I ran across this;
http://www.youtube.com/watch.php?v=cwCE3dF1Ts0

A windows Vista presentation. Sort of

For those not in the know, this video shows all the new interesting features Microsoft has implemented in the new Windows version, and how all these have been used for a few years in Mac OS

Yes, yes. Microcrap has done it again! Many parts of their GUI mimic those of the Mac OSes of late. They are trying to make their OS like UNIX and Linux (command line, WinFS, ec.).

I know. Honestly, Microsoft should stick to their own unimaginative OS, and let the creative people be creative. Grrr. Thieves.

Yeah, the original Windows GUI was literally a rip of Apple's (long time ago). Gates deceived Steve Jobs and ended up getting the Apple GUI!

I always love hearing this story, you should check out Xerox's contribution to the PC world before you give Jobs too much credit. Maybe if Steve wasn't so full of himself and didn't over-price his machines, he would have won back when it counted.

I hope no one actually fell for that video being real.

Apple legally bought the GUI from Xerox. Microsoft did not buy rights to copy or use the Apple GUI.

Bill is not stupid, he is a lot smarter than all of us put together. He is just taking what works and putting it into one package. There is a reason he is the richest man in the world.

I believe Ballmer is to blame more than Gates. Though Gates DID steal code from Apple´s OS and created his own GUI from that stolen code. Apple, as stated, bought their rights legally from Xerox. MS has stolen, is stealing and will steal. They have many good products, yes. Like the Office suite, and I rather like Exchange. AD is also good, if you have a Windows network.
But let´s face the facts; Their OS is a heap of stolen code, it is built on an inferior text based console and is not REALLY good for anything but gaming. For which it is superior - for now...
One can only wait and see the development of things now that Apple has made the switch awaited and rumored from their System 7 days.

That's not really accurate, both Apple and Microsoft, among many others, were working on GUI's before Apple got involved with Xerox. Don't get me wrong, I use Macs, Windows and Linux nearly every single day. They all have good and bad points, (though Apple has a lot more good points since OSX.) Just because Apple may have paid Xerox (and your source, a biased one at that, is the only place I've ever seen that says Apple paid for Xerox's GUI developements) has little to do with who stole ideas or not. Everyone working on GUI's had icons and a mouse, we don't blame Ford for putting four wheels on a car just because Mercedes did it first. Fact is, in a critical phase of PC developement, Apple overpriced their products and locked everyone out with their proprietary architecture while Microsoft, IBM and Compaq developed things everyone could use and anyone could build at a more reasonable cost. IBM may have come up with the idea for a BIOS, and it was a good one, so a couple of other groups reverse engineered it and used the idea of a BIOS, there's nothing wrong with using a good idea and modifying it to be even better. That doesn't make it stolen.

You won't find that information on the website of any Windows worshipper. Ever read any books on how Bill Gates got his success?

This is why Microsoft won over Apple. :) Microsoft allowed other people to develop software for their OS -- Apple did not.

How about this... Microsoft thought TCP/IP was useless, but they ended up using it -- BASED ON OR AN EXACT COPY OF THE BSD TCP/IP STACK. They also thought the WWW was useless, but now Microsoft claims to have pioneered HTTP, WWW, and HTML. :scratch: Then there's .NET, a nice rip of J2SE and J2EE.

The Apple GUI being stolen by Microsoft is not a legal issue. It's a problem with basic ethics. Apple agreed to let Microsoft use their GUI in order to make improvements, which Gates did, but he broke away from Apple. Apple complained, but they lost the lawsuit.

True enough, but Microsoft is far from the only player that "steals" ideas, it's rampant in the computer world. People have voted using the best method we have, with their dollars and Microsoft has been in the lead for a long time. At the end of the day, I'm glad we have a few choices.
