I like a great many of the bands on the hate list here. I'm just glad that nobody said Breaking Benjamin, because then it would be war, although I'm sure with all of the hate for most of the rock bands I listen to going around, there will be somebody who despises them in every way shape or form.

I myself can't stand really heavy metal. I'm into singing, not screaming O.O. SOAD aggravates me most of the time because they're so weird I can't even connect to it. Most rap is annoying. Most country is annoying. Incidentally, Linkin Park is one of my favorite bands ever.

SOAD is no way even remotely metal. For the genre heavy metal 2 of the most well known bands are EARLY metallica (pre black album), some great songs by them are One, Fade to black, Welcome Home (Sanitarium) and for some more up-beat songs 'Master of Puppets' 'Disposeble Heroes' (best anti war song ever :D) and Iron Maiden (have always rocked :D Some great songs by them are 'Hallowed be thy name' and 'Fear of the dark'

SOAD isn't a good example of metal, and besides, not all metal is 'screaming' as you put it, in fact, theres a whole genre of metal with clean vocals....called power metal, also, more classic metal bands such as Judas Priest and Iron Maiden also have such vocals.

I didn't think SOAD was metal. They just sound like crap to me. Not enough talent there to actually put into a genre. O.O

I like some metal, but anything that anybody has ever let me listen to, I thought was crap. I like Nightwish a lot, but apparantly so does everybody else. I have largely unexplored the metal area of music. Maybe I should take this grand opportunity to ask: Based on my liking Nightwish, what other bands do you people think I should check out? ( I like others besides Nightwish, but they're first and foremost in my mind... and it's early... ^.^ )

Oh yeah. And to this I would like to add an extreme dislike for all girl punk/pop whatever you wanna call it music, which includes almost all Hilary Duff, Kelly Clarkson, Lindsay Lohan, Avril Lavigne songs. There are a few that I like, but they're few and far between. I don't like boy bands. I don't like Justin Timberlake and never have, even when everybody else was professing their wish to have his sweet love babies. * gag *. I'm really hoping that was just a local thing and that girls around the USA didn't have these same horrible delusions.

Edit: Hah! I can add these to my list of things that make me old. " I'm so old that I remember when there were people who actually liked Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake

SOAD, not metal at all, but I do think they are good at what they do, just not for sure what it is that they do.

I'm sure Yam Kimil understands this seeing his avatar and some of his other posts, what is called, "metal" isn't close to metal. Power metal is still going strong, but you won't hear much about them. Personally, I think anyone can get into Bruce Dickinson (singer of Iron Maiden) solo works. He has a great voice and so does Rob Halford of Judas Priest. I think the only thing new fans to Power Metal may have a problem with is the lyrics, you do get a lot of fantasy lyrics about mythology and such. Dream Theater can only make your opinion of metal, better. Even though some people say they are not really metal, but hard rock. With all of these serious bands, I hate to throw in a less serious band, but a band that I consider as metal as metal can get is Motorhead. I'm not for sure what the opinion on this band is, but I really like Shadow's Fall. It's not as heavy as I thought it would be, but they really seem to have real talent in their band. One you will probably never hear of, Devin Townsend, his solo band away from Strapping Young Lad is very acceptable to people who don't like really heavy music, but if you like or want to try something heavy, Strapping Young Lad, his other band, is about as extreme as one can get.

Hillary Duff and Lindsey Lohan sing? I thought they were just actors, I am way behind.

I'm sure there are many more that are slipping my mind right now. Hope this helps.

If you like Nightwish you will almost certainly like bands like Within Temptation (very similar to Nightwish musically and vocally), Evanescence, Autumn and most other gothic/opera metal bands.

You should also try some good old traditional heavy metal like Iron Maiden, EARLY Metallica (I'd start out with the albums Master of Puppets and And justice for all...., for loose song here are some must listens: One , 'one' of their best ;) Fade to black, simply beautifull, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), a beautifull balad, for some good more fast paced songs Master of Puppets, probebly one the their best and wellknown, Disposeble Heroes, need to read lyrics of that one, For whom the bell tolls.

For Maiden I would look into these songs to start with: Hallowed be thy name, one of their very best and beautifull, Fear of the dark, The Trooper, Children of the damned. All Maiden songs are mostly pretty calm and have a pretty imo uplifting feel to them.

ah yes, Nightwish, quite the awsome band there, but i'd say their talent comes in the form of Tarja's vocals and Holopainen's composing (not to mention lyrics). And whats wrong with people liking them? Would you rather they like evanescense instead?

Coincidencially, Nightwish is a power metal band, the music style and vocal style fit the genre while the lyrics do not, most powermetal bands sing about medival battle, fantasy quests or stories, a general 'warrior' idea and sometimes other things, (rarely do i hear a PM song remotely mentioning love)So, if you can't stand that kind of cheesiness (to quote a cheesy line from a hammerfall lyrics "Sisters and brothers, in metal unite!") then PM probably is not for you. That is, of course, if you even pay attention to the lyrics. I find certain bands are easier to like if you disregard lyrics or vocal styles...

