  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Has any one any idea how to minimize /restore down a pdf document in windows 8 so I can read it while looking at other applications on my screen.

The pdf takes up the whole screen and the usual minimize /restore/close icons at the top cannot be found.

No problem with word though.

I have had so much problems with windows 8. I wonder if it was worthwhile updating from XP. What are your views?

My oldest son uses Win8 on a new Lenovo~I get to it once or twice a month but it working ok~~he also jumped from XP to 8.

He works from the "classic" desktop screen, not sure why a PDF wouldn't act the same there as XP or 7..? I know he uses PDFs for school stuff.

The pdf viewer Windows 8 comes with is part of the mobile interface. You can simply get Adobe Reader and set your pdf to open using that instead of the default mobile app.

In order to switch between apps in mobile apps, drag your mouse to the top left side of the screen. It will open a little side bar which is used to navigate between open mobile apps and desktop.

I personally love Win8. It does have a bit of a learning curve coming from the previous OS's but many questions can be answered about using it simply by using the tutorial MS provides at the start of the OS when you log into it the first time. Learn how to get around your PC - Microsoft Windows also has these tutorials in video form.

Unless you have some specialised use for machine then a good upgrade path would be to install something like Linux Mint and divorce yourself from a corporate that thinks it's customers are worthless.

Like being able to use applications without having to find an "equivalent" that isn't nearly as good? :)

LOL

Or, finding an MS application that uses open standards so that you can actually communicate with users of other operating systems. The obvious choice here is the MS Office formats which are a closed shop whereas Libre/OpenOffice use open standards.

Ironic though that Libre/OpenOffice can open MS document formats that MS Office can't/won't open.

I guess we can both come up with plenty of examples to enforce our arguments but I'm seeing more and more people switching to Linux and Open Source solution as they work for the given problem, cost little to implement and don't require a lot of retraining. I know that in your area of sound recording, Open Source is behind the game but bear in mind that Gnu/Linux was basically born for use in the server room and has evolved into what it is today. Windows was born for the desktop and, if it doesn't alter it's game fast, it will be it's final resting place.

Windows 8 Tech Advice from a tech: Do not use Windows 8.

Yep, my daughters Win8 laptop got its first BSOD a few days ago,

DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION

Went online to find info and MS article said look at associated info when it blue screens....

Absolutely no info!

Left it running, rebooting and doing its stuff and it came right after about 6 hours. Still don't know what really caused it to hiccup but wouldn't be surprised if it does it again - the laptop hardware is fine as I've done tests on all key components

I use to be a big Open Office advocate till about 5 years ago when I jumped back to MS Office because it was smoother and just ran nicer. Now I'm on Office 365 and I absolutely love it. The apps work flawlessly, are very lightweight compared to previous versions, have instant access to Skydrive and now work on my Android phone as well. :)
