  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Dont get me started on that little's boy voice I can be sleeping and hear it and get mad cause i have to get up to change the tv cause his voice irks me

This is because you watch the English dubbed ones, if you watch the Japanese ones with subs, it's not so bad...who wouldn't hate Naruto's english voice...*very harsh voice* "BELIEVE IT"...*shudders*

I hate the 'BELIEVE IT' deal.

The Japanese version is alot better.
Yeah, the Japanese voices work quite well with the characters.

Can't stand the English dub anymore.
I watched the whole series as a fansub, and started collecting the Uncut DVD sets. In the first episode they actually typed out "Believe it!" once and I almost shot myself. I swore if they continued to translate the meaningless "dattebayo" as "believe it" in the subs I was going to just stick with the fansub, legality be damned. Thankfully it seems to be just a one-time occurance and haven't seen it again.

His older self, in the Shippuden series, is WAY cooler, but overall, it's not bad.
Gotta disagree with that. His older self is so frustrating because he hasn't developed as much as he should have in the three years between series... both skill wise and personality wise. If the Naruto series didn't have such a rich cast of supporting characters I would have given up on Naurto himself long ago.

Yes but his character is still a VAST improvement from his younger self.

It is. Although I have to admit confusion as to your use of tense: "used to". You no longer a fan?

I have to be unusual because I won't bother with the English dubbed. Even when they try to preserve the original anime they end up mucking it up. I haven't read the whole thread but I see that Sailor Moon was thrown out a few times, well the English dub was a completely waste of time (though not as bad as the proposed english *live action* that they were going to do at one time) but the original was actually quite a bit different (and much much much better)

The problem is that dubbed anime is still aimed at young children when the originals often were not aimed at that same age group. This often ends up with multiple changes to characters and the storylines so that the anime as a whole is basically completely different than it's Japanese version).

My personal worst? Cardcaptors (the English dub of "Card Captor Sakura") or the English Escaflowne. Both were done in a time when the English companies refused to believe that there were adults who watch anime so they did whatever they pleased (which believe it or not, the companies are improving.......slowly).

I'm with you. With very few exceptions, I avoid dub like the plague. The only stuff (that I've seen) that I like the dub as much as the sub is the Miyazaki stuff released by Disney... Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, etc.

Interesting idea... though I don't know if I agree with it. Perhaps as far as television viewing is concerned I could see companies having that mentality. But companies aren't stupid. They know who buys anime... heck, they know who has disposable income and it sure ain't kids.

Still, the presence of dubs on most anime DVD releases, even the obviously non-kid titles, simply betrays the fact that most of America doesn't want to read a show/movie. And dubbing is far from a perfect science. With subbing you don't have to worry about things like mouth movement and tone of voice and all that jazz. But with Dubbing they have to make the English speech do a semi-adequate job of matching what the mouth is doing. That inevitably leads to changes.

Well with the Miyazaki done by Disney they actually got very high end actors to do the voices. I mean the voice of Howl in the English was Christian Bale, the latest version of Batman in the current movies.

But it's the young kids that bring in the money in regards to merchandising (or at least that is still the big opinion of the companies). Vast majority of the anime fans that I know of that are in their 30s and 40s remember the days where the companies didn't care for the adult anime fans and didn't see us as viable group who would buy anime brought to english speaking countries. The days before the internet became the big world wide thing ment that as a fan you would quietly find other fans who knew of the people out there doing subtitles to anime and shipping it out to those who would cover the cost of shipping.

It's leaps and bounds above where it was 15-20yrs ago in regards to anime but it's still changing at the speed of molasses. Yes, making a dub is difficult work but there are so many decent dubs out there so that just shows me a lack of trying to make a good product on the part of the companies. Also if they were aiming this at the adult anime fans (or even the teenage anime fans) then why make the content changes (for example removing blood splatter from Naruto or even removing all deaths from Sailor Moon). Those have nothing to do with matching up words to mouth movement so it shows they are still using little kids as the main target market.

Still, at least with Naruto, they release the unedited versions in the Uncut boxsets. Which says to me that they recognize both sides of the market. I mean, they've done a fantastic job making Naruto a popular kids show. But they also know that there are people like me who are fans of the show, but don't want them screwing around with it: thus the Uncut DVDs without the edits and with a sub option. Which I'm quite OK with.