Besides lyrics, PM is known for the musical style. More often than not, the music is closely related to more classic metal, the best example being Iron Maiden. They usually have a few ballads or slow songs and most powermetal bands have a more pure concept of metal in their music. Also, their vocal styles are known to be clean, and most often sang in a opera style, or if not, they use vibratos anyway, so the vocal styles isn't as much of a put off as in say, death or black metal (other awsome genres by the way). Also, power metal bands have an upbeat feel to them most of the time, unlike other genres.

anyway, to the point.
Here's my list of recommendations, first, in relation to Nightwish. These are more popular bands, hence, are easier to get a hold of.
1. Blind Guardian
2. Dragonforce
3. Hammerfall
4. Rhapsody
5. Iced Earth

and now, bands not related to nightwish, but worth listening to, i'll try to stick to those with clean vocals, but try to keep an open mind anyway. Each are from different veins of metal.
1. Dream Theater (they are, in fact, metal, listen to Train of Thought)
2. Megadeth
3. Fear Factory
4. Dark Tranquility
5. Avenged Sevenfold (but here's my deal with them http://www.christianforums.com/t2084945-avenged-sevenfold.html)

anyway, i'm always glad to introduce someone into more metal, as you can plainly see, i love talking about it. Well, here's to hoping you expand your horizons.

I'm kind of combining your two posts, the one right above this one too. I love music of all types, but never seen much from The Beatles. Chuck Berry can be thanked for the riffs. The Clash were a great band, one of my favorite punk bands, but the Sex Pistols, Iggy and the Stooges, Bad Brains, The Ramones and the MC5 were ahead of The Clash in the punk movement.

The Beatles, to me, influenced boy bands. I don't hear their influence in say, Iron Maiden or Black Sabbath or in rap or in country. They were more a less a band who influenced 2-3 minute pop ditties. They were good at it, no doubt about that, but please remember that these are opinions. Yes, I just corrected your post, but that is because The Beatles didn't influence many forms of rock music and definitely not riffs. You can thank the aforementioned Chuck Berry, the Yardbirds and a few years later, Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix.

Please don't argue, I am only trying to get us to remember that this thread is about opinions, which cannot be wrong.

I'm not meaning to argue, but one of the things that struck me about Soundgarden's Superunknown was the Beatles influence there; could be completely wrong with this, but it's something I've always noticed. Influence is a pretty hard thing to get hold of, of course, but Hendrix used to cover Sgt. Pepper (the title track) in his live shows, and I'm pretty sure that the Floyds were all big fans, Roger Waters has said that if he were to list his favourite X songs of all time (I forget the number), not many would be written by anyone other than Bob Dylan or John Lennon.

Just some fish heads tossed against the ceiling, maybe none of them will stick...and you're right, it's all opinions, personal taste, and that stuff's hard to argue about.

And while I think about it, there are the obvious ones, like the whole Britpop thing, esp Oasis, who never made any bones about their drooling fandom...you can hear it in Jet, if you must listen to them...and it's discernible in Radiohead too.

It's alright, I try to take everything as just a conversation not an argument, and agree Superunknown did have a different sound than the other Soundgarden albums. Though, I never really seen a Beatles influence on Pink Floyd. One Pink Floyd song would be as long as 7 or 8 Beatles songs combined. I know the name Pink Floyd comes from a couple of blues players Pink (somebody) and Floyd Council (I think, not for sure).

The last paragraph, I honestly don't know who Jet is. Oasis, I remember the song, "Wonderwall" and actually thought it was a lost Beatles song. I always thought Radiohead were influenced by Pink Floyd more than anyone, but then again, I only have one album by Radiohead, "Ok Computer". But, on Soundgarden, I thought Superunknown was their letdown album. Badmotorfinger has to be one of the greatest albums of all time, it had a very clear Black Sabbath influence on it. They probably should have released Superunknown first, then Badmotorfinger.

Chris Cornell's solo album has a Beatles feel to it, titled, "Euporia Morning". It is true now, different opinions can co-exist without getting angry, we are improving as a group ^_^ .

Jet is a band from my home town, and it's not something I acknowledge with any pride, they've allegedly torn up significant parts of the universe despite the fact that they are...let's just say they are both very derivative and particularly shameless about it.

And a conversation is a good way to see this whole thing. Superunknown is the Soundgarden album I know best, and I like it a lot, might have to get into the other ones a bit.

The Worst Band Ever title belongs to either ICP or HIM.

Please discuss.
ICP, I don't think they are THE worst, but they are pretty bad. I think one thing that makes them so bad is the way their fans take their music literally. It's similar to the effect Korn has on their fans. I like some of Korn's music, I don't own any of it, but they have had several songs that I thought were really solid songs, but their fans have a negative effect on the way you listen to Korn.

HIM, I found HIM by accident. One of the bands that I liked when I was a little younger, was Joy Division. I was seaching the internet and somehow HIM came up as a new version of Joy Division. The cd I was checking out by HIM was something, "Love songs" or something like that. It's a shame that HIM gets a lot of credit even though people like Nick Cave were doing the same style long before HIM without any credit.

Being from the United States, the whole grunge movement was happening when I was a teenager, Soundgarden were one of my absolute favorite bands of that era because they were not as whiny as the other bands in grunge. The best albums by Soundgarden in my opinion are, Badmotorfinger and Louder Than Love, the last two Superunknown and Down on the Upside are both good albums, but the other two had a little more aggression to them. They also had one before Louder than Love, it is called FOPP/(forgot, think it's something about life) it isn't that good or essential, it was a combination of two EPs that they recorded when they first formed.

Chris Cornell's "Euphoria Morning" you would probably love it if you like Superunknown. There is also the, "Temple of the Dog" project that members of Soundgardern were a part of. It has what I think is Cornell's best vocal performance, called, "Say Hello to Heaven" the Temple of the Dog cd also has a song with Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam singing, with Cornell providing backup vocals, called, "Hunger Strike" it was a popular song here in the States. This cd was dedicated to Andrew Love of Mother Love Bone who had died before the cd came out.

A few others that were left out of the popular phase of that era that are good, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees and Tad.
