Sheesh. What's interesting is that early on only the Irish Catholics had this custom and it was the Protestants that used the term "father" most for clergy (just read Moby Dick ). Then, when the Irish immigrants came to America, the xenophobes wanted to distance themeselves from anything that could be considered romish priestcraft, so they began to adopt the literal view of that verse in Matthew.

it actuallty makes me laugh

Did you say that?

Seems to me your words are very clear.
Where it says in the Bible to call no man father..... let's look at this.

Mat 23:9 And call no [man] your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

That was Jesus talking to the disciples about the religious leaders that wanted special honor and respect. . Seems applicable to me

A member of the Holy Trinity, is called "father".
We call our male parent, our "father".

When Jesus said to call no man father, do you honestly think he was referring to the exact word of "father"???

OF COURSE NOT!!!!

That sounds like a personal application of scripture to me.
He was referring to the commandment of "do not put any Gods before me"

Really? could you show that to me in the context?

Mat 23:1 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,

Mat 23:2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:

Mat 23:3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, [that] observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.

Mat 23:4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay [them] on men's shoulders; but they [themselves] will not move them with one of their fingers.

Mat 23:5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,

Mat 23:6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

Mat 23:7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

Mat 23:8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, [even] Christ; and all ye are brethren.

Mat 23:9 And call no [man] your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

Mat 23:10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, [even] Christ.

Mat 23:11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

Mat 23:12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

Now I know God said this about FALSE GODS

Exd 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness [of any thing] that [is] in heaven above, or that [is] in the earth beneath, or that [is] in the water under the earth:

Exd 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God [am] a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth [generation] of them that hate me;

By not calling anyone else Father, he means not to call anyone else God.

Then why did he not say that ?

Do you honestly think God would send anyone to hell for calling a priest father???

I believe people go to hell because they have not come to Christ as their Savior , not because of a sin.

Christ came for sinners not the righteous.

When I said that "that makes me laugh", I was referring to ppl taking the scripture literally. Sorry I did not specify for you.

Secondly, you are taking the passage of calling no man "father" literally. So y don't u answer my question and tell me why you've choosen to take that passage literally, as opposed to others? For instance, the passage that says to burn gays in a firey pitt??

Thirdly, you asked you Jesus didn't want anyone to call anyone else God then y didn't he just say that..
well, once again, "father" refers to a person of the Trinity. He could have easily said "God", but because we refer to the head of the Trinity as "Father" he used the word Father. Secondly, as I stated, these words were NOT the EXACT words of Jesus. If we were to take all things in the Bible as the EXACT words of Jesus that you would find MANY contraditions. The words in the Bible are an account by the writers of God's Word.

You mean like people that do not understand the metaphor of "this is my body ".

Do you want to quote me that passage chapter and verse?

Can you tell me why you would not take this literally when you obviously take other words of scripture literally?

Thirdly, you asked you Jesus didn't want anyone to call anyone else God then y didn't he just say that..
well, once again, "father" refers to a person of the Trinity.

Actually he said YOU HAVE A FATHER IN HEAVEN that is a little more concrete than a vague reference to the trinity.
He could have easily said "God", but because we refer to the head of the Trinity as "Father" he used the word Father.

Have you considered that IF he was talking about idoltery he could have said "call no man god"?
Secondly, as I stated, these words were NOT the EXACT words of Jesus.

And you know this how? Do you think the words of John 6 were his "exact words" .
If we were to take all things in the Bible as the EXACT words of Jesus that you would find MANY contraditions.

Protestants have been trying to make that point about such things as "keys of the kingdom, the lords supper, and "who's sins you forgive..." and of course "this is my body"
So I understand your frustration !
The words in the Bible are an account by the writers of God's Word.

So it is not the inspired word of God?

Where do you draw that line?
