I think we must also remember it depends on the kid. Some kids are more affected by things than others.

Exactly, a lot of factors influence how a child takes in what they see, in the world and on tv. At different ages some kids react differently also. My youngest daughter has had to firmest grip I've ever seen on reality from a VERY young age. She knew what could happen in real life, she knew that just because she saw it on tv (even with "real" people) it didn't mean that it was okay to act like that are that people REALLY did the things she saw.

My oldest daughter.. forget it, anything bad happening even in cartoon, digitally rendered, or claymation was REAL and it could happen to her. She didn't get to se a lot of tv when she was young.. it totally influenced her.

Having only really read the OP, could it be something as simple as sheer elitism? My dad objects to almost all modern cartoons simply because they aren't the beautiful, old black and white Micky Mouse.

:) Could be, but I like a lot of new cartoons, I think the voices annoy me. (not the ones in my head :p , the ones in the spongebob cartoons)

(I personally believe most people making up some of these cartoons are having a very enjoyable trip on very illegal substances when they come up with the ideas for them...)

Actually, in the case of Sponge Bob, he's a pretty normal guy. (he's a family memeber of a family member;) ) He was a.....hmm. can't remember what it's called. He worked as a sea scientist person? Just some fun info.:D

I know a family who doesn't even own a TV because they think it's a terrible influence and they don't want their kids to pick up bad language etc.
Truth be told, their kids are the most disrespectful little...terrors I've ever met in my life, and that's saying something because I babysit quite a few kids.

Oh gosh, how true this is!!

Sounds like my SIL's situation to a "T"

I dislike spongebob, his voice is very annoying. The bathroom humor gets old really quick and his need to make fun of everyone doesn't set the best example. I have not ban the show first of all because he(my nephew) is allowed to have it at home and I'd much rather save it for just about everything on the cartoon network.
Bathroom humor and general foolishness keeps SpongeBob out of our DVD collection (my hubby would love to see Sponge Bob dipped in bleach :D ), and we don't have cable or TV hook up- so we are spared the plethora of the latest mindless cartoon fads. lol. :p

I do let them watch certain shows their Grandma tapes for them and sends. Teen Titans comes to mind... I like Avatar myself.

We watch the oldies on DVD, the kids love the old Scooby Doo stuff, Popeye, Little Lulu, Tom and Jerry, etc.
