I only watched one episode of spongebob after it was recommended to me by a friend. It was an episode about cussing and they were bleeping words. I didn't find it amusing and found the humor a bit crude for children.

Nope, no spongebob here. However I don't go around smuggly announcing that we are spongebob free. Truth be told, I only think about that show when it comes up here because I very rarely hear parents talk about it anymore.

HeyHomie, it's safe to generalize and say that parents generally are more alert to the little offensive things in TV shows and movies that childfree adults would overlook. I think that's perfectly acceptable and normal considering you aren't around them 24/7 and therefore don't spend huge amounts of time considering how their values and actions will be affected by what they watch. I would hope that you grant the next "alert" parent that you meet some compassion..now that you have gotten in their minds a bit. Blessings.

I think SpongeBob is funny, me and my Hubby watch it all the time and if it's still on when Emily gets interested in TV then she can watch it too if she wants. I wouldn't be to fond of her watching the episode about "fancy talk" (cursing) but other than that I think they're perfectly fine to watch.

I have seen the one where he can't tie his shoes, I must have missed the flashback to baby sponge. I don't know if my 12 year would really get that though. It's just a baby sponge living where ever a baby sponge lives. Maybe I need to see it first. The episode about cursing I liked as much as I could seeing it's Sponge Bob. He is cursing to be cool, but all the adults are very dissappointed in him and get very upset. I even used that one on my 12yr old. I know alot of kids at school do it and every now and then she lets one slip. So we did discuss the episode when it was over.

Some childed friends of mine were over last weekend and, while we adults were looking at photo albums, the kids started jonesing for something to do. I suggested putting in one of my SpongeBob Squarepants DVD's. And my friends were all like, [smug, serious voice]"We don't allow Spongebob in our home."[/smug, serious voice]

Can somebody please give me some kind of a clue about what parents would find objectionable about SpongeBob! It's SPONGEBOB! for Pete's sake! I've watched it for years and have never seen any kind of objectionable content. My friends are both college graduates and, one would think, have critical thinking skills and have sorted through this whole "SpongeBob is gay" hysteria that was going around a couple of years ago.

Any help here?

Yeah, some conservative groups claim that Spongebob is gay and the show promotes the homosexual agenda. Don't believe me, read it and weep. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6850119/

It's funny, before the 'controversy' I never used to watch it but now I do to try and see evidence of this gay agenda thing, but I haven't to date.

i think it's really sad when adults have nothing better to do than to turn a child's cartoon into something sinful and bad...it's a children's show, people should leave it at that and stop trying to turn it into something it's not.

We have no problem with SpongeBob. At first I thought he was annoying but my kids and hubby like him so I'm ok with it. I've seen far worse stuff out there. SpongeBob is way down on my list of things to worry about.

As a side note, my entire family keeps telling me that I am just like Squidward. :sigh:

It's a parent's responsibility (that's us "adults") to scrutinize and approve what our children watch. Not all children's shows are good. In fact, most are crap.

The fact that you most likely watch SB would indicate that it's not merely a "children's show".

I watch just about every children's cartoon there is to watch on Nickelodeon, including things like Dora, it's better than watching those stupid day time soaps...I have yet to see anything on SpongeBob that's inappropriate

Not to get into a big ole debate here, but I've watched Blues Clues for years. Even before I had kids. Just because a show is geared towards kids, doesn't mean an adult can't enjoy it.

The whole "gay" thing came about after an episode aired showing SpongeBob and Patrick playing mommy and daddy to an orphaned clam that they found on the doorstep.

I saw that episode. I think some one else mentioned earlier about how it was more like kids playing house. I mean, my kids do the same thing where my daughter is the mommy and my son the daddy and they'll have one of her dolls and usually his Batman (don't ask) as their kids but my kids are in no way, shape, form or fashion incestuous because they play house together. Some people really need to find a hobby.

Well, if name calling and cussing (even though it's "bleeped out") is ok to you and part of your vocabulary, then I suppose SB is not inappropriate.

Maybe so, but it still doesn't take away the fact that each parent has to ok it for their kids, and just because it's geared for kids does not automatically mean it's "good".

My 6 yo son enjoys lots of shows, Arthur, Timothy Goes to School, Atomic Betty, Totally Spies, Scooby Doo, etc., but some episodes are still questionable. Thus while I won't necessarily prohibit a particular show, I will scrutinize a particular episode - that means he rarely watches TV by himself. Which is a long way of saying parents have to be vigilant and not allow the TV to be a babsitter.

now you're just being ignorant and assuming that whatever i watch on tv is what i do in real life...goodness. so i guess the lesson of the show, that cursing is not appropriate, doesnt mean anything at all.
Now you're name calling.......which is ironic as you obviously didn't get the lesson of the show....
