Hey,
I have a desktop that does not have an hdmi port. I am wondering if buying a vga to hdmi adapter would make my pc able to run on a television that only has HDMI? Has anyone heard of such a thing and is it worth the $20?

I suspect it will work, so i looked on line and found this which seems to confirm it:

Using an HDMI-to-VGA Adapter
The HDMI interface allows the transfer of both audio and video signals via a single cable while VGA support the only video signals. This means that using a direct HDMI-to-VGA adapter/cable will only send video signals to your VGA monitor; no audio.Dec 21, 2018

Of course you can probably pick up a used vga monitor for around 20.00 locally or on ebay.

Sorry, it is possible but may be easier just to buy a cheap vga monitor.

'Monitors are cheaper and lighter and this means that something has got to go, so noVGA. A VGA output on your computer to an HDMI input connection on a monitor willrequire an active adapter or converter to convert the signal from analog to digital '

I have done this before with PC monitors. I don't think you're going to get the full benefit of HDMI unless the VGA card supports the resolution that the monitor is capable of displaying. Just check the stat sheet on the video card. The monitor will work but maybe not at it's optimal resolution. Probably cheaper though than upgrading the desktop.

I'm pretty certain you can do it that way around (the adapters are usually for the reverse), but depending on the size and resolution of the TV it will probably look awful.

If you have DVI as an option on your computer it will definitely work DVI-HDMI.

Also if your desktop has a spare PCI-e slot (and isn't in a weird case) you could get a super cheap graphics card (like an nVidia GT710) and shove it in there.

How old is the computer if it doesn't have an HDMI port?

Going off his other posts in the forum, I'm guessing closer to 10. That said, they don't have to be necessarily old. 4 years ago I got hold of some newer upper-end Dell laptops that only had VGA for some reason.

I also have had a few mid-range Dell OptiPlex SFF desktops that have only had VGA and DP that are within the 5-10 year range.
