  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yet another 'good Samaritan' is injured trying to help others.

Good Samaritan shot in head attempting to break up road rage confrontation: Police

Under what conditions would you intervene in such an event?

Only if my being in that place at all is inexorable. I'm not going to stop at an altercation if I'm driving past.

And then I'd get involved only if someone is clearly in danger of serious injury.

Since I'd be armed, I'm well aware "Every fistfight can turn into a gunfight," so I'd be exceedingly cautious and would likely not interfere at all until someone else had already been severely injured to the point that my immediate action would be to end the fight at gunpoint.

As part of my job (nursing), I am required to assist someone in public in the event of a medical emergency. On one occasion, I had to do first aid on someone who had alcohol poisoning, vomiting, and collapsed unconscious in the street. The friends of the casualty were very drunk and trying to interfere - and it gave me some appreciation for frontline workers such as paramedics who have to deal with that all the time. I would only help out if I was satisfied that I was not putting myself at risk.

That's a tough one. I think if we all knew the outcome of what would happen to us if we did or didn't do something, our actions would greatly be affected from the get-go. Think of all the things we wouldn't do in life if we knew the absolute outcome, and vice-versa.

Ultimately as Christians, we don't need to operate in fear and not help someone we feel led to (because Jesus has our lives in His hands), but at the same time, we need to use wisdom in every situation so we're not intentionally placing ourselves in a situation we shouldn't be involved in.

I don't think there's a right or wrong answer here. I think it just depends on the individual and what they are feeling led to do.

If it were me, I'd call 911. But this person probably thought they were helping and had no idea their very life was at stake in doing so.

So it's a judgment call in my opinion.

I will never understand the compulsion some civilians have to break up fights. Maybe they're wannabe cops or something, idk. But it's stupid and dangerous to get between two people who want to beat each other up. It's sad that the guy is dead but I'm guessing his family members wish he could've at least died for a worthy cause.

But if you must get involved, call the police and alert them as to what's going on. Or maybe you can film the event from a safe distance and then volunteer to turn it over to the police as evidence in case they need it later on.

Breaking up fights, though, is just a bad idea unless you're legally permitted to wear a badge and carry a gun.

Sometimes people act out of compassion for the victim, sometimes stepping in without thought to their own personal safety. The times are getting more and more violent these days so it's getting more dangerous even for the Police. Best for a Christian to send a prayer before they jump into some altercation with unknown people. Your question , would I interfere? weird choice of word imo, I have jumped in when no one else did.

I generally do not get involved in other people's confrontations unless it's a friend, or, family member. Same for accidents and injuries...I call law enforcement and continue on my way.

Even if you succeed in defusing the situation, the potential for this incident turning your life upside down for the next five years are higher than I would want to deal with.

When I was a younger man in the Navy, on one occasion in Hawaii I saw a Marine lay his motorcycle down trying to show off in front of some locals. Needless to say, he skidded over a metal plate welded over some old pay phone poles, and impaled his leg on one, and tore his leg off. I rendered assistance, and he survived despite massive blood loss. An ambulance showed up and took him to a local hospital. I got back to the base, reported the incident, and for the next however long, seemed like months, statement, after statement, talk to this person, talk to that person, and it never seemed to end. So I swore off good Samaritan acts...just call 911.
