to protect ourselves. House brakers looking for to feed there habit will just knife you if you get in there way.

Get in there first is what I say. Its just a great shame that one could get life over here for killing an intruder!
I'm migrating to the states

Head shots are very hard, particularly when you're not trained and your adreneline is pumping.
The reality is that most people who aren't trained are more likely to shoot themselves or a loved one with a handgun than they are to shoot anyone else sucessfully.

I'm curious if you have something that backs up that statement with actual numbers.

well now you DO realize Jesus when He returns will be kicking bee-hind and will be quite the Warrior, do you not?
Yes, but not in the way you seem to think.

Jesus spent a considerable time trying to get into the think heads of his disciples that his Kingdom doesn't look like that sort of Kingdom. That he would deal with evil, but not in the way they expected. And he did that on the cross and resurrection. Why on earth would anyone think he's suddenly going to say "april fool! let's get to the hacking and shooting like any good Messiah" when he comes again?

1. For protection
2. For recreation

What has happened in American culture that has made you so fearful that you believe you need to always have weapons to protect yourself?

What has happened in Austrailian culture that has made you so fearful that you believe you need to always have smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in your homes?

What does type of law(s) does the USA make when this type of thing happens? (I really don't know so that is a serious question).

Typically, none, because we still have enough sense to understand that punishing law abiding citizens doesn't stop criminals.

Does that include the Christ who instructed His followers to go out and buy swords to protect themselves with?

Is it possible that Jesus is speaking more about endtimes? Specifically how do you interpret the entirity of the Scripture?

I'll give it qualifies as one of few times that Jesus speaks about needing to toughen up, but ironically shortly after this He reconnects a soldiers ear and makes clear that it wasn't okay for them to cut his ear off. Thoughts?

EDIT: Sorry this response is kind of jumbled and juvenile, my dad is rushing me so that we can go the movies =D

Revelations wasn't presented so that Christian's would act like Christ, the point of Revelations is to show us the judgement of Christ that is to come. We are, however, presented a Earthly Christ who is merely a man of God and that is a better representation of how we should act.

I'm not saying one way or the other how Christ feels about shooting, but saying "Oh, but Jesus was so hardcore in Revelations so that's how I'm going to be" isn't exactly using Scripture as it's meant IMO.

This same Jesus overthrew tables and threw out the buyers and sellers in the Temple. It was a holy wrath that was emanating from Him. He also killed an olive tree that bore no fruit. In either of these situations He was not smiling. Make no mistake, He is holy. He did this and sinned not. It was a holy wrath. And we are to do the same with anyone threatening our loved ones. It's called righteousness. Righteousness does not feed into evil and allow it to fester, thus enabling it. The enemy is deceptive and attempts to place Christians in fearful little boxes where they become no eartjly good whatsoever, and even become a danger to others. Swift, decisive action is required in dire situations.

It is written that the children of God are as bold as lions. Sorta like David was when he faced-down Goliath, and killed him, even cutting off his head.

God called David the "apple of His eye".

Do you not realise that you are denying what the cross is all about? That the way evil is defeated is not through violence but through the upside-down power of Jesus' self-sacrificial love. By letting evil do its worst to him and coming out the other side in the resurrection.

I have never read Scripture of Jesus harming another person, that is all I can say. You may live your life as you please, but as for me and my house we will serve the Lord as we have been called, through unwaivering peace and love. Righteousness is not defined by violence, but rather the just reaction. Even if the believer holds themselves to the laws of "an eye for an eye", a mere invader of a home is not equivalent to murder or rape.

It has nothing to do with where I live. My comment is based on experience that comes with actively participating in the criminal justice system. I am around criminals everyday, and my experience has been that for every one that is genuinely a threat to my safety, there are 20-30 who are just dope fiends looking to score their next buzz.

But, my point is this: the OP was about "home invaders". It was not about rapists or murderers. It is frankly dishonest and downright obscene to claim or even insinuate that those of us who said that we would not shoot a home invader would "allow him to rape our mothers." You can disagree with me in the choice that I would make (I wouldn't even have a gun in my house in the first place.) I am just asking you to be honest in expressing your disagreement.
