  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

would you do this?

I've mentioned in a couple other places that I'm currently seeking employment. I am applying for one private school teaching position, and one requirement of this private school is that every member of the school community attend a chapel service weekly. It's a non-denominational chapel, but lead by an episcopalian minister. Of course, it's still Christian, but I feel a bit iffy about seeking employment there. Like, let's say I got a job there, would I be able to go and participate in mandatory non-denominational services every single week? I know I wouldn't commune at them, but still... I don't know. Maybe I'm being too anti-ecumenist about it.

Thoughts?

This sounds like another of those "ask your priest" situations. That being said, the "preparation for confession" section in one of my prayer books asks: "Have you frequented the religious gatherings of heretics?"

Yeah I'd have to ask my priest. And I wouldn't want to guess what he might say. He did once tell me to go to Church with my husband for his sake (and I did). Work is a reason too. But too many factors come in to guess.

With that said, if my SF didn't have a problem, and if I felt ok about myself, and if I KNEW there would be no pressure to embrace anything I didn't agree with or censuring for what I did believe ... if, if, if ... I could consider going to chapel once a week for the sake of a job as long as it didn't interfere with going to my Church and they were within what I'd be comfortable with as being Christian (which I'm fairly broad-minded about that but I do have lines I'd rather not cross, and wouldn't want to go to a non-Christian religious meeting on a regular basis - or maybe not at all).

First thing to do is ask your priest though.

this is ask your priest. although normally it's not a problem if you don't participate (if it's something mandatory). this is how a lot of Orthodox who teach at non-Orthodox seminaries and religious colleges get by.

but ask your priest.

sent an email to my priest asking about it. Actually, I had two calls with this school today - they're trying to bring me to visit campus on Thursday. So they're moving very quickly, which is exciting (even though I feel iffy about this).

But also, the moment I hung up the phone with them the second time, I got a call from another job I applied for, and they offered it to me. That's a part time thing though (but it would probably become full time before the end of the year, maybe the end of the summer). So I thank you all for your prayers, and please continue to pray for me, my search, and guidance in these matters

I still go to Quaker meetings a lot of the time with my husband. The priest who brought me into the church said it was okay because I was doing it to keep peace in my marriage. Plus, I usually bring a book that is spiritually helpful to read. So, I would probably do it, but not participate other than being there.

My priest doesn't think it would be an issue. I still hesitate though, but perhaps that's my pride. He's advising me to take this opportunity if I'm offered a position with them, whereas my parents are advising me to take the part-time offer I received... I have a meeting with one of my advisors later too, so I'll see what he says.

Maybe I just won't actually receive this job offer, and I won't have to worry about it!

Another thing is at this school, the closest Orthodox church is at least 40 minutes away (western rite) or 55 minutes away (Greek). That's manageable, for sure. But with the other part time position -- depending on where I'd live -- there are 2 churches (Greek and Ukrainian) and a skete less than 40 minutes away. So that's a lot easier.

It is. It’s buried deep into the canon law. Only an advanced legal mind like myself can find the clause.
