  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Would you save your cat/dog or a person you don't know?

I would hope that I would choose the stranger. But never having been in this situation I honestly do not know what I would do---but I feel the right choice, for me, would be to save a the person.

It's kind of funny that this was posted. A couple of hours ago some kid pulled the fire alarm lever in our apartment buiding. I do have 3 cats and 2 childern. As as it went off one of the cats hide under the bed. I grabed the other two cats and shoved them in the carrier that we keep under the desk in the living room and we evacuated the building.

We didn't know at that time whether or not it was a real emergency or a false alarm. And I have to admit that I felt horrilbe only having two of the three cats, but I felt I could not risk my son's safety by trying to coax the other cat out from under the bed.

Thankfully, my daughter was not home tonight (sleep over at a friend's house) or she would have been in hysterics over not being able to get all the cats out.

It seems to be about the value we ascribe to things.

If you posed the same question regarding a stranger and a strange pet i think most people would go for the stranger. Perhaps im wrong on this but if all other factors are equal i think we'd go by species.

Add a emotional investment and it gets fussier.
I wonder if the answer that is given also connects to how much the person is able to feel for the pet and im reminded of those petrescue shows where some people misthreat their pets just because they dont think of them as anywhere near their won human value, just animals.

if you think of a pet as just an animal i can see having no difficult choose between a person and a pet/tv

While if you consider a pet as a equal life form then the deciding factor is going to hinge on your connection to it.

Going by that logic, would it be fair to say that christains think of pets as just animals since that is the bibles teaching. and thus have a easier time picking the special human stranger?

Going by pure cold logic of what benifits society would also require you to consider why you think the value to society matters wouldnt it? You could make the same case for years left to live relatively. Either way humans are emotional creatures not robots. As much as we can reason the 'correct' answer that does not mean we will act acording to reason <I think we have plenty of evidence of that>

in the end..
Id for the pet cause the odds are in favor of that person being a complete dick and we got plenty of em.
(notice what i did there? demonized the stranger in order to justify my own choice. perfectly human)
