what ever happened to winamp 4...

On the site they say the new Winamp is so good they skipped a number. Last thing I read when the beta version was released is that, because it's a combination of Winamp 2 and Winamp 3, they added those version release numbers together to get 5.

BTW--version 5.01 is out. I don't know what was updated, but it seems awful quick.

After messing around with WA5, I've been fairly impressed. It likes to use a good amount of memory if you use the modern skin. but memory really isn't a huge issue with me. One feature that I've really liked was the internet tv. I dunno if it was a feature in WA3 since I never used it. Nice idea to watch whatever some random people want to stream over the internet. Worth the download for sure if you have the memory in your computer to run it.

Winamp 5.01 changelog...

* fixed gen_ml selection bug
* added gen_ml option for no guessing at all
* made AVS and SPS support loop() in user code
* made AVS support megabuf() in user code
* made pro installer not prompt for regkey if already valid
* improved font directory retrieval in gen_ff
* added content rating system in Internet TV's listing
* added bandwidth usage statistic in Internet Radio/TV listings
* made media library guess from filename only when NO metadata found
* added seperate recent items tracking options for files/streams
* made installer better handle installing wa5 directly over wa3.
* added milkdrop docs to installer
* made uninstaller not remove winamp directory if not empty (user is
now required to do so manually to avoid people going "oops")
* made installer check sonic px.dll versions and prompt for reboot
accordingly
* fixed nsv metadata querying bugs
* fixed gen_ml guessing bugs for files with metadata that are not in DB

I downloaded Winamp 3 (several times) a long time ago (install/uninstall/install etc etc), however it kept crashing my computer or locking it up or would work once then next time I used the computer it wouldn't work or came up with an error saying that part of it was missing or had a corrupted file or something. So I gave it away as a bad joke. WMP9 or Real One is much more reliable and much more user-friendly. This is the first time I have ever heard anyone say that Winamp actually works, I don't know anyone who uses it. Maybe I don't know enough people. Anyway good luck to you, but I won't be downloading Winamp 5 any time soon, my computer is ticking over quite nicely thanks.
I just had to look at this thread though after all the trouble I had with Winamp3, I didn't realise that Winamp was still around.
Bless Ya :) <><

Col - most people would agree that WinAMP 3 was a Bad Thing. The only good thing was the great skins you could get.

WinAMP 5 is basically WinAMP 2 (the good version) with extra features, including the ability to use WinAMP 3 skins. It's nothing like 3 in that respect - it works, and I've never had it crash on me. It's very good, I'll never use WMP or RealOne again for general use (still have to use it for WMP9 streams and RA).

OK, I'll show my ignorance in the hopes that maybe someone can show me what I'm missing. In the Winamp 5 Media Library how do you see what songs you have? I see Artists and Albums, but I don't see how I'm supposed to pick (play or add to playlist) a particular song. I tried Media Library Preferences to see if there was an option to add a "Title" to the column headings, also tried right clicking the column headings, and double clicking seems to add the whole album to the playlist. I'm probably missing something obvious.

Yes WA3 sux hardcore, especially now comparing it to WA5. I used WA3 for 2 seconds and then went back to WA2.xx as fast as I could.

Now that Real is suing M$ for some lamearse reason, linky , you can download the codec for realmedia and play it in the media player of your choice, although I can't get RM to work in WA5. linky

Enjoy :D

When you have the Media Library open you need to go to File -> Add Media to Library... Check out the link to a screenshot. I don't have enough posts to post an image so this will have to do.

Thanks beardly for the reply, but that clicking on Add Media to Library only went through and scanned my files again...no difference...still shows many albums and artists, but no titles. Maybe I'm in a MusicMatch mindset (what I used to use). In MM you'd click on a + sign and it would drop down the titles (tracks) beneath the artist. The closest I can come is to do a search and then it shows me what Album and Artist has that title, but I can't see a list of titles/tracks for a given artist. I have this terrible fear that I'm missing something obvious and wasting everyone's time (in which case I'll have to crawl in a hole and hide).

See the below screenshot.

In the media library, select "Local Media" on the left menu, and you should get a bunch of columns on the right. Right clicking on the column headings, and choosing "customize columns", will let you choose what information is shown (Artist, title, album, length etc.)

Thanks Keithylishus. I was in Audio (a sub-heading of Local Media). I'm not sure why, but in Audio you get fewer columns, AND right clicking does not present an option to customize columns. As soon as I clicked on Local Media, I was back in Kansas again!

Well, it wasn't exactly obvious so I guess I don't have to crawl in a hole and hide, but I don't think I get any points for perspicacity.

Thanks again and Merry Christmas!

hmm. I don't see why you all love this program so much. I just insatlled it about an hour ago. literally within a minute it had
-stolen all the file type associations for movies and audio from the other programs without even asking me
-messed around with some existing windows media player playlists
-messed around with the settings on my soundcard
-completely crashed my system.

not impressed.
